According to an early collector's note, the present letter was written to his friend Ernst Weyden, a scholar and member of the Faculty at the University of Cologne. Liszt discusses his planned marriage to Carolyne Sayn-Wittgenstein, Richard Wagner, and a planned collaboration with Weyden: "Je suis très sensible à vos bons souhaits pour mon quarantième anniversaire, lesquels se résument pour moi tous dans un seul : c'est que la femme qui s'est absolument dévouée à moi qu'elle est devenue à la fois et la racine et la fleur de ma vie, me soit conservé. Grâces au Ciel j'ai tout lieu d'espérer que ce voeu suprême de mon coeur sera exaucé, - et d'après les nouvelles que j'ai trouvé ici il est très probable que dans peu de mois mon mariage aura lieu [...]" ("I am very sensitive to your good wishes for my 40th birthday, which can be summarized for me in one thing: that the woman who has been absolutely devoted to me and who has become both the root and the flower of my life, be kept for me. Thanks be to Heaven that I have every reason to hope that this supreme wish of my heart will be granted - and from the news I have found here it is very likely that in a few months my marriage will take place [...]" (transl.). - Liszt is grateful to Weyden for having reported on his brochure on Lohengrin and Tannhäuser in the Kölnische Zeitung. "It is to be presumed that my brochure will contribute to spreading the understanding of Wagner's works, which, in order to be greatly admired, only need to be understood from a higher point of view than one is accustomed to judge ordinary operas. You have thus done art a service, as well as me, by contributing your share to the propagation of these two eminent works of which Germany will be able one day to be proud [...]". Liszt treasures his memories of their architectural trip and hopes that they will one day resume their peregrinations: "In the meantime, please do not forget our collaboration project in honour of the Duomo; I hope that you will be able to send me the stanzas I have requested before the end of the year [...]. - On blue paper. Bis spätestens Donnerstag sind wir in Schneeberg. Wir werden uns freuen, Euch alle wohl und zu Hause zu treffen. Es ist ein langer Wunsch von mir, Dich einmal aufzusuchen. Interesting set addressed to the American commander of Garmisch, after the defeat of Germany. Major Herbert L. Snapp (1901-91) was the officer of the American occupation troops, appointed "Stadtcommandant" of Garmisch, where Strauss resided. - 1) Garmisch, 8 May 1945. On the very day of the armistice and the end of the war, Strauss greets Commander Snapp as the representative of the great American people ("als hiesiger Repräsentantendes grossen amerikanischen Volkes") on this day of peace ("zu dem heutigen Friedenstage") and warmly expresses the wish that America, friend to the arts, as it has delivered Germany from an undignified slavery, will in a beautiful future extend its protection to the descendants of Goethe and Wagner for the reconstruction of the country and its culture. - 2) Garmisch, 12 May 1945. Strauss asks for driving licenses and, for his son, daughter-in-law and grandson Richard, hunting licenses, so that his family can feed itself. - On a mimeographed concert programme, given by the students of the Music Department of St. Mary of the Springs on 12 April 1945, Richard Strauss inscribed a 3-bar quote from the beginning of the Rosenkavalier, with the inscription and signature. - Attached is an autograph letter from "Daddy" (i. e. Snapp) to his daughter Nancy, sending her, with comments, these documents, and a letter draft to Strauss in which the American military government makes three reassurances, "all of which will be in direct contrast to the period 1933-45" (written on the reverse of a stationery with printed letterhead of the Reichsministerium des Innern).

4to. 2 pages. Curious letter about Strauss's attitude under Nazism. The letter shows Strauss's activity to create the STAGMA (Staatlich genehmigte Gesellschaft zur Verwertung musikalischer Aufführungsrechte) to replace the GEMA (Genossenschaft zur Verwertung musikalischer Aufführungsrechte), a governmental institution for the management of musicians' copyrights, and his attempt to compose the board of directors of the new society in such a way as to satisfy the Nazi leaders, who should not be part of it, while he himself wanted to be its president. Dr. Schmidt-Leonhardt must prepare the minister for Strauss's position. The early foundation is a chance for them, and if Dr. Goebbels confirms to give Strauss full powers according to the "Führer principle", Strauss will immediately determine autocratically (after liquidation of the last GEMA General Assembly) the board and the statutes of the Stagma: "Inhalt beiliegenden nicht abgesandten Briefes können Sie vielleicht vertraulich für Herrn Dr. Schmidt[-]Leonhar[d]t benützen, damit er in meinem Sinne den Herrn Minister schon präparieren kann. Wenn ich recht überlege, ist die voreilige Gründung für uns ein Glück u. wenn Dr. Goebbels Stand hält u. mir alle Vollmachten 'laut Führerprinzip' bestätigt, bestimme ich (nachdem die letzte Gemageneralversammlung liquidiert hat) nun Vorstand u. Statuten der Stagma selbstherrlich. Ich habe Kopsch telegrafisch nach Berlin beordert u. mir seine neuen fertigen Statuten nach hieher erbeten, damit ich Samstag ganz im Bilde bin. Bitte versichern Sie sich noch des Herrn Havemann, damit uns nicht von der Partei (etwa Herr Hinkel oder sonst wer) in den Rücken fällt u. dann will ich versuchen, Herrn Keudell ganz auszuschalten, den Vorstand u. die Geschäftsführung der Stagma neu zu ernennen. Vorher waren es doch drei bei der Gema: Ritter, Schmeling, Lehar? Je vous en fais toutes mes excuses et vous prie de croire qu'elles sont sincères. Le bébé va mieux ce matin, le Docteur Roger trouve la fièvre très diminuée et espère que le petit catharre ne poussera pas plus. Je vous remercie encore de la bonne grâce parfaite avec laquelle vous nous êtes mis à la disposition de mon enfant et de son père [...]". - After referring to Pierre's offer of one stall for mass the next day, he offers his own two stalls to make up for their missed encounter and promises to be at home if he comes by the next day: "Pierre vous avait promis une stalle pour demain. Folio. Italian manuscript in brown and pink ink on paper. (50) pp. on 30 ff. With calligraphed title and 7 hand-drawn illustrations, comprising a dedication portrait of Marie Louise, Duchess of Parma, her coat of arms on the title-page, 4 scenic designs for the play, and a final vignette with motto. Contemporary giltstamped full calf with pink endpapers. All edges gilt. Beautiful dedication manuscript of Giuseppe dall'Argine's romantic drama that was set to music by count Germano Liberati Tagliaferri (1795-1870) and premiered in 1821 at the Teatro Sanvitale in Parma. Dall'Argine dedicated his play to the ruling Duchess of Parma and second wife of Napoleon, archduchess Marie Louise (1791-1847), who is represented in a fine pen drawing that serves as frontispiece. All illustrations are signed by the author. - This manuscript is probably the only surviving copy of dall'Argine's play. Himself largely forgotten, Giuseppe dall'Argine stems from a leading family of musicians and librettists in Parma, the most prominent members of which were the tenor Luigi dall'Argine (1808-69) and his son Costantino (1842-77), a highly successful composer in his time. Giuseppe dall'Argine is known as the author of another libretto, the comedy "Castello di Valbruno" that was published in Parma in 1825 and again set to music by Germano Liberati Tagliaferri. - Well preserved.

With many thanks I remain [...]". - Abel, in collaboration with Sir James Dewar, invented cordite (1889), which was adopted as the standard explosive of the British Army. He also carried out studies relating to dust explosions in coal mines and in the process developed a device for testing the flashpoint of petroleum. Abel also found a way to prevent the spontaneous explosion of gun cotton. From 1854 to 1888 he served as Ordnance Chemist at the Chemical Establishment of the Royal Arsenal, where he established himself as the leading British authority on explosives. - On stationery with blindstamped arms. Baron Directeur, général du Mont. de piété, qui s'intéresse au pétitionaire. J'ai eu dernièrement occasion de voir M. Marrand. Sa Situation m'a touché. Large 8vo. (4) pp. 5 handwritten lines. Original cardboard wrappers. Interesting inscription to the painter James William Frater (1887-1969), who is addressed as the "corrector of Heraclitus' Bridge", one of Magritte’s paintings on view at the exhibition: "A James Frater (ou, plutôt à Jim) le correcteur du Pont d'Heréclite, l’allègre chiffoneur des papiers bruns, le nouveau Jéovah qui fait un homme rapide du carton immobile". The booklet entitled "Bulletin Internationale Kunst", no. 9, of the Esher Surrey Art Galleries, had been printed for a Magritte exhibition in The Hague (14 November to 5 December 1936). Frater was a student of Jan Toorop and collaborated with Mondrian and Escher. Apparently he had contributed in some form to the painting mentioned in the inscription. The assembled signatures of the writers Paul Colinet (1898-1957), Jean Émile Louis Scutenaire (1905-87), his wife Irène Hamoir (1906-94), and the painter Magritte (1898-1967) bear beautiful testimony to the early years of the Belgian Surrealist movement. - The four-page booklet contains a portrait of Magritte, a short text on the artist, a list of 26 works on display, and two reproductions of paintings on display. Several addenda, including a page of the "Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant", 25 November 1936, with a review of the exhibition entitled "Plastische Kunsten, Rene Magritte, Kunstzaal Esher Surrey". - Booklet shows some browning to the upper margins and a rust stain from the staple.

It is thus most likely that the preparations for the exhibition announced in the letter took longer. A less likely scenario is that letter was written to confirm participation in a modern art exhibition at the Leger Gallery in London, also held in 1937. The business partner mentioned in the letter as "Metthey" cannot be identified with certainty: de Vlaminck might be referring to the art historian and critic Jacques Mathey. - Traces of folds. Barras, Paul, French politician (1755-1829).

Folio. 3½ pp. on bifolium. Historically significant letter written to defend himself against charges of espionage for the exiled Bourbons and their British allies. The letter was probably addressed to the military commission that had been installed in 1813 to try lieutenant Joseph Charabot, a central figure of the plot. Barras complains of having to defend himself against "allegations as disgusting as calumnious" made by a man who tries "disgracefully to ransom his life" by "spilling his own crimes" onto other people: "il m'est bien pénible Messieurs d'être obligé de me justifier d'imputations aussi degoûtantes que calumnieuses, d'un homme qui pour racheter honteusement sa vie, cherche à déverser ses propres délits sur des personnes qui comme moi ne l'ont jamais connu : je veux parle de Mr. Charabot fils". Barras admits that Charabot had visited him once or twice several years ago, but he underlines that there was no private contact and no exchange of money between them. The letter continues with short descriptions of Barras's relations to several of the accused. General Maximin-Joseph Emmanuel Guidal (1764-1812), who had been arrested on 22 January 1812, was the most important conspirator. During Malet's coup, Guidal was briefly released from prison on 23 October 1812. After the coup was quashed, Guidal was executed along 23 co-conspirators. - The affair of Marseille is little researched, and it is not known whether Paul Barras was an active participant in the conspiracy or not. The arrogant tone of this letter certainly would have done little to help his case, and it might have been merely his role in the ascent of Napoleon Bonaparte that saved his life, apart from an apparent lack of evidence. While Joseph Charabot was executed, Napoleon exiled Barras to Rome, from where he returned in the wake of the Bourbon Restoration. - Some browning and very slight foxing.

To the banker and courtier Horatio Rucellai (ca. 1530-1605), expressing her wish that he return to Paris as quickly as possible and pleading him "not to believe a thing of what has been told" to him, should he have "heard that his assignations of the debt of Lyon have been altered", underlining that the King has no intention of changing anything: "Je vous prie vous en venir le plustost et dilligemmens q[ue] vous pourriez. Et pour ce q[ue] vous pourriez avoir entendu que l’on ayt changé quelque chose en vos assignations sur la creance de Lyon Je vous prie n’en croire rien de tout ce q[ue] l’on vous en dira car il n’en est rien comme vous congnoistrez quant vous serez arrivé car vous trouverez toutes choses en leur entier pour vre regard, et le Roy monsieur mon filz en bonne disposition de ny rien changer [...]”. - Horatio Rucellai was of Florentine origin but had left the city in conflict with the ruling Medicis. In Lyon he established a successful bank and provided a financial lifeline to the crown during the First French War of Religion in 1562/63, though Catherine de' Medici was forced to pledge parts of the crown jewels to him. Rucellai's apparent claim on liabilities of the city of Lyon is certainly connected to his role as creditor of the French crown. In 1581, Rucellai leased the salt tax (gabelle) and achieved a reduction in order to minimize fraud. From 1587, Rucellai served in the court of Ferdinando I de' Medici. As a former courtier of Catherine's, Rucellai was charged with the negotiations for Ferdinando's marriage with Catherine's favourite granddaughter Christina of Lorraine, achieved in 1589. - Counter-signed by "Chantereau". Coiffier, titular advisor of the Imperial University in Napoleonic France, with thanks for a letter from Mainz, discussing the French reorganisation of the Italian school system after the creation of new (often ephemeral) academies, about school budgets, recommending the lowering of taxes for the "Pères des Ecoles Pies", mentioning several names of schools such as the "College Cortone", "College Modegliana", "College de Sienne", "College de Florence" and its director Father del Ricco, the academy of Pisa and its director Sproni, as well as the municipal colleges of Arezzo, and further discussing "Luoghi di Monte" (public debt securities): "Cette considération que j'avais crû pouvoir faire valoir dans cette circonstance ne sera par perdue, et ne mangera par d'être appréciée en d'autres occasions par la Sagesse de S. E. Le Grand Maitre, et du Conseil de l'Université, et surtout pour tacher de diminuer encore La charge des Taxes universitaire, charge qui est très choquante pour les habitudes de ce pays-ci [...]". - "Les difficultés militaires de Napoléon, à partir de 1812-1813, empêchent cependant, le plus souvent, une réelle mise en place de l’institution académique et les recteurs de ces ressorts géographiques sont soumis à des tensions extrêmes" (Jean-François Condette, "'Traitres fatigués' ou élites administratives?", Histoire de l’éducation, 97 [2003], p. 41). Neri Corsini also succeeded in negotiations on behalf of the Accademia della Crusca which took place in Paris between 1812 and 1814 and led to the rescue of the Riccardiana Library. The collection had been auctioned and sold in 1813, was acquired by the municipality of Florence "especially for the use of the Accademia della Crusca", and finally ceded to the Tuscan state two years later. - With traces of old mounting, ink slightly bleeding to versos in some places.

M. la Reine Elisabeth", one leaf with hand-written notes, some rust stains from an old paper clip, some slight marginal defects. To Elisabeth of Romania (1894-1956) in Cannes, requesting financial assistance because Duverger has been ruined by the fraud committed by an employee in his own wine and liquor business. To save his mother's house, where he and his two little daughters live, he would have to raise the sum of 6 million francs: "Nous sommes avec mes fillettes a la veille d'être a la rue. Nous avons été une famille très honorablement connue dans la région, et ce coup est pour nous tragique [...]".

Tage Bolander at the "Time & Life Building" in New York about the project of publishing the memoirs of the former Queen Elisabeth of Greece and Princess of Romania, with thanks for the recipient's interest and efforts: "J'ai bien reçu en son temps votre lettre du 24 Janvier 1956 ainsi que le carnet manuscrit des 'Mémoires" de Sa Majesté [...]". - Elisabeth of Romania (1894-1956) settled in Cannes some years after her expulsion from Romania in 1947 when the Romanian People's Republic was proclaimed. In France she met the much younger aspiring artist Marc Favrat, who became her lover and whom she made her equerry and adopted in the year of her death. - With blindstamped letterhead and address stamp "Le Chef de la Maison Civile en France".

May I express to you my very sincere condolences on the death of one so dear to you [...]". - Elisabeth of Romania (1894-1956) settled in Cannes some years after her expulsion from Romania in 1947, when the Romanian People's Republic was proclaimed. A document relating to the indictment against Desiderio Rossini, who stole jewellery belonging to Princess Elisabeth of Romania, former Queen of Greece, from her Villa Rosalba in Cannes on 10 January 1956. Marquis Marc de Favrat has requested indemnity payments, and the investigating judge Henry orders two pearl necklaces kept under seal by the police returned to Favrat: "Attendu que le maintien sans scellé de ces pièces à conviction n'est pas indispensable à la manifestation de la vérité, qu'il échet d'en ordonner la restitution au profit de leur propriétaire [...]". - Elisabeth settled in Cannes some years after her expulsion from Romania in 1947 when the Romanian People's Republic was proclaimed. In France, she met the much younger Favrat who became her lover and whom she made her equerry and adopted son in the year of her death. - Some autograph annotations; letterhead "Tribunal de première instance de Grasse", stamped. To Elisabeth of Romania (1894-1956), former Queen of Greece, with a friendly offer of Karmitz' personal savings of 20,000 francs to ease the Princess's financial worries, as she was alarmed at seeing Elisabeth's disquiet the other day: "Malheureusement elles ne s'élèvent qu'à 20.000 frc. mais j'espère que vous n'y verrez qu'une geste de vraie amitié et une preuve de la profonde affection que je vous porte [...]".

To Marquis Marc de Favrat in Cannes, concerning the succession of Princess Elisabeth of Romania, former Queen of Greece, with a request to contact Morgan & Cie. as there are still some assets held by the bank: "Nous nous permettons de vous rappeler que nous détenons toujours un certain actif pour le compte de la Successio sous rubrique. Nous vous serions obligés de bien vouloir nour mettre en rapport avec le notaire chargé deu règlement de la Succession [...]". - Marc Favrat gained some fame through his relationship with Princess Elisabeth of Romania (1894-1956), who settled in Cannes in the Villa "Rosalba" some years after her expulsion from Romania in 1947 when the Romanian People's Republic was proclaimed. The much younger aspiring artist Favrat became Elisabeth's lover, equerry, and adopted son in the year of her death.

To Princess Elisabeth of Romania (1894-1956) with a poetic description of Patrognet's own feelings of melancholy and regrets over having terminated her service "in the shadow of the Princess": "Majesté, Une rose pour le souvenir que j'enferme dans mon coeur meurtri. Une larme pour le regret de tout le bien que j'aurais pu faire dans l'ombre de Votre Majesté! [...]". - Accompanied by a mounted newspaper article.
