‎[FIRST GREEK EDITION of DANTE'S PURGATORY] [Dante's Purgatorio - La Divina Commedia] Kathartirion. Metaphrasis Konstantinou Mousourou, (1807-1891) [SIGNED by MUSURUS PASHA to CONSTANTINOPLE PATRIARCH AUGUSTE BONETTI].‎

Some little wormholes on cloth and several pages. Pages are partly opened, uncut and untrimmed. Slightly faded on cloth's board. A stamp on first page. Otherwise a very good copy. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In Greek (Modern). [18], 324 p., 'prologos' by Musurus. Konstantinos Mousouros, also known as Kostaki Musurus Pasha, was an Ottoman Greek diplomatic official of the Ottoman Empire who served as ambassador to Greece, Austria, Great Britain, Belgium, and the Netherlands. He was born in 1807 in Constantinople (Istanbul) to a distinguished Phanariote family. His brother, Pavlos Mousouros, also became a diplomat. Mousouros became the first ambassador of the Ottoman Empire to the newly independent Kingdom of Greece in 1840, a position he kept until 1848. In 1847-48 he was a central figure in the events known as Mousourika (??????????), which led to his temporary recall and the breakdown of relations between the two states. On his return to Athens he survived an assassination attempt, leading to his transfer to Vienna. In 1850 he took up the post of Ottoman ambassador to the Great Britain and Ireland, which he kept for 35 consecutive years, until his retirement in 1885. During the same period, he also served as ambassador to the Netherlands (1861-77) and Belgium (1861-75). In 1876-78, he was ex officio a member of the short-lived Senate of the Ottoman Empire. Well educated, in 1883 Mousouros translated Dante's Divine Comedy into ancient Greek. He was married and had a son, Stephanos Mousouros, who later became Prince of Samos. (Wikipedia). He is known as the first translator of Dante's Divine Comedy into modern Greek. Musurus Pasha had an intellectual identity. One of the most important occupations of Musurus Pasha in the last years was the translation of Dante's Divine Comedy from Italian to Greek. Being able to translate a work of Italian classics and masterpieces of western literature should be an indication of Musurus Pasha's performance and intellectual dimension. Due to negative statements about Muhammad and Ali in Dante's work, the book was not allowed to be published within the Ottoman Imperial borders. Despite this, Musurus Pasha asked him to be permitted to publish his translation, but it was not accepted. (Source: Bir Tanzimat diplomati Kostaki Musurus Pasa, (1807-1891)., NURDAN SAFAK). Dante's Divine Comedy, originally called Comedia, and later christened Divina by Giovanni Boccaccio, is widely considered the most important poem of the Middle Ages and the greatest literary work in the Italian language. This is only 'Purgatorio' book from the set. It's signed and inscribed by Musurus Pasha with a dedication in French to Monseigneur Auguste Bonetti as "A la grandeur Monseigneur Bonetti, Hommage de veneration, Musurus". Bonetti was, in 1887, after the appointment of Monsignor Rotelli to the Vatican Ambassador to Paris, the new Constantinople patriarch appointed by Rome for him. First Greek Edition. Extremely rare.‎

He served on the Western Front Staff Committee in the Turkish War of Independence. On December 25, 1926, he was appointed as the National Police Service Director, where he participated in the foundation studies. "The history of Turkish military aviation dates back to 1909 when French aviators were invited to Istanbul to perform demonstrations and the Ottoman High Command began with studies in this field. On December 2 the same year, Turkish skies welcomed the first ever aircraft, when, upon the invitation of the Minister of War, Mahmut Sevket Pasha, a Belgian pilot named Baron de Catters came to Istanbul and performed an exhibition flight with his Voisin biplane. At the end of 1910, a decision was made by the Ottoman High Command to send officers to Europe to be trained as pilots; however due to the financial difficulties faced the Empire at that time, this plan had to be postponed. Only a handful of Turkish students residing in Paris attended flight schools and obtained their certificates there. Mahmut Sevket Pasha could anticipate the importance of military aviation [.] When the Ottoman Empire entered the World War, it had only seven planes and ten pilots available. As soon as the Empire found itself in war, the Russians launched an offensive in the Caucasus front and the Third Army stationed there requested aircraft that would fly reconnaissance flights. Two Bleriot planes named Edremit and Tarik bin Ziyad to be flown by Fesa Bey and Salim Bey were loaded on a transport ship, which was eventually sunk by Russians. The aircraft were lost and the pilots were taken prisoner, ending up in prisoner camps in Siberia. Responding to a request from the Ottoman High Command, a number of German pilots visited the Ottoman Air Force in 1915 and Turkish officers began to be sent to Germany for flight training. At the same time, Cpt. Erich Serno from the German Air Force was given the task of reforming the Turkish military aviation. He came with 12 planes, pilots, technicians, and he was appointed as the director of the Flight School. In those early years of the war, there were serious problems with regard to the transportation of the planes from Germany to Turkey. Germany was in war with Serbia, whereas Bulgaria and Romania remained neutral, which meant that the land routes were blocked. For this reason, aircraft were taken to Southern Hungary by train and then flown to Turkey. It was only after Serbia was defeated and Bulgaria entered the war on the side of the Central Powers that these logistics problems were solved. German contribution in terms of both aircraft and pilots pl‎

Otherwise a very good manuscript. Written on a paper watermarked "Labor: Extra Strong Bank". It includes "How should a Mason be and act?", it gives some hints on the last Ottoman Freemasonry. The history of Freemasonry in Turkey stretches back to the 18th century under Ottoman imperial rule. The first lodge in Turkey was probably established around 1721 in Istanbul by Levantines. Although Freemasonry in Turkey can be traced into the 18th century, for much of that time it was limited to lodges under the jurisdiction of foreign grand lodges, and there was no independent Turkish Grand Lodge. This changed in 1856 when the first Turkish Grand Lodge was established. Sultan Murad V was a member of the lodge, becoming the first and only Ottoman sultan to join. This first Grand Lodge was banned in 1876 by Murad's successor Sultan Abdulhamit Han. The Grand Lodge came back in 1909 in Istanbul under a new administration. Because the Grand Lodge was used to operate in secret, it was closed again in 1922, only to be opened in the year 1925 again. In 1935 the Grand Lodge has closed again. As a result of the repeated closures, the former Grand Lodge and its members were reluctant to support Kemal Atatürk's reformist policies. (Source: Wikipedia). No information about Dr. Nami.‎

‎REFET, (Hazret-i Sehriyârindan, 19. century Ottoman / Turkish scholar) & MEHMED PASAZÂDE A. IHSAN, (19. century Ottoman / Turkish scholar).‎

‎[MANUSCRIPT NEW OTTOMAN CALENDAR and RUZNAMA] Yeni takvim-i Osmânî: Cülûs-i ma'den me'nûs-i hazret-i hilâfetpenâhî 11 Saban fî sene 1193 ve 19 Agustos sene 1292 velâdet-i bihberâ kiymet cenâb-i pâdisâhî, fî 14 Saban sene 1257.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original color manuscript calendar prepared on a fine special paper with 'ahar'. 36x22,5 cm. In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). 2 p. Several ink stains on paper, chipped on extremities. A very good manuscript. It shows astronomic situations, locations of planets and stars, and climates in 1324 [AD 1908]. It starts with high praise to Sultan Abdülhamid II with an old style of color moon & crescent icon. Sealed by Mehmed Pasazâde A. Ihsan. On the verso of paper, can be seen detailed calendar and details of 'ruzname'. Written on 'printed' down of the paper, probably it's prepared for the printing, therefore it's understood that Ihsan and Refet were thinking to print this 'taqwim'. Prepared in the year of the Second Constitutional Regime (II. Mesrutiyet) which was Abdul Hamid II's fall came as a result of the 1908 Young Turk Revolution, and the Young Turks put the 1876 Constitution back into effect. It seems, it's prepared before fall of the Sultan, and for the present to the Sultan. The Second Constitutional Period spanned from 1908 until after World War I when the Ottoman Empire was dissolved. "The starting year of the Hijrî calendar (al-taqwim al-hijri), the fundamental Islamic lunar calendar still in use among Muslims until today, is 622 CE. Its beginning corresponds to the Hijra or emigration of Prophet Muhammed and his followers from Mecca to Medina. It is based on the revolution of the moon around the Earth and consists of twelve months of 29 or 30 days: Muharram (30), Safar (29), Rabî' al-awwal (30), Rabi' al-thani (29), Jumâda al-awwal (30), Jumâda al-thani (29), Rajab (30), Sha'ban (29), Ramadhan (30), Shawwal (29), Dhul-'l-qi'da (30) and Dhul-hijja (29 or 30). The lunar year consists of 354 days, which is 11 days less than the solar year, and every 33 years it falls one year behind the Gregorian calendar. The discrepancy with the solar year, which follows the seasons, meant that Muslim countries also used the solar calendar, and some calendars drawn up by astronomers include the dates according to the European Gregorian calendar named after Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. Ottoman Turkey used both the Islamic lunar calendar and a solar calendar known as the Rumî or Roman calendar, which was based on the Julian calendar introduced since the times of Julius Caesar in 46 BC. The Roman calendar was inherited from the Byzantines and was used by the Ottomans for the taxation of agricultural revenues. The year according to the Rumî or Julian calendar began on 1 March, and the Ottomans took the starting year to be that of the Hijra. To make up for the gain of 11 days made by the solar Rumî calendar over the Islamic calendar, a leap year was deducted from the Rumî calendar every 33 years. A rûzname is a set of tables giving the first days of the months in both the Islamic and Rumî calendars, the date on which the sun enters each sign of the zodiac, and eclipses of the sun and moon. Also known as takvîm-i dâimî (perpetual calendar) or takvîm-i devr-i dâim (calendar of perpetual motion), the ruzname were permanently valid whatever the year. There is no evidence that such calendars were produced in pre-Ottoman times, and they may, therefore, be regarded as a type unique to Ottoman Turkey.". ‎B. NAFIZ, (Turkish Minister of Education).; MAHMUD RAGIB KÖSEMIHAL [GAZIMIHAL], (Turkish musicologist, writer and intellectual), (1900-1961).; [AHMED] ADNAN SAYGUN, (Composer and musician who was one of the 'Turkish Fives' Group, ethnomusicologist),‎

‎Typescript document signed 'Maarif Vekili B. Nafiz' about Mahmud Ragip Kösemihal and Adnan Saygun's Anatolian travels for the compilation of Turkish music, sent to 'Musiki Muallim Mektebi'.‎

‎Very Good Turkish Original typescript (TLS) and an important historical document signed by the Minister of Education. 25x19 cm. In Turkish (Latin letters). 1 p. Sent to "Musiki Muallim Mektebi" [i.e. The school of music teachers]. A document stating that the relevant travel planned in advance and submitted to the Ministry of National Education is deemed appropriate, but stating that the relevant ministry cannot provide financial assistance. Ahmet Adnan Saygun was a Turkish composer, musicologist, and writer on music. One of a group of composers known as the Turkish Five who pioneered western classical music in Turkey, his works show a mastery of Western musical practice, while also incorporating traditional Turkish folk songs and culture. When alluding to folk elements he tends to spotlight one note of the scale and weave a melody around it, based on a Turkish mode. His extensive output includes five symphonies, five operas, two piano concertos, concertos for violin, viola, and cello, and a wide range of chamber and choral works. The Times called him "the grand old man of Turkish music, who was to his country what Jean Sibelius is to Finland, what Manuel de Falla is to Spain, and what Béla Bartók is to Hungary". Following the operas, he was neglected in Ankara State Conservatory by its founder Paul Hindemith. He moved to Istanbul as part of the theory faculty at the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory. In 1936 Béla Bartók visited Turkey to research the native folk music. Saygun accompanied Bartók on his travels around the country, collecting and transcribing folk songs all through the Anatolia and Osmaniye (a region of Adana), Turkey. Saygun gained immense knowledge of Bartók's style of writing during this trip and learned a great deal about string quartets: they became great friends. In 1939 he was invited back to Ankara to further promote Western musical activities and practices. A year later he formed his own organization, Ses ve Tel Birligi, which showcased recitals and concerts throughout the country, further developing public knowledge of Western classical music. Gazimihal was a Turkish musicologist, researcher, historian, and writer. He, who died in 1961, was also the uncle of famous pianist Idil Biret.‎

‎WILLIAM GIFFORD PALGRAVE, (English priest, soldier, traveller, orientalist and Arabist), (1826-1888).‎

‎Autograph letter signed 'W. Gifford Palgrave' with his original print portrait photograph with a fez.‎

‎Very Good English Original autograph letter signed (ALS) 'W. Gifford Palgrave', to "Dear Joseph", regretting he is unable to make the journey William Palgrave Gifford. Speaker's Court, the Palace, Westminster, undated. 15x10 cm. In English. 2 pp. in good condition, with a separate photographic portrait of Palgrave. William Gifford Palgrave was an English priest, soldier, traveller, and Arabist, author of A Personal Narrative of a Year's Journey through Central and Eastern Arabia (1862-1863). Palgrave was born in Westminster. He was the son of Sir Francis Palgrave and Elizabeth Turner, daughter of the banker Dawson Turner. His brothers were Francis Turner Palgrave, Inglis Palgrave and Reginald Palgrave. He was educated at Charterhouse School, then occupying its original site near Smithfield, and under the head-mastership of Dr Saunders, afterwards Dean of Peterborough. Among other honours he won the school gold medal for classical verse, and proceeded to Trinity College, Oxford, where he obtained a scholarship, graduating First Class Lit. Hum., Second Class Math., 1846. He went straight from college to India and served for a time in the 8th (The King's) Regiment of Foot, Bombay Native Infantry, H.I.C. Shortly after this, he became a Roman Catholic, was ordained a priest, and joined the order of the Jesuits, (Society of Jesus), and served as a member of the order in India, Rome, and in Syria, where he acquired a colloquial command of Arabic. He convinced his superiors to support a mission to the interior of Arabia, which at that time was terra incognita to the rest of the world. He also gained the support of the French emperor, Napoleon III, representing to him that better knowledge of Arabia would benefit French imperialistic schemes in Africa and the Middle East. Palgrave then returned to Syria, where he assumed the identity of a travelling Syrian physician. Stocking his bags with medicines and small trade goods, and accompanied by one servant, he set off for Najd, in north-central Arabia. He travelled as a Christian. The service he would do for the Society of Jesus and the French empire would be as a spy, not a missionary. Palgrave became friendly with Faisal bin Turki bin Abdullah Al Saud while in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Faisal's son, Abdul Rahman bin Faisal, asked Palgrave to get him strychnine. Palgrave believed that Abdul wanted to poison his father. Palgrave was accused of espionage and was almost executed for his Christian beliefs.‎

Although the title may have been applied to the head of the palace harem eunuchs from the empire's early years, the formal office, known as The agha-yi Darüssaade (or, Dar al-Sa'ada), literally "Commander of the Abode Felicity", dates to 996/1588, when Sultan Murad III (r. 1574-1595) transferred the supervision of the Evkâfü'l-Haremeyn (Awkâf al-Haramayn, the imperial pious foundations for the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina) to the head of harem eunuchs from the chief of the eunuchs who guarded the sultan's privy chamber in Topkapi Palace's third court. Until the 14th/19th century, the post was always attached to the supervision of the Evkâfü'l-Haremeyn. Most holders of the office, like most harem eunuchs generally, were Habesî (Habashi, Abyssinian), which in this case was a broad designation encompassing much of the Horn of Africa. Photograph on the advertisement shows three members and brothers of Üç Hürel. Üç Hürel was a Turkish rock band, formed in 1970 by brothers Onur, Haldun and Feridun Hürel. Considered as among Turkey's most popular Anatolian rock bands, the band performed folk-driven pop and rock music and occasionally also paraphrased classic folk songs with considerable ingenuity. Their lyrics generally featured themes such as peace and freedom. Hürel brothers were born in Trabzon and later moved to Istanbul due to family business. In 1966, the brothers formed their first band, Yankilar, which was later renamed to Istanbul Dörtlüsü. The band performed in small music halls and tried to synthesize Turkish music and traditional rock formats. After forming a number of other bands, including Trio Istanbul, Oguzlar, and Biraderler, Feridun became a member of the Selcuk Alagöz Orchestra. Haldun and Onur later joined him to gain experience and earn money for new equipment. In 1970, they left the orchestra to form 3 Hur-El. Following the release of their debut single in 1970, "Ve Ölum/Seytan Bunun Neresinde," the band released two LPs and more than ten singles in six years. In 1977, Haldun and Feridun left the band for mandatory military service. Coping with the loss of their mother to a traffic accident, the brothers quit music. Feridun moved to England but returned without any significant accomplishments, subsequently returning and specializing in advertising. Onur took a job as an instructor and Haldun started a ceramics and textiles business. 3 Hür-El reunited in 1996, releasing two records in 1996 and 1999, respectively. The band's 1970 song, "Ve Ölüm", was featured in the 2013 Serge Bozon film, Tip Top. (Source: Wikipedia).‎

‎PETULA CLARK, (British singer, actress and composer), (1932-).‎

‎Original postcard signed and inscribed 'Petula'.‎

‎Very Good French Original postcard shows Clark's color portrait photo signed and inscribed by Petula Clark as 'Tres amicalement'. 15x11 cm. In French. The most commercially successful female singer in British chart history, Petula Clark was born November 15, 1932, in Epsom, England. Trained to sing by her soprano mother, Clark embarked on a stage career at the age of seven; soon she was a fixture on British radio programs and began hosting her own regular show, Pet's Parlour -- a series spotlighting patriotic songs designed to boost the morale of wartime audiences -- at the tender age of 11. After entertaining British troops alongside fellow child stars Julie Andrews and Anthony Newley, Clark made her film debut with A Medal for the General in 1944. By the dawn of the '50s she was a superstar throughout the U.K., with a résumé of close to two-dozen films; 1954's "The Little Shoemaker" was her first Top 20 single, while 1960's "Sailor" was her first chart-topper. Still, Clark struggled with her inability to shed her adolescent image. After selling over a million copies of 1961's "Romeo," she married and relocated to France, establishing a strong fan base there on the strength of hits including "Ya-Ya Twist," "Chariot," and "Monsieur," which spotlighted a new, more sophisticated pop sound anchored by her crystalline vocals. Riding the wave of the British Invasion, Clark was finally able to penetrate the U.S. market in 1964 with the Grammy-winning "Downtown," the first single by a British woman ever to reach number one on the American pop charts. It was also the first in a series of American Top Ten hits (most written and arranged by Tony Hatch) that also included 1965's "I Know a Place" and 1966's "I Couldn't Live Without Your Love," and the number one smash "My Love." At the same time, she remained a huge star throughout Europe, topping the British charts in 1967 with "This Is My Song," taken from the film A Countess from Hong Kong. In addition to hosting her own BBC series, she also starred in the 1968 NBC television special Petula, which triggered controversy when sponsors requested that a segment with guest Harry Belafonte be cut in deference to Southern affiliates; ultimately, the show aired in its intended form. As the '60s drew to a close, Clark's commercial stature slipped, although singles like "Don't Sleep on the Subway," "The Other Man's Grass Is Always Greener," and "Kiss Me Goodbye" still charted on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1968, she revived her film career by starring in Finian's Rainbow, followed a year later by Goodbye, Mr. Chips. In later years, Clark focused primarily on international touring, headlining the 1981 London revival of Rodgers & Hammerstein's The Sound of Music; after starring in the 1990 musical Someone Like You, which she also co-wrote, she made her Broadway debut in Blood Brothers in 1993. Additionally, in 1988, an acid house remix of "Downtown" reached the U.K. Top Ten, another honor for the female singer awarded the most gold records in British pop history. Throughout the 2000s, Clark toured fairly steadily across the globe. Her 2002 shows in France at the Olympia were recorded and released on CD and DVD, but no new studio recordings were forthcoming until she teamed with Irish band the Saw Doctors for a new version of "Downtown" in 2011. Soon after, she began working with producer John Williams on an album. Made up of newly written songs and covers, as well as a new take on "Downtown," Lost in You was issued in early 2013. Just three years later, Clark returned with another studio album, From Now On, which featured several newly penned compositions as well as covers of classic numbers by the Beatles, Steve Winwood, and Peggy Lee. In October 2016, Clark set out on a U.K. tour in support of the album. That same year also saw the release of Natural Love: The Scotti Brothers Recordings, a collection of the country- and pop-oriented material Clark cut in the '80s. A French-language album, Vu D'ici, arrived in‎
