economist
Two page ALs from the Vicarage Bedfont Middlesex June 15th 1821 to his prospective publisher. He sends material relating to his new volume. His friend Lord Howden had sent the addressee six or eight names. He asks for the prospectus to be advertised in The New Times and Morning Chronicle. He wishes to keep the "high ground". He will be in town next week when he hopes his list of friends = subscribers may make . a respectable appearance. He has many friends to whom he has not yet applied. He has received a number of letters that encourage him to proceed. Worn and very slightly soiled with two small tears at edges not affecting legibility. Jones was a clergyman turned economist in 1833 when he became a professor of political economy at King's College London. He broke from Ricardo's system and refuted -accurately- an important conclusion of Malthus' re. population. Here we seem to have evidence of what might have been his first book on economics apparently unpublished. Good. Manuscript. unknown

A fourteen line note in Gurney's hand requesting the sending of some books to Sophia Arnold of Tavistock Street Bedford Square; dated Norwich January 4th 1814. An original hand painted silhouette of the bust of Gurney heightened in white. A carte vista taken from a painting of Gurney published by A. W. Bennett. All these three items are mounted on paper and have been extracted from an album. Offered with a small steel engraving of Earlham Hall Norfolk the home of Joseph John Gurney. Gurney was a banker in Norwich a Quaker his views and actions led to a schism among American Quakers. With his sister Elizabeth he campaigned relentlessly for prison reform the abolition of capital punishment and anti-slavery laws. Very Good. Manuscript. unknown

Savage Club Menu for the 1929 House Dinner signed by the Chairman Tom Purvis with original cartoon sketch
On the verso of the menu the Savage Club cartoonist evidently portrays Tom Purvis in his former guise as a member of the Artists' Rifles in action during WW1 with his paint brush and easel not his rifle. In the wide margin of the printed image Tom Purvis has added a humorous signed pencil sketch of a cursing British Tommy looking on in shock. Tom Purvis studied at the Camberwell School of Art he served with the Artists' Rifles in France during WW1. From 1923 he was heavily involved in the creation of art work advertising especially for LNER. By the late 1930s he was described as the " biggest name in British commercial design.". Very Good.
