This American track and field athlete specialized in the high hurdles a college star and record-setter who went on to compete in the 1932 Olympics where he earned silver in the 110-meter high hurdles event he later became head coach in track and field at University of Florida 1937-64. A bold signature in black ballpoint with inscription penned above "Best Wishes to Richard Laade" and credentials below "winner of silver medal / in 1932 Olympics in / 120 yard high hurdles" heavy stock 5" X 3" card n.p. Gainesville FL 1985 January 26. Fine. A concise summation of his claim to Olympic fame. With original envelope partly addressed by Beard. Accompanied by two scarce handsomely engraved mementos of the 1932 Olympics: First a printed admission ticket in blue and red ink heavy stock 3" X 2" for the "TRACK & / FIELD / Aug. 5 / 2:30 P.M. / GEN. ADMISSION / $2.00." Decorative border main title along top "Xth OLYMPIAD" ornate Olympic symbol with American shield at center. Very good. Bit of edgewear with minor border loss at upper right. Also a second printed admission ticket in brown ink heavy stock 4½" X 2½" ornate borders and scrolls for the "American Football / Olympic Stadium" on August 8 at 8p.m. Left margin specifies "STAIR / 23 / ROW / 63 / Seat / 107." Good plus. A tad age toned and mildly edgeworn more so along right margin which shows several small edge chips. Verso shows a seating chart for this stadium. An uncommon trio. unknown

This author specialized in spinning yarns for young adults in such books as "Boy Scouts Afloat; or Scouting on the Mississippi in a House Boat" 1918 "Boy Scouts Courageous: Stories of Scout Valor and Daring" 1918 and "The Hidden Islands" 1920. AMS 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. Near fine. On custom letterhead Walden neatly prints the name of his latest novel -- "The Voodoo Gold Trail / by / Walter Walden" -- plus title of the first chapter and a lengthy section of the first couple paragraphs signing a second time boldly at the conclusion. While the admirer who wrote him requested an actual working manuscript page Walden instead has neatly written out this passage -- though likely he copied it off of his original manuscript for it bears words and phrases which he's crossed out. From the collection of Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item. Also present is a copy of "The Voodoo Gold Trail" Boston: Small Maynard & Company 1922 a very good first edition of this small 8vo volume in blue cloth. unknown

Florida senator 1936-51 and representative 1963-89 who as the oldest member of Congress pushed through legislation outlawing a mandatory retirement age. TNS 1p 8" X 10½" Washington DC 1969 June 30. Addressed to Richard C. Laade. Near fine. On "Congress of the United States" letterhead Pepper agrees to a request from an admirer. Accompanied by a fine original glossy 8½" X 6½" black-and-white news agency photograph showing then Senator Pepper on the steps of the Capitol at a political gathering. Printed caption affixed to verso dates this 27 June 1947 captions it "Townsendites Renew 'Assault' on Capital Hill" and describe the scene: "Townsendites here for the 7th Annual Townsend Plan National Convention converged on Capitol Hill this morning to urge Congress to pass the Townsend National Prosperity Plan Bill which is now before the House for the 13th successive year. Photo shows left to right: Senator Claude Pepper D of Fla.; Dr. Francis E. Townsend 80-year-old creator of the pension plan." The old-age pension scheme of this physician and activist 1867-1960 sprang up during the Great Depression and while it never passed it did prove influential when Congress devised the Social Security system. unknown

This noted Scottish attorney held high crown offices and was elected a conservative member of Parliament from Marylebone 1874-80; a man of letters he authored a number of books on historical and literary topics. ALS 3pp lettersheet 4½" X 7¼" n.p. 7 May 1874. Addressed to Dr. Tristram. Very good. Writing on stationery bearing an oval blind-embossed "House of Commons" imprint in his bold sloppy but legible hand the newly-elected m.p. writes a constituent about a touchy church issue: "I would willingly help you if I could for I think it would be very lamentable to have the peace of the Congregation disturbed by the introduction of Ritualistic preachers. But I feel sure that any interference on my part with the patronage of the Prime Minister would be looked on by him as rather an impertinence & would do more harm than good. Would it not be well to bring on the part of influential members of the Congregation the facts mentioned in your letter under his notice This seems to me the best plan you can adopt for preventing the appointment of a Clergyman whose views would be distressful of the majority." The best-known Shakespearian interpreter of the late 19th century was this English actor who toured extensively and played Broadway to great success often producing and directing as well; his performance in London in 1888 in the title role of "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" earned him consideration as a suspect in the then-current Jack the Ripper murders. ALS 3pp lettersheet 5" X 8" New York NY 4 July 1895. Addressed to Charles Henry Meltzer. Very good. Lightly age toned with some discreet expert archival mends on folds. On letterhead of the Garrick Theater in which Mansfield premiered Meltzer's new play "The Story of Rodion the Student" a stage version of Dostoyevski's "Crime and Punishment" on December 3 the actor writes the playwright on some future play. In part: "I am glad to receive your report of progress and all your ideas seem Excellent. I shall also be more than pleased to receive the first act and -- I am sure -- to be pleased when I read it. It is also good to hear from a man whose motto appears to be: 'Labor voluptas'. When you have finished 'Le Pere Prodigue' you will I hope commence at once on a play for me." Meltzer 1853-1936 was an English dramatist and translator who penned a number of plays though the new play Mansfield refers to in this letter appears never to have been completed. Excellent stage content -- and attractive despite mild wear. unknown

What Bill Mauldin and "Willie and Joe" were to World War Two G.I.s "Wally" Wallgren and his "Helpful Hints" cartoons in "Stars and Stripes" were to World War One doughboys for both poked fun and army life army chores army regulations and the drudgery of military life; Wallgren served with the 5th Marines in the First Division in France after the war collecting his cartoons into the popular "Wally: His Cartoons of the A.E.F." in 1919; later he cartooned for "American Legion Magazine" and then had another strip called "Hoosegow Herman." Original cartoon in black ink signed simply "W" at lower right heavy stock 7" X 3¼" sheet n.p. n.y. Wallgren's Drexel Hill Pennsylvania home address lightly inkstamped on verso. Near fine. Charming scene -- perhaps a "Helpful Hunts" installment -- depicting two soldiers side by side at a table the G.I. at left showing the G.I. at right how to open a bottle of French wine. "See!!" he says as he thumps the underside of the bottle and the cork strikes with a "Pop" in his friend's eye. Cream 8½" X 6½" mat with 5¼" X 2½" opening. Wallgren's early work is surprisingly scarce and this is a delightful example. unknown

This popular and influential English actor ruled the London stage with his interpretations of Shakespeare and other tragedies from the teens through the 1840s touring America successfully as well. Third-person ANS 1p integral address leaf 4½" X 7¼" Covent Garden Theatre London 20 November n.y. Addressed to "Woolf Esq. / 153. Drury Lane." Very good. Mildly age toned and lightly soiled. "Mr. Macready presents his Compts. to Mr. Woolf -- would be very happy to see him for a few minutes conversation either this evening after ten o'Clock or tomorrow morning. Red wax seal on integral address portion bears "Royal Covent Garden Theatre" imprint. This theatre was the site of Macready's first London appearance as Orestes in a production of Racine's "The Distressed Mother" in September 1816 -- but the 1836 watermark on this sheet likely dates this letter to 1838-39 when he served as manager of this theatre. WOOD, James R (1816-82)

This pioneering New York physician joined Bellevue Hospital in 1847 and worked his way up to chief surgeon along the way helping to found Bellevue Medical College in 1861 and creating the first ambulance service and the first training school for nurses; he championed the "Dissecting Bill" a statute that helped provide cadavers for medical dissection and research for medical students thus eliminating the practice of body snatching and paving the way for instruction using actual bodies as well as textbooks. LS 1p lettersheet 5" X 8" New York NY 1862 April 20. Addressed to Thomas C. Acton 1823-98 New York City police commissioner politician reformer. Very good. Bit of sporadic age toning; original folds none weakened. Wood tells the new appointed 1860 police commissioner that "The bearer Thomas Flynn is anxious of procuring some employment -- I have known him along while and believe him to be an honest worthy and industrious young man -- If you can aid him in any way I shall feel much obliged." Boldly signed in thick brown ink. Wood's plea may just have worked for only a few years later one Thomas Flynn appears in reports issued by the city comptroller's office. An interesting and early piece from the year after the Medical College's founding. unknown

This South Carolina attorney and legislator served as the fifth Secretary of Commerce under Franklin D. Roosevelt 1933-38 in which capacity he proved critical to implementing FDR's "New Deal"; in 1939 he served as U.S. ambassador to Canada. Bold signature in ink on a stiff 3" X 1½" card with "Secretary of Commerce' typed below the signature. Very good. Quite faint paper clip imprint. Original Department of Commerce transmittal envelope cancelled on 1 February 1936 also present. A choice example from the height of his fame. unknown

This American cartoonist supposedly created more than 24 comic strips including "The Inventor" which ran from 1904 to 1914 and assisted with four others; one cartooning historian describes him as "an absolute whirling dervish at the drawing board producing more material for the daily pages than anyone except the great George Frink'; he worked for the "Chicago Daily News" ca. 1908-24 and the "New York Herald-Tribune" 1925-42. On a heavy stock 5" X 3" card the cartoonist pens "Sincerely yours" and signs in cursive adding his cartoonist's printed stylized "T. Brown" alongside. Very good. Faintly age toned with mounting traces on verso. Along the bottom edge is typed "Cartoonist 'Chicago Daily News'. / April 29 1922." Very uncommon. unknown

The famed English hostess par excellence at age 18 married the 41-year-old Robert Crewe-Milnes at that time The Lord Houghton 1885-95 and later the Earl of Crewe 1895-1911 and Marquess of Crewe 1911-1945 British politician and statesman who served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland 1882-95 Leader of the House of Lords 1908-16 and twice as Lord President of the Council 1905-08 1915-16. ALS written on behalf of and signed for her husband 3pp lettersheet 7½" X 5" n.p. 1907 July 23. Addressed to "My dear George." Near fine. Boldly penned in black ink on letterhead bearing the oval blindstamp at top of first page of "Privy Council Office" the 26-year-old Marchioness of Crew here pens a retained draft of one of her husband's letters noting "Private" at upper left of first page. Interesting if cryptic reading in part: "I need not say that we desire to proceed with great caution in the matters which the Bishop of Birmingham wishes us to discuss tomorrow & that we shall give all due weight to the opinions which you and others express on behalf of Oxford. Nothing very definite I imagine will come of the debate: but it ought to be an interesting discussion. I hope you are tolerably well I wish we could have a tall one of these days." She signs off "sd Crewe" and adds a postscript. Most unusual in this format. unknown

This Irish-born British literary critic essayist and satirist is remembered for his controversial 1831 edition of Boswell's "Life of Johnson"; as Member of Parliament and long-time secretary to the admiralty 1810-30 he is best known for slashing the size of the Royal Navy. ALS 4pp lettersheet 4½" X 7" Aldeburgh Great Britain 1831 October 2. Addressed to George Lamb 1784-1834 British politician and writer; appointed under-secretary of state in 1830. Very good. Mild wear; being a four-page lettersheet there's remnants of old archival tape along the fold. Croker comments on Lamb for answering his letter to British secretary of state The Viscount Melbourne -- George Lamb's own brother William Lamb. Regards some cryptic naval incident -- in part: "I think it proper to observe that you do not appear to have seen the difficulty which I intended to submit to Lord Melbourne. My doubt did not apply so much to the treatment of the seamen who might be stranded as to that of the town into which such persons may have been thrown" and he goes on at length to explain that the whole town may have been subjected to the stranded seamen. Good content from the tail end of Croker's admiralty career and the beginning of his literary career. unknown

This American diplomatic wunderkind had served as U.S. Consul to Singapore U.S. Consul and Consul General to Hong Kong negotiator in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War editor of San Francvisco's "Overland Monthly" author several books such as "The Panglima Muda" 1894 and "Tales of the Malayan Coast" 1899 -- all by the age of 37 when with wife and two children he drowned in San Francisco Bay when his steamer was returning there from Hong Kong in a thick fog. TLS 1p 8¼" X 10" Hong Kong 23 December 1898. Addressed to Jessie L. Gladwin. Good only. Thin and rather fragile age-toned beige stock with delicate original folds and numerous small chips along lower edge. Good content written several months after the conclusion of the Spanish-American War August 13 reading in part: "By the time your very kind request of August 1st arrived the war was practically finished so although it would have given me great pleasure to have answered it its object would have been defeated. The "Red Cross" Society has done splendid work in Manila and we are all very proud of our American women." Boldly signed in full in brown ink. Interesting and unusual. unknown

Kennedy's brother-in-law husband of Eunice Kennedy was an attorney politician and activist who served in both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations; he's considered the founder and served as first director of the Peace Corps 1961-66 later also directing the Office of Economic Opportunity 1964-68 and serving as U.S. Ambassador to France 1968-70. TLS 1p 8" X 10½" Washington DC 24 May 1965. Addressed to Kenneth M. Anglemire. Near fine. On "Office of Economic Opportunity" letterhead Shriver thanks the president of "Who's Who in America" in Chicago for asking him to take part in "Illinois Day" at the New York World's Fair but regrets that "I shall be testifying before Congress that day and therefore shall be unable to come to New York." ALS 2pp separate leaves 8½" X 11" Racine WI 12 April 1933. Addressed to John G. Leiser. Near fine. On bright yellow onionskin-type paper penned in vibrant purple ink Gleason writes this admirer an Illinois school teacher with advice about studying and painting birds. In part: "I am happy to hear that you love to study birds and that you have a nature study class. To me the study is a great source of pleasure. I try to see in the study of birds symbols of the wonders of all nature. I try to bring thru their study a harmonious relation of the contradictory elements of experience. Hence my preoccupation is with the physical reality of my medium color and drawing thru the character of the motive I try to proportion into pleasurable relations the color with the various forms and in harmony with associations we thru common experience bring to it. Probably nothing delights the eye o man more than a beautiful bird and for the past several years I have found great pleasure in going out early in the morning sketching birds. In order to paint any particular bird one must first study for size proportion character color etc." Goes into much further detail on painting birds noting near the close "I have only one book published known as 'Birds We Know" and signing boldly. In 1895 Albert K. Smiley owner of the Mohonk Mountain House a prestigious Ulster County New York summer resort began the Lake Mohonk Conference on International Arbitration an annual event that lasted until 1916 and helped create the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague Netherlands which still functions today; upon Smiley's death in 1912 his position as host was assumed by his brother Daniel well known in climatology circles for beginning an official daily weather reading at Lake Mohonk on January 1st 1896 that continues to this day at the aptly-named Daniel Smiley Research Center. TLS 1p 8½" X 11" Mohonk Lake NY 25 September 1913. Addressed to General Horatio King 1837-1918 Medal of Honor-winning Civil War soldier politician and author. Very good. Lightly age toned more so near edges with light edgewear. Nice and relevant content on letterhead of the famed conference for which he's best known: "Accept my best thanks for the bronze memento of the recent Gettysburg celebration" he writes "as well as for the very appropriate verses written by you. These are appreciated by me as one who counts the Gettysburg celebration as being a marked event in national which is after all a large part of the international peace." This famed California isolationist and progressive helped found the Progressive Party in 1912 and was chosen Theodore Roosevelt's running mate on that ticket in the 1912 presidential election; he served California as its 23rd governor 1911-17 and senator 1917-45. TNS 1p 8" X 10½" Washington DC 25 April 1919. Addressed to S.R. Gaines. Very good. Some offsetting perhaps from long-ago newsprint contact with faint age toning and minor edgewear. On "United States Senate / Committee on Military Affairs" letterhead Johnson complies with an autograph request signing large and bold in full. Accompanied by a superb original 8½" X 6½" glossy black-and-white news agency photograph a closeup of cigar-chomping Johnson and another conferring. Newsprint text tipped to verso dates the image 9 July 1945 titles it "At Charter Hearing" and describes the scene: "At ratification hearing on the United Nations charter which opened today in Washington Senator Hiram Johnson of Cal. and Senator Tom Connally of Texas." Less than one month later -- on the same day the U.S. dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima -- Johnson died. unknown

Rounded corners as issued. Outstanding carte-de-visite half-length portrait of Boulanger in three-piece suit and tie right hand in pants pocket and left hand dramatically foisting a cigarette. Sharp backstamp in brown of photographer Bingham in Paris. On the blank margin below his portrait Boulanger signs boldly in brown ink with his usual crabbed "G. Boulanger." This successful Ohio-born industrialist investor and businessman practiced law and entered politics in New Mexico serving in Congress 1873-77; he served in the Union Army during the Civil War father and brother joined the Confederacy and was filled with disgust over the carnage and cruelty he witnessed so when Benjamin Harrison appointed him Secretary of War in 1891 no one felt the irony more than he but he served until 1893; later he served West Virginia as U.S. Senator 1895-1911. Big bold "With regards of / S.B. Elkins / Nov 10./85" on a 5 3/4" X 2" heavy stock buff slip n.p. Very good. Bit of irregular inoffensive offsetting from long-ago acidic contact. Judging from the paper stock almost certainly the top portion of a pamphlet likely of a speech Elkins gave such as the 1885 "The Industrial Question in the United States" an address he gave before the Alumni Association of the University of the State of Missouri June 3 1885 published in 36 pages by Styles & Cash in New York. This Austrian painter sculptor and printmaker was a surrealist who has been described as "the first psychoanalytical painter" but it is for co-founding the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism in the late 1950s together with Ernst Fuchs Wolfgang Hutter and several others that he's best remembered. Color PS 5 3/4" X 4" n.p. n.y. lightly pencilled February 1986 on verso. Near fine. Glossy heavy stock reproduction of Hausner's 1948 surrealist painting "Forum der Einwartsgewendeten Optik" from the Historical Museum of the City of Vienna signed large and bold in blue ballpoint along the blank lower margin. Apparently the lower right portion of a pay slip from one of Schuyler's postings as a Consul signed boldly in brown ink with "salary for quarter ending" in his hand above; after the printed word "Consul" beneath his signature he pens the word "General." This American politician and diplomat represented New York in Congress 1881-88 served as U.S. Minister to Spain during the Spanish-American War and in 1906 was named president of the National Publicity Bill Organization which advocated campaign finance reform. Attractive and bold signature below a typewritten "Very sincerely yours" on a 4¼" X 1 3/4" slip n.p. n.y. Near fine. Though not dated the typed letter from which this was clipped shows a black mourning border on the left and right sides which likely dates it to the months following the death on October 20 1935 of his wife Jessie Robbins Belmont born 1858 -- who caused a scandal in 1899 when she divorced Henry T. The most accomplished American stage actress of the early 20th century began as a child and while she did it all -- comedy tragedy -- it is for Ibsen and Shakespeare roles that she's best known; she appeared in silent film versions of two of her greatest stage hits "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" 1913 and "Vanity Fair" 1915. ALS 2pp single leaf 5½" X 8½" Los Angeles CA n.y. Addressed to "Dearest Drucie" Drusilla Pierce a Los Angeles friend. Very good. Original folds none weakened evident; light glass ring near top of second page smudges half a dozen words. On "Hotel Van Nuys" letterhead Fiske urges her friend to " run over to Hollywood any time next Sunday evening -- & have a little time with me and with old-old-old friends. and then when we meet we can plan for the meeting of Tuesday. I am deeply eager you shall attend with me -- next Tuesday. Save that day." Arranges details gives addresses etc. Signed simply "Minnie." Undated but likely 1920s vintage. unknown

The great English actor filmmaker playwright and author won an Academy Award in 1930 for "Disraeli" -- the first Briton to do so -- and is best known for portrayals of this and other historical figures. TLS 1p 7" X 9" London England 21 February 1944. Addressed to "Drucie" Drusilla Pierce a Los Angeles friend. Very good. Faint original folds. On imprinted "George Arliss" letterhead Arliss chats cordially with an old friend noting "that you are fairly well except for your legs. The only advantage you gain is that you are able to get into friendly intercourse with the crossing-cops. You will be glad to know that our London policemen are still wonderful." Of the current London theatre scene he comments: "I know very little about theatrical conditions here because Flo's sight prevents us from going to the theatre. We had one break however when we went to see the Lunts who have made a tremendous success over here. It was certainly a beautiful performance." Signed simply "George" in blue ink. Alfred and Lynn Fontanne opened a production of Robert E. Sherwood's "There Shall Bo No Night" in London's Aldwych Theatre on December 15 1943 and it's no doubt this performance to which Arliss refers. Attractive -- an interesting glimpse into Arliss's life near its end when war and sickness curtailed his activities! unknown

Although Raft like James Cagney could dance elegantly no actor was more typecast as a gangster than this star of the 1930s and '40s whose roles in such films as "Scarface" 1932 was reinforced by his real world mafia connections; in Billy Wilder's "Some Like It Hot" 1959 and Jerry Lewis's "The Ladies Man" 1961 he played a comic caricature of his earlier self. Hasso was the Swedish-born "next Garbo" who appeared in a number of films in the 1940s; in later years she achieved some success as a writer and composer. "To Donald / a swell fellow / My Best / George Raft" in blue ballpoint on an irregular roughly oval-shaped slip about 4½" X 3" n.p. n.y. ca. 1960. Very good. On a heavy linen stock with three small tape stains slightly touching upon a couple letters. "Febr. 3rd 69 / With all good wishes / Signe Hasso" in bold black fineline heavy stock 5" X 3" card n.p. Fine. With original envelope. This nice pair is accompanied by an unsigned 10" X 8" black-and-white photograph a closeup of the pair dancing together in the 1945 film noir classic "Johnny Angel." This Maine representative 1877-99 and twice Speaker of the House 1889-91 1895-99 was known as "Czar Reed" for his passage of "Reed's Rules" which greatly increased the Speaker's powers. A large and bold full signature plus "Portland / Me" in brown ink on a heavy stock 4" X 2½" slip. Near fine. Accompanied by an ALS from the Young Mens Republican Club of Stratford Iowa date 1894 October 23 requesting "your autograph and if agreeable some political sentiment. as a memento from our choice for President in '96." Not surprisingly Reed declines to be goaded into penning "some political sentiment" that could be viewed as throwing his hat into the presidential ring prematurely! Original House of Representatives envelope from Reed also present. A fun trio. unknown
