An excellent and fully captioned photograph album of summer trout fishing and camping in the Rangeley district at Loon Lake Maine and other places of interest. The photographer is unnamed but evidently from Boston or the north shore with some connections further south on Long Island. The album records two trips to Maine: the first to Loon Lake in 1915 and the J. Lewis York family fishing camp including several fine images of York often with a bear cub on a lead 66 photographs on 17 leaves ; and the second undated to Green Lake Mike Marr's camp at Indian Pond to Squaw Mountain Pond with Fred Lessor guide and to Moosehead Lake and the Kennebec 36 photographs on 9 leaves. Three trips to Nova Scotia in 1914 1919 and 1923 to the Kedgemakoogee Rod and Gun Club on Kedgemakoogee Lake the Shelburne River and other trout fishing excursions 139 photographs on 37 leaves. In the June 1923 trip Irving Lake Dam on the Shelburne is described as the best fishing water of the trip. A few participants are identified: E.L. Matlack O.H. Muir and Wilson Forrest and the unidentified grinning angler with a large string of trout may well be the compiler. As well as scenes from the Piping Rock Horse Show Long Island noting Miss Lansdale up in several snapshots 22 photographs on 5 leaves; and a trip to Atlantic City at the end with the Shriners parade and seaside scenes 27 photographs on 7 leaves. First edition. 2 folding maps 7 line drawings and 7 tipped-in albumen photograph portraits with fine manuscript captions. 143 pp. 1 vols. 4to. In the Yellowstone: "Such fishing I have never had before" One of the earliest descriptions of Yellowstone being the account of a hunting expedition to the north-western territories undertaken by the author and six officers plus a contingent of enlisted men including US Secretary of War Gen. Wm. W. Belknap and US Inspector General R. B. Marcy who fell ill and nearly perished on the trip as well as Gen. James W. Forsyth Lt. G. C. Doane Gen N. B. Sweitzer and Col. George L. Gillespie whose photographic portraits illustrate the book. The party traveled some 5000 miles by rail stage steamer and horseback in 53 days seeking elk deer buffalo and other game as well as wild fowl; due to the season of the year game was not as plentiful as hoped but the abundance of trout exceeded all expectations and almost 500 large ones were caught see pp. 54-57. Another impediment to hunting were the "hostile Sioux who were constantly lurking around in great numbers;" it was perhaps prophetic that on September 3 1875 they met and were entertained by General George Armstrong Custer of the 7th Cavalry at Fort Lincoln just nine months before the Battle of Little Big Horn. As befitting "one of the most famous sportsmen in the country" Custer and his wife and sister lived in great state on the post surrounded by the General's hunting trophies of which there were many. Circumstances prevented Strong from retaining the head or hide of the huge leader of a buffalo herd which he shot but the event is described in lively detail. Also noteworthy are the author's splendid descriptions of Yellowstone and the surrounding territory. Many accounts of Yellowstone and the Northwest were to follow but this one in its depiction of the country the sport and the individuals who participated in this early adventure is a gem and equally rare. Siberian Sport & Travel in 1903. Presentation copy inscribed by the author to Captain H. W. Seton-Karr who accompanied Swayne on this trip and who has inserted 25 larger photographs approx. 3 x 5 inches often inserted on the blank verso of the printed plates including several of Seton-Karr with trophy heads of Ovis ammon on Asian hillsides and in Wimbledon in 1883 as well as of scenes and persons from the Siberian trip many captioned in the margins; 4 smaller photographs captioned in ink; 4 photographic post cards; 2 typed letters 5 autograph letters signed from Swayne to Seton-Karr 34 pages total; a few short pencil annotations by Seton-Karr; 4 pencil drawings; some printed ephemera. Seton-Karr has also annotated the title page adding "with Mr H. W. Seton-Karr" beneath the title. Major Harald G.C. Swayne 1860-1940 soldier and sportsman was author of Seventeen Trips through Somaliland 1895; he also served in Burma and Aden and later in Flanders during the first world war. Seton-Karr 1859-1938 was born in India educated at Eton Oriel and Sandhurst serving for a time as an officer at Gibraltar and in Egypt. He travelled extensively for sport in Africa Egypt and Somaliland Norway Alaska and in India and Central Asia. His books incuded two volumes on Alaska and British Columbia and Ten Years' Wild Sports in Foreign Lands 1889. One of the items of ephemera added later is a publicity piece on Seton-Karr noting 19 journeys to Africa 25 expeditions to Asia and 20 trips to Arctic Europe and America. Swayne and Seton-Karr "traveled from Moscow across the Urals and into the mountainous regions of Mongolia and the Altai Shan. Near the Chagan-Burgaza Pass Ovis ammon were bagged. In the Laki Valley ibex and more Ovis ammon were collected. There are excellent descriptions of terrrain throughout. The author used Elim Demidoff's After Wild Sheep in the Altai and Mongolia as a guide" - Czech. A rich and fascinating extra-illustrated record of Siberian travel by one of the participants. Milnor served for a number of years as secretary of the Schuylkill Fishing Company America's oldest angling group founded in 1732 - indeed it claims to be the world's oldest social organization - and was a member of the Gloucester Fox Hunting Club the first organized hunt club in America founded across the river in New Jersey in 1766. He was also a member of Congress 1812-1820 and in 1829 was elected Mayor of Philadelphia. His well written accounts of both organizations are full of lively anecdotes specific incidents and reports of various methods of hunting and fishing not to mention a number of illustrious and interesting individuals Attractive copy of this key work in American sporting history.
