Of all the books first printed by The Derrydale Press perhaps none is so universally beloved as Gordon Grand's The Silver Horn. A leading contender for The Great American Sporting Novel it is not a novel at all but rather a collection of stories written by a sportsman for his own amusement. The first edition was illustrated with six full-page drawings of which we offer five--what became of the other one is not known. Done on a large scale they were considerably reduced in the book and are far more attractive in the larger original format. They consist of: "Mr. Doleful goes on to win" ".and they killed the fox" "The Rector views the fox" "Dr. Robertson of Heddingham" and a fine cock-fighting scene "The pit in Mr. Keener's barn". "One of the most important books published by Connett." -- Siegel This is the large paper edition of this work. The regular trade edition was published at the same time by Windward House a sporting press started by Connett in 1933. Both editions used Barber's vignette on the the title page. From this drawing it appears that Connett liked the artist's Windward design and used in it the Derrydale edition: in the margin of the drawing Connett has pencilled "reduce 1/4 inch" and the drawing was photographically reduced to the smaller dimension for the large paper copies. A simplified version of the design was used on the Derrydale edition spine. One of the rarest and most desirable productions of the Derrydale Press and by virtue of the drawing a unique copy. Laid in is AN AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY GORDON GRAND on his Millbrook NY letterhead dated Nov. 27 1934 to Harry Worcester Smith: "Thank you for sending me a copy of your letter to Connett. Dr. Somerville was really very generous about the book and understanding about the U.S.A. reflecting her visit. The Country Life people produced a thoroughly satisfying edition. They sent me a copy which someone promptly walked off with. I am asking Connett if he could not write over and procure half a dozen copies and I will ask him to send you on one with my compliments". This refers to the first English edition of "The Silver Horn" 1934 for which Somerville wrote a laudatory introduction. Grand adds a postscript: "If sometime after Dec. 10th you would care to send Col. Walter Faber's "Wit and Wisdom of the Shires" and Frederick Watson's "Robert Smith Surtees a Critical Study" on to me at Llewellyn Park West Orange N.J. c/o Mrs. James B. Dill I would very much like to read them and will get them back to you promptly. I meet so many disappointments in sporting books that I don't read as many as I should but when someone like yourself or Charles Lanier tell me that a book is worth the reading I long to get my teeth into it." Newark NJ 1855. 1 vols. 1 page with conjugate blank 7-3/4 x 5 inches with small embossed stamp "Garsons" at top probably the paper-maker. Old folds else fine. 1 vols. 1 page with conjugate blank 7-3/4 x 5 inches with small embossed stamp "Garsons" at top probably the paper-maker. Fine "Frank Forester" Autograph Letter. The letter reads in part: "I have succeeded in procuring a copy of the article on Webster with which you were pleased and herewith enclose it to you. I hope the article on the Spirit and its Editor came safely to hand and gave satisfaction." It is almost certain that "Mr. Hooper" is Johnson J. Hooper compiler of Dog And Gun; A Few Loose Chapters on Shooting. 1856 which is dedicated to Herbert and contains two sporting articles by him. "The Spirit" is certainly The Spirit of the Times to which Herbert contributed articles and letters 1839-52 its Editor being William T. Porter who also edited the American Turf Register and its successor publication 1840-55. We have not been able to trace either of the articles Herbert mentions in his letter. He is known to have contributed to a number of periodicals and newspapers of which no copies with his contributions survive and himself edited The Era a weekly paper around 1850 of which no copies survive at all. It is likely that his articles on Webster and Porter appeared in one of these giving this letter historical importance in identifying two of "Frank Forester's" lost works. UNIQUE AND IMPORTANT. The Massachusetts Gazetteer of 1890 said of the town: "Merrimac is a thrifty and attractive manufacturing town situated on the north bank of the Merrimack River. The principle business is carriage making in the different departments of which in numerous shops some 500 men are engaged." The mid 1800s marked the peak of Merrimac's carriage-making and by 1888 there were nineteen carriage-making shops as well as other companies related to the carriage-making industry. Between 1881 and 1889 Merrimac's carriage factories were making 1500 quality carriages per year. Companies such as J.B. Judkins and Company Loud Brothers and H.G. & H.W.
