First separate edition reprinted from Izaak Walton League Monthly. Frontispiece photographic portrait of the author holding his hat his rod and his bonefish illustrated by Bessie Bethal Crank. vi 18 pp. 1 vols. 12mo. RARE ZANE GREY PAMPHLET. Privately printed Christmas greeting from Zane Grey recounting how he and his brother came to fish at Long Key and many of the characters he encountered. The book was issued in a very small edition reprinting an article first published in the Izaak Walton League Monthly. William Dilg was a friend and correspondent of Zane Grey who founded the Izaak Walton League in 1922 as a conservation and angling group. Within the space of four years and with the support of Zane Grey Emerson Hough Stewart Edward White and other writers Dilg had built it into an influential nationwide organization with more than 200000 members and some 2500 local chapters. In 1926 DIlg was ousted as president of the league amid some controversy. The Forest and Stream issue for June 1926 reports on the controversy and bears the headline "ZANE GREY Declares for WILL H. DILG" and includes an open letter from Grey stating that he had resigned from the League and giving his reasons for a call to resist the commercial interests that displaced Dilg who served as League president and as editor of the monthly Magazine. A four-page Typed Letter signed Bill" from Dilg to Zane Grey dated 2 August 1926 restates Dilg's complaint about the actions of the "Junta" and proposes a plan for action by Grey in support of Dilg and the interests of the league's members. The organization Dilg founded still exists and pursues conservation initiatives. The Bonefish Brigade is RARE and the present copy is inscribed by the editor who founded the Izaak Walton League and commissioned the piece with a notable letter pleading for Grey's support. Sellersville Pa 1941. 2 pp. single-spaced approx. 750 words signed in ink at foot of second page. 4to. Old folds. Fine mailing envelope with some soiling and staining. 2 pp. single-spaced approx. 750 words signed in ink at foot of second page. 4to. Hidy on Leisenring the Brodheads 'Purists' and the Catskills. Informative and chatty letter to Baird Foster future rod-maker and member of the Anglers' Club of New York on angling topics including much about James E. Leisenring 1878-1951 "getting to see how familiarity with a stream solves many problems which are otherwise impossible" plans for fishing the Brodheads and more. Hidy mentions sending a few Leisenring flies "for your scrutiny and pleasure" but these were evidently used or studied and are not present. Together Leisenring and Hidy wrote a twentieth-century American angling classic The Art of Tying the Wet Fly 1941. In a 1960 reminiscence of Leisenring and wet-fly fishing Hidy wrote "Trout fisherman James Leisenring's life was a bachelor's odyssey that took him from his Delaware Valley home to the more primitive waters tumbling out of the Rockies and the Sierra. East and West anglers remember him fondly: a tall bronzed man with piercing brown eyes sensitive to all that was happening in and along a stream." Susio Giovanni Battista
I tre libri di Messer Giovan Battista Susio della ingiustitia del duello et di coloro che lo permettono. Con la tavola delle cose piu notabili
Vinegia: Apresso G. Giolito de Ferrari et Fratelli 1555. First edition. Large woodcut vignette publisher's device; head- and tail-pieces numerous large woodcut initial capital letters. Text printed in italic. 182 18 pp. 4to. Contemporary vellum manuscript title lettered along spine. Binding somewhat soiled and worn title-page page a bit dusty first four leaves show a mild early dampstaining at lower outer corners contemporary owner's inscription to ffep; otherwise overall a lovely unsophisticated large-margined copy in its 16th-century binding. First edition. Large woodcut vignette publisher's device; head- and tail-pieces numerous large woodcut initial capital letters. Text printed in italic. 182 18 pp. 4to. Susio's Rare Attack on Duelling: One Copy in the Last 30 Years. An important and beautifully printed attack on the practice of duelling which has become quite rare on the market whereas the second edition of 1558 shows up with some frequency. Thimm who had never seen a copy himself refers to one in "Captain Hutton's Collection" and calls for a folding plate -- in obvious error for among the 10 copies located by OCLC in institutions not one contains any plates; nor did the one dampstained copy which appeared at auction in 1996 and which was mistakenly presumed to be incomplete. Susio 1519-1583 Renaissance man of letters eminent physician humanist and poet dedicates his book to Henry II King of France who passed an ordinance against duelling. The subject of duelling and its legal ethical and social implications was a hot one in the latter half of 16th century Italy and Susio's work is among the most important of several to appear in his day Mutio il Duello 1550; Attendolo il Duello 1560; Pigna Il Duello 1560; Gallese Contra l' uso del duello 1565; et al.; and the Venetian house of the Giolito family seems to have printed many of them including this. A very desirable copy of a rare and important book on the subject. Thimm p. 280 mistakenly calling for frontispiece; Levi & Geli not in Adams; not in Brunet Apresso G. Giolito de Ferrari, et Fratelli unknown

Each plate is archivally matted; the paintings measure 12 x 9-12 inches and are docketed and captioned in pencil in the lower margins. The watercolors are handsomely and uniformly matted in fine French mats; the proofs in a more simple uniform matting; a few of the watercolors show faint foxing but both sets are clean bright and highly attractive. Custom half morocco slipcase and cloth chemise. From an edition of 250 signed sets. Ordeman notes that "it is rare that one finds a complete set today". 1 vols. Image size of the prints is approximately 10 x 8 inches the plate measuring 13 x 9-1/2 inches with additional margins. Each plate is archivally matted; the paintings measure 12 x 9-12 inches and are docketed and captioned in pencil in the lower margins. Boyer's Originals. An extremely handsome and decorative set of American sporting notables. The six portraits each set in an appropriate background are of: SAMUEL MORRIS ESQ. Foxhunter first president of the Gloucester Foxhunting Club America's oldest; COL. WILLIAM RANSOM JOHNSON "Napoleon of the Turf"; COL. GEORGE WASHINGTON Foxhunter; COMMODORE JOHN COX STEVENS Yachtsman owner of the "America" and a founder of the New York Yacht Club; THADDEUS NORRIS ESQ. Angler author of The American Angler's Book who did much to elevate and advance the art of fly fishing; HENRY WILLIAM HERBERT ESQ. "Frank Forester" the father of American sporting literature. Boyer's watercolors done in larger size were reduced to edition dimensions of approximately 10 x 8 inches. The proof prints before letters have been reworked by Boyer who has signed each one and show a depth and richness of modelling that the published edition for all its beauty does not. This set was one of the finest productions of The Derrydale Press Sporting Print Series. We believe the set of proofs to be unique and the original paintings are of course unquestionably so. Both have survived in prime condition to delight the collector and historian of the American sporting scene. A UNIQUE TREASURE OF AMERICAN SPORTING ART. Edgar Britt up. Trained by Capt. Cecil Boyd Rochfort. Hand colored aquatint signed in the plate Stainforth. A choice group of the sporting prints commissioned by William Woodward owner of the Belair Stables. "Brown Betty" by T.P. Earl 1874-1947 is previously unrecorded and never seen by Ordeman whose 2005 book collected prior knowledge on the prints. One other print by British artist T.P. Earl Flares is noted by Ordeman date unknown but in personal communication he reports that his information comes at second hand. and has never seen "Brown Betty". The print is however in the collection of the Belair Mansion Museum established after Woodward's death at his Maryland residence. Brown Betty won the 1933 1000 Guineas race and the painting by T.P. Earl that Woodward commissioned is dated 1933 in the plate. The paper and production of this color print differ from the aquatint horse portraits commissioned from Connett and Frank Lowe. Given the date of the portrait we conjecture that Woodward commissioned the print in London and thus it may predate and be the point of origin for the series of prints commissioned from Connett. In recent conversation Ordeman advanced a similar hypothesis. The Megargee print "Marguerite" with her colt Gallant Fox is from the collection of Derrydale Press publisher Eugene V. Connett 3rd. Rare and important. Ordeman 2005 pp. 96-98; Mitchell British Equestrian Artists: "Stainforth's detail and accuracy in likeness were very fine and very natural. He avoided the pitfalls of flatness and photographic stiffness so often found in this type of work." Provenance: descendant of the Loew family see note at "Marguerite" privately printed at the Derrydale Press, etc. unknown

Trout fishing. Henry Sandham. 4. Fly-fishing for Black Bass. S.F. Denton. 5. Hunting Antelope i.e. Prong-horn. Frederic Remington. 6. Catching a Tarpon. Fred. S. Cozzens. 7. Mallard shooting. S.F. Denton. 8. Catching a Mascalonge. Frank H.Taylor. 9. A Wild Turkey hunt. R.J. Zogbaum. 10. Sailing for Bluefish. Fred S. Cozzens. 11. Hunting the Virginia Deer. A.B. Frost. 12. A day with the Prairie Chickens. R.F. Zogbaum. 13. A hunt above the timber-line Big-horn. Edward Knobel. 14. Canada Goose shooting. Frederic Remington. 15. Stalking the Wapiti. Henry Sandham. The two plates by Frederic Remington 'Hunting Antelope' Hassrick & Webster 434 and 'Goose Shooting' Hassrick & Webster 435 are also listed by Peggy and Harold Samuels Remington The Complete Prints New York 1990 pp.152-3 with the comment that they are the first and second Remington prints to appear in color. They were preceded only by a series of four monochrome photogravures for John Muir's Picturesque California 1888 and two other individual prints both black and white. Arthur Burdett Frost is now perhaps best known for his sporting pictures and prints but his lack of interest in deer-hunting meant that he rarely pictured shooting scenes that featured anything other than small game. His image 'Hunting the Deer' is recorded and illustrated in Henry M. Reed's The A.B. Frost Book Charleston 1993 pp.101 104-5 but the author was apparently unaware that it was issued as part of the present work which is not included in the extensive appendix of books illustrated by Frost. The present work includes six angling plates three of fly-fishing four plates of game-bird hunting and five of hunting larger game. Each of the fifteen subjects is first described in general terms on a single leaf of text followed by a second leaf giving a first-hand account of catching or shooting the subject followed by a chromolithograph illustrating the first-hand account. According to Gould's preface the plates are all from water-colours especially commissioned for the work which were subjected to the critical scrutiny of a group of anglers/sportsmen who judged them for technical accuracy. Phillips p. 141; Wetzel p. 146; Sherwin sale 1946 lot 238; Bruns G120; Heller 1:502; Bennett p.48; Tyler Prints of the West pp.127 & 174; not in Reese Stamped with a National Character Bradlee Whidden unknown
