I have had an opportunity of learning the goodness of your breed of hounds & if you should dispose of them I beg to have the Refusal. If likewise Sir Rowland you should at the same time chuse to part with your Huntsman and &Whipper In if you could recommend them I would be glad of them with the hounds. ." With Sir Rowland's retained copy of his non-commital reply in part: "I shall most certainly dispose of them and should they not stay in my county I will most certainly acquaint your Lordship with it so that you may have my Refusall ." bottom portion of leaf torn away with loss to signature. One of the rarest of early American illustrated sporting books exceedingly rare in the original wrappers. As of the Van Winkle Sale only two copies were known with the wrappers; and Ernest Gee in his Introduction to the Derrydale facsimile of 1929 stated that he was able to trace only three copies adding: "It may be described as the most profusely illustrated early sporting book published in America as it contains twenty superb woodcuts delineating the various Field Sports practised at that time." The plates accompanied by a leaf of letterpress with often humorous comments by the anonymous author include: Trout FishingWoodcock Shooting Grouse Shooting Moose Hunting Duck Shooting Salmon Fishing Grouse Shooting Bass Fishing Bison Hunting etc. The Portfolio first appeared in Gleason's Pictorial in 1853-54 and is among the rarest of American sporting desiderata. The publication price was 25 cents see upper right on the front cover. NUC locates 6 copies few presumably with wrappers. During the firm's history we have had only two other copies complete in wrappers and two copies lacking most or all of the wrappers. Provenance: Don Frazier. "Dean Wolstenholme Snr became an artist in middle life after losing his then not inconsiderable wealth in a property deal which went wrong. Before moving to London in about 1800 he had lived in Herfordshire and Essex pursuing a happy life devoted to foxhunting and coursing painting a little for his own pleasure. In London he had to paint in earnest bringing to the city memories of his earlier years. He exhibited a painting of coursing at the Royal Academy in 1803; fox hunting in 1804. and so on until shortly before his death in 1837. A large number of his hunting coursing and shooting pictures were engraved. His son Charles Dean Wolstenholme Jnr. 1793-1883 also became an animal painter of note. Both father and son populated their landscapes with horses and horsemen rather than painting commissioned equestrian portraits; and the pleasure of their work is their skill in depicting the English Home Counties countryside."
