‎Barnum Phineas Taylor‎

‎Autograph Letter signed "P.T. Barnum" to Major James Pond‎

‎Victoria Hotel Southport July 2d/'82. 2 pages pen and ink. 1 vols. 8vo. Old folds light browning at margins. 2 pages pen and ink. 1 vols. 8vo. Barnum on His Reciepts from the Barnum & Bailey Circus. Barnum writes to his lecture manager Major James Pond declining an invitation to lecture in England and revealing his gross receipts from his Barnum & Bailey's show. Reading in part "Thanks for your offer for me to lecture . the receipts of our big show were in first 6 days $74051.00 - the whole ten days over $108000 and on one day Saturday June 17 $15742.15. This seems incredible - but is the honest truth. We think that "Jumbo" an African elephant recently purchased from the London zoo adds £800 - or $4000 daily to our receipts - certainly for 8 months or 36 weeks he will add to our receipts $15000 per week or $540000! - £109000 sterling. Is it any wonder that we decline an offer of £100 per day & all expenses for the 75 or 80 winter days that we can't exhibit in America" Barnum closes with a postscript "Ask Hoffman if he can tell me how to get the Mexican dwarf girl on resonable terms for Ringling show next summer .". Major James Burton Pond 1838-1903 was a lecture promoter who in addition to Barnum represented Samuel Clemens Winston Churchill and Henry Stanley. unknown‎

‎A Set of Eight China Dinner Plates with Black and White Wildfowl Designs by Lynn Bogue Hunt with His Explanatory Legends on the Back‎

‎n.p. 1940. 1 vols. 10-1/2 inches in diameter. These plates have been used to dine from--there are minute scratches and rubbing here and there and a small chip to the underside of one or two rims--but they are fine overall and ideal for display. Lynn Bogue Hunt. 1 vols. 10-1/2 inches in diameter. Wildfowl China Plates by Lynn Bogue Hunt. On November 3 1943 Lynn Bogue Hunt wrote to Eugene V. Connett founder proprietor and in 1942 liquidator of The Derrydale Press: ".I have been decorating highball glasses plates and doing porcelains for a couple of years and with considerable success on a royalty basis". Looking at these exceptionally attractive and interesting plates it is easy to see why. Hunt's ducks pheasant quail and other species are vigorously depicted in flight with Hunt's caption and signature included on the front surface. On the back of each plate is shown a pair of the subject birds and a lengthy description about 125 words of their characteristics and habits lettered and signed by Hunt. Despite numerous attempts by various practitioners sporting art does not always translate well to other media but with these plates Hunt has successfully combined form and function with elegance and style. ‎Nimrod‎

‎Master Charles BROWN "Young Nimrod" "Champion wing and rifle shot of the world"‎

‎1883. An original 'front-of-house' board visible area: 30.5 x 22.5 inches with seven cabinet-sized albumen print photographs visible area: 5 x 3.5 inches. 1 vols. Frame size 34 x 26. Oak frame over matted board with seven openings for photographs. Photos somewhat faded the card mat soiled. An original 'front-of-house' board visible area: 30.5 x 22.5 inches with seven cabinet-sized albumen print photographs visible area: 5 x 3.5 inches. 1 vols. Frame size 34 x 26. A unique reminder of an extraordinary sporting prodigy. An original 'front-of-house' board with calligraphic manuscript text in red and black ink 'Mastr. C Brown / "Young Nimrod" / Champion Wing And / Rifle Shot of the World / as he appeared before / H.R.H. the /Prince of Wales / Prince Christian / and / various Members / of the / Royal Family.' the board acting as a custom matt for seven cabinet-sized albumen print photographs of Master Brown in uniform or in shooting kit all with gun in hand two with an accompanying gundog. It is not possible to be certain but this 'board' looks like it was used in the lobby of a venue where 'Young Nimrod' was appearing possibly doubling as the 'card' which was used to identify his 'act' as he performed on stage. In any case it is a remarkable survivor from the age of P T Barnum Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley and a reminder of a time when the borders between sport theatre and spectacle were blurred to the delight of appreciative audiences in the UK Europe and the US. In addition to showing great natural talent Charles Brown also had the advantage of being the son Thomas Brown the proprietor of the South London Shooting Ground at Nunhead. By the time he was eight 'Youing Nimrod' was already shooting to a very high standard see below for some of his most memorable scores. The Prince of Wales a keen shot was an occasional visitor to Nunhead and on the 3rd April 1882 at the Royal Aquarium Westminster Master C. Brown gave an exhibition of glass ball shooting before the Prince and his guests: this is probably the occasion referred to on the present board. A contemporary account of 'Young Nimrod is given by Basil Tozer: "Last but not least comes Master Charles Brown of Nunhead alias "Young Nimrod" a boy not yet in his teens but who may fairly be termed the juvenile champion wing-shot of the world. Young Nimrod began shooting at the early age of seven and has from the time of his first essay made wonderful progress in the art. His name is well known in connection with shooting and he is frequently a topic of conversation at pigeon shooting reunions. The guns employed are of small caliber i.e. double and single 20 24 and 28 bores thereby making his performances all the more creditable. He was greatly eulogised upon his skill by H.R.H. the Prince of Wales before whom he gave an exhibition in glass ball shooting some years ago. Annexed are some of Young Nimrod's best scores: First match at pigeons shot at Nunhead on December 18th 1882. To kill 34 blue rocks i.e.rock-doves out of 50 with a 28-bore gun at 15 yards rise. A strong wind favoured the birds rendering the task an extremely difficult one. Second match shot at Dawlish South Devon on the 28th December following. To accomplish the same feat under similar conditions. It may here be well to remind the reader that Young Nimrod was at this time but eight years of age. His next performance worthy of note took place on January 25th 1883. This was an attempt to shoot 70 pigeions out of 100 at 18 yards rise and 80 fall using his 28-bore Greener . This he achieved in splendid style. He again backed himself to reapeat the same at the Union Club Hendon on the 2nd April 1883 and actually grassed 75 of Hammond's blue rocks out of the century 61 of which were killed with the first barrel. These figures speak for themselves and the boy's unerring aim added to his cool calm demeanour whilst shooting would do credit to any veteran sportsman - not to mention a child of nine. His expertness with the rifle is equally laudable. Young Nimrod's finest performance took place at Nunhead on 25 May 1885 when he broke 1047 glass balls in one hour the first hundred being disposed of in six minutes fifty seconds. The guns employed were two 24-bores and a 20-bore. In February 1883 he undertook to shoot 420 double rises out of 600 at the Agricutural Hall on three consecutive days. This he accomplished by destroying 513 out of the 600 in double shots. In the same year he scored 88 " kills" out of 100 clay pigeons. On the 2nd March 1884 Master Brown was tasked by his father to pierce 60 wooden balls out of 100 with a .380-bore rifle standing at ten yards rise the balls were thrown up by hand in front of him. Total. 83 out 100" Basil TOZER. Practical Hints on Shooting. London: 1887 pp. 358-360 & p.377 Litt: J.H. JONES "Young Nimrod." Being a brief sketch of the life of C. Brown. London: 1884. unknown‎

‎Hunting in the Dakotas. Collection of 35 photographs of outdoor scenes including views of hunters and their game bag; goose hunting in dugout blinds in stubble of a harvested field; hunting dogs; and views of landscapes and farms‎

‎Twin Lakes No. Dakota 1890. 35 mounted albumen photographs 15 captioned in pencil. 5 x 7 inches on gilt-edged card mounts 8 x 10 inches. Generally very good ten photographs quite faded. Laid into a quarter blue morocco and cloth dropbox. 35 mounted albumen photographs 15 captioned in pencil. 5 x 7 inches on gilt-edged card mounts 8 x 10 inches. Outstanding group of photographs documenting bird hunting in the Twin Lakes area of north central North Dakota northeast of Bismarck in the late nineteenth century. Scenes include several of the hunters and their arrayed bag of geese ducks grouse and snipe; turf houses and barns; a wooden farmhouse on the prairie; the hunters' tent camp and wagons; and the narrow stretch of ground between the Twin Lakes. One of the most interesting views shows two hunters standing in dugout pits in the stubble of a harvested field with a long line of decoys behind them; this photograph is the only one to identify the hunters by name Cummings on the left and Dr. Booth on the right; a second uncaptioned photograph shows the two men from a different angle with one of the dogs. The "Lunch" photograph shows a circle of four men and their dog seated in the high grass eating one hunter taking a pull at a small dark bottle beside their wagon and tethered horses. Other captions note: "1 afternoon bag 3 men 88 geese 4 varieties"; "Our dogs 4 pointers 1 setter"; "Duck slue in No. Dakota"; "Mixed bag ducks geese snipe plover"; four hunters and their dog with their bag of "Sharp tail grouse ducks and snipe"; "Rex on point"; the wagon carrying the party of six titled "grouse hunting"; and other untitled photographs of the same group of men. Several of the wide view photographs are reminiscent of the sporting illustrations of A.B. Frost. A few of the photographs are quite faded but even in these the scenes can still be discerned. A substantial group of images of sporting life from Dakota frontier. unknown‎

Original full pale green Japanese silk printed label on upper cover endpapers of Indonesian handmade bamboo paper together with bamboo paper folder containing colophon information two photographs and a letter from Garrison. The Deluxe Edition One of 36 Copies. The Deluxe Edition of this classic book originally published in 1977 and subsequently revised and updated. Edmund Everett Garrison 1893-1975 was one of the great fly-rod makers probably the greatest. His rods are collector's items and $15000 is not an unusual price to pay for one. Garrison trained as an engineer worked full time for most of his adult life in a structural engineering firm and only produced his meticulously hand-crafted rods evenings and weekends; his output was thus comparatively small but each rod that left his hand was a masterpiece. He brought to an old art a unique technological competence which made for outstanding performance but it remained an art. Nearly twenty thousand copies of this book have been sold in previous trade editions; this is one of only 36 Deluxe copies the edition quickly sold out and contains two glossy photographs one of Garrison and family members in which he holds one of his rods the other of Carmichael working on a rod of his own and an ALS of Garrison. A SPLENDID AND HIGHLY DESIRABLE VOLUME. Meadow Run Press unknown‎

‎West Leonard‎

‎Collection of Four Autograph Letters Signed "Leonard West" to R.B. Marston editor of the Fishing Gazette August to December 1912 concerning printing and publishing The Natural Trout Fly and Its Imitation and preparation of the deluxe copies‎

‎Ravenhead St. Helens England: Published by the Author 1912. Pen and ink on paper. 15 pp. total. 1 vols. 12mo. Green buckram portfolio. Letters generally fine. Book: original olive cloth a trifle worn spine faded else fine. Pen and ink on paper. 15 pp. total. 1 vols. 12mo. West to Marston on producing and selling The Natural Trout Fly. Fascinating clutch of letters from Leonard West discussing the production and early sales of The Natural Trout Fly and Its Imitation now recognized as one of the classic works of pre-war English angling literature with information on the deluxe edition containing hand-tied flies. The recipient R.B. Marston author of Walton and the Earlier Angler Authors and the 1901 Supplement to the Bibliotheca Piscatoria was the influential editor of the Fishing Gazette for many years. - The first letter 3 pp. is dated 14 August 1912 and begins "Herewith I have the pleasure in enclosing review copy of my book 'The Natural Trout Fly & Its Imitation' & hope you will find the volume worthy of a favorable review . I think the printers deserve a good word for the way they have turned out the plates ." Docketed with a note in Marston's hand "See my note in FG Aug. 24 1912 RBM." - The second letter dated 23 August thanks Marston for a "very handsome" Note in the Fishing Gazette see clipping inserted in the book and discusses other early notices: "The 'Scotsman' gives me a good word shot but quite O.K. The Sporting & Dramatic 'have given instructions for it to be well reviewed & request permission to reproduce one of the plates' That for an outsider seems going it pretty strong - does it not . I have unloaded 100 up to now & sent for more." West also details progress on the edition de luxe "My leisure at present is occupied in dressing flies & trying to get others up to concert pitch . I have booked 19 E. de luxe" - The third letter 2 pp. dated 21 October notes that West is sending Marston "the edition de luxe of my book & hope you will like the get up & also the flies therein. The demand has been much greater than the supply so there will be little difficulty in disposing of a copy if desired at a premium. Other copies should all be sent out in the next fortnight . The ordinary edition is quietly going out all the time & hosts of appreciative letters are received not only from English customers but from France & America also." Docketed see F.G. note Oct. 26/12. - the fourth letter 4 pp. dated 12 December 1912 discusses sales of the book: "Sales are moving all the time lowest number sent off in any week being 10 & the average being 31.76 per week. I do no know if a "proper" publisher would consider this satisfactory but possibly he might not talk to his customers in the blunt way I do to some of mine!" West also discusses two flies Orange Partridge and Snipe & Purple: "but what is a snipe & purple It is over thirty years since old Joe Moses a well known North country catcher of fish shewed me how to make it . but not dressed as now sold but thusly details & sketch follow keep it thin both in body thorax & legs." West adds a note at the top "P.S. What about the Hon. D. Fearing - his copy - of the Ed. de luxe" With a copy of the printed book Marston's Occasional Note "Send Your Money!" from the Fishing Gazette for 24 August 1912 clipped and tipped in to front pastedown. Choice group of letters with substantial content and an important association. Published by the Author unknown‎

‎Grypeswaldiae: Ant. Ferdin. Roese 1792. Second edition first ed. 1738. iv 723 pp. 8vo. Quarter calf and boards spine laid down. Library bookplate with release. Second edition first ed. 1738. iv 723 pp. 8vo. Peter Artedi or Petrus Arctaedius February 22 1705 - September 27 1735 was a Swedish naturalist and is known as the "father of Ichthyology." Artedi was born in the province of Ã…ngermanland. Intending to become a clergyman he went in 1724 to study theology at Uppsala University but he turned his attention to medicine and natural history especially fishes. In 1728 his countryman Carolus Linnaeus arrived in Uppsala and a lasting friendship was formed between the two. In 1732 both left Uppsala Artedi for England and Linnaeus for Lappland; before parting they reciprocally bequeathed to each other their manuscripts and books in the event of death. Artedi accidentally drowned at Amsterdam where he was engaged in cataloguing the collections of Albertus Seba a wealthy Dutchman who had formed what was perhaps the richest museum of his time. According to agreement his manuscripts came into the hands of Linnaeus and his Bibliotheca Ichthyologica and Philosophia Ichthyologica together with a life of the author were published at Leiden in 1738. On his grave an epitaph by George Shaw is engraved: Here lies poor Artedi in foreign land pyx'd Not a man nor a fish but something betwixt Not a man for his life among fishes he past Not a fish for he perished by water at last. Two large photos show mounted groups of players mallets raised; the third shows an attendant holding the bridle of a pony. Of four smaller photos one shows a man in gaucho outfit standing with ponies one shows another man holding a pony and two show several ponies together in one case feeding from a hay rack. 1 vols. Three photos approximately 6-1/2 x 9 inches; four approximately 3 x 4 inches. Rare Argentine Polo Photographs Ca. 1883. A very early and possibly unique set of polo photographs dating from the game's earliest days in Argentina a country subsequently famous for its superb record in International competitions. Invented in Persia the game was revived in India in 1863 and was brought to England by British officers in 1869. A number of Englishmen many of them younger sons of British nobility emigrated to Argentina in the latter decades of the century and around 1883 they introduced polo first played around Buenos Aires which quickly spread and became a national sport. Some of the faces in the photos offered here have a distinctly English appearance and it is not too fanciful to assume that these may indeed be some of the founders of the Argentine game. It is also possible that these are the first photographs taken of polo in Argentina. AN HISTORIC SET OF PHOTOGRAPHS. Dale Polo at Home and Abroad p. 182 et seq unknown‎
