‎TWELFTH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE YOUNG WOMEN'S HEBREW ASSOCIATION‎

‎Original Wraps. 12mo. 94, [7] pages. 17 cm. Only edition. With 7 leaves of plates: depicting the Young Women's Hebrew Association building, facilities, and courses. Detailed twelfth annual report of the YWHA. “As a communal agency run entirely by and for women, the YWHA provided an important political arena for Jewish women in the early part of the twentieth century. As a pioneering Jewish institution combining social and religious services, the YWHA became one of the principal sources of the Jewish community center movement. … In the new building of 1914, the auditorium doubled as the synagogue, and services were conducted every Friday night, Saturday morning, and on Jewish holidays. The other major Jewish aspect of the YWHA was its curriculum consisting of classes in Hebrew, Bible study, and Jewish history. This was coordinated with an experimental Hebrew school for girls conducted at the YWHA by the Bureau of Jewish Education (of the New York City Kehilla) . Of course, the YWHA offered far more than religious services and Hebrew classes. In 1917, a few years after the completion of its new eight-story facility on 110th Street overlooking Central Park, the New York YWHA was described as 'the only large institution of its kind in America. ' The description of the modern social center continued: 'Besides being a most comfortable home for one hundred and seventy girls, the building is also a true center for the communal interests of the neighborhood; it houses a Commercial School, a Hebrew School, Trade Classes in Dressmaking, Millinery, Domestic Science, classes in Hebrew, Bible Study, Jewish History, Art, English to Foreigners, Advanced English, French, Spanish, and Nursing. There is a completely equipped modern gymnasium and swimming pool. ” - Jewish Women's Archive. Subjects: Jews - New York (State) - New York. Young Women's Hebrew Association (New York, N. Y. ) - Annual Reports. OCLC lists 1 copy (NYPL) . Wraps previously rebacked, bumped and soiled wraps, internally clean and fresh. Good + condition. Rare. (WOMEN-1-24)‎

‎(PHOTO TRADING CARD, PROBABLY THE FIRST OF A JEWISH WOMEN'S TEAM) TORONTO Y.W.H.A. LADIES’ BASKETBALL TEAM, WINNERS OF THE GRIFF CLARK TROPHY.‎

‎Trading card, Very Small (slightly less than 2”x1”) . “Dominion Athletic Stars” Sports Card (Card Nr 14) from a “series of 120 pictures of Canadian athletes” which were given away in Dominion Chocolate Bars in the mid-1920s. This card features a photo on the front of the champion “Toronto Y. W. H. A. Basketball Team, ” featuring 8 female team members in their YWHA jerseys, plus their 2 coaches. The Canadian Jewish Review of June 8, 1923, reported that “at the Primrose Club last Tuesday, the Y. M. And Y. W. H. A. Of Toronto celebrated their victories in sports by tendering a banquet to the winning teams and presenting the cups and trophies to the successful players. The best feature of the evening was the presentation of the Griff Clark Trophy to the Y. W. H. A. Basket ball team, champions of the city. ” Text on reverse. Quite probably the only explicitly Jewish women’s sports team featured on a mass-market trading card in the 1920s, and probably the first ever. Light wear, photo is clear, Good Condition. ‎BEETON Mrs.‎

‎Mrs. Beeton's All About Cookery. New Edition.‎

‎8vo., with coloured frontispiece, 11 coloured plates and 48 plates in monochrome, frontispiece remargined at foot, title lightly spotted, some occasional mild spotting to text; original decorative brown cloth blocked in gilt and black, gilt back, covers mildly age-marked, two corners mildly bruised, very neatly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, a very good, firm copy. With advertisement front endpapers in sepia and 11pp of similar advertisements at end. 'All About Cookery' (first issued under this title in 1871) is a derivative of Isabella Beeton's final work 'The Dictionary of Cookery'. The 'Dictionary' was first published in 1865 and designed to full the gap between her classic (but highly-priced) 'Book of Household Management' and the cheaper 'Cookery'. A key feature of the work is the arrangement of its subject matter - recipes, menus, implements and so on - in alphabetical order for easy reference. It is her only work so presented and to our belief the first compilation of its kind. The Edwardian editions are particularly comprehensive in their scope and coverage. See Driver, p.101 and our own bibliography (in progress). Cagle 563 cites the 1903 edition with fewer plates.‎

‎BEETON Mrs. Isabella‎

‎Mrs. Beeton's Every-Day Cookery. New Edition. With Coloured Plates and other Illustrations. [Third Edition thus]. BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY‎

‎8vo., Third Edition thus, with coloured frontispiece, 18 coloured plates and 67 full-page monochrome photographs and illustrations in the text, some very light and inoffensive spotting (mainly marginal); original decorative green cloth elaborately blocked in gilt and black, backstrip blocked in gilt and black, neatly recased, covers a little age-soiled else a very good, bright, clean copy. Complete with front and rear advertisement endpapers, and 10pp advertisements following index. Many of the advertisements are illustrated. Isabella Beeton's final work, the 'Dictionary of Every-Day Cookery' was first published in 1865 and is second in importance only to 'Household Management'. Following her death in the same year, her husband's publishing house of S.O. Beeton was acquired by Ward Lock & Tyler [subsequently Ward Lock] who naturally set about reissuing all the 'Beeton' cookery titles. The 'Dictionary' was retitled initially the 'Every-Day Cookery and Housekeeping Book' and from 1907 'Mrs. Beeton's Every-Day Cookery'. The present work is, we believe, the third edition with this latter title and the last before Hermann Senn's major revision of 1923. 'Mrs. Beeton's Every-Day Cookery, as it now stands, contains one-third, or 200 pages, more than the previous edition, and is offered at the same price' [Preface]. Although greatly expanded, it is effectively the last edition based on the core text as Isabella herself compiled it. See Driver, p.102 and our own bibliography (in progress).‎

‎RUNDELL] [Mrs. Maria‎

‎New System of Domestic Cookery formed upon Principles of Economy, and adapted to the Use of Private Families. With many new Receipts and embellished with Thirty-Six Engravings.‎

‎16mo., with 16 engravings on 4 plates, and 20 engraved illustrations in the text, text lightly age-soiled throughout; newly bound in brown cloth to style, original cloth label lettered in gilt laid down, a very good, firm copy. From the 1820s until the sixty-sixth edition of 1842 the illustrations generally comprise a frontispiece (usually incorporating the title) and nine engraved plates illustrating cuts, carving and trussing. In the 'new' booksellers' edition of 1846 the frontispiece becomes a kitchen scene. This edition, produced in handy 'pocket' format, appears to be the first with the illustrations rearranged to show carving in the text, and the engravings of cuts and trussing presented in plate form, perhaps for greater clarity. Scarce. This edition not recorded by Cagle, Oxford or Wheaton & Kelly.‎

‎HILL] [F.‎

‎Adam's Luxury and Eve's Cookery; or the Kitchen-Garden Display'd. In Two Parts. To which is added the Physical Virtues of every Herb and Root. [Facsimile re-issue].‎

‎12mo., with decorative head- and tail-pieces; green cloth, gilt back, marbled endpapers, a near fine copy. High-quality facsimile re-issue of the very scarce original edition of 1744. Part I: Shewing the best and most approved Methods of raising and bringing to the greatest Perfection all the Products of the Kitchen-Garden; with a Kalendar shewing the different Products of each Month and the Business proper to be done in it; Part II: Containing a large Collection of Receipts for dressing all Sorts of Kitchen Stuff, so as to afford a great Variety of cheap, healthful; and palatable Dishes. Often cited as a 'vegetarian' treatise. Although the majority of the recipes are vegetarian, some (eg. Hodge-Podge) do use meat stock. Now uncommon in its own right, especially in this condition. Axford, p4; Bitting, p.514; Cagle, 541; Maclean, p.3; Oxford, p.74; Pennell, p.151 (all recording the original edition).‎

‎BRITISH ARMY‎

This attractive and compact edition of a culinary staple is enhanced by an unusual hunting scene as frontispiece; the title-vignette depicts a table of wildfowl and short quotation from Suckling. This must have been one of last the issues of Rundell before the onset of Beeton. This edition not in Cagle. Scarce.‎
