Vernor and Hood [and many others], 1805 Charlotte Mason's important collection was first published in 1773 and Maclean records a further seven eighteenth-century editions. Bitting adds a Dublin imprint of 1778 as a result of which subsequent copies are one edition later than that stated, hence that with 'eighth edition' on title in actually the ninth (Cagle 864) and the present issue (styled 'ninth edition') is actually the tenth (see Cagle pp. 621-3). The present edition retains the introduction to the first edition, the advertisement to the sixth edition, and the appendix on poultry, the dairy, the kitchen and fruit gardens. Scarce in any early edition.

With 3pp publisher's catalogue at end, and two small items of related ephemera loosely inserted. 'This volume meets a want long felt. Vegetables, Fruits, etc, constitute the half of our daily food: the present work is upon the best possible preparation of this half. Cookery-books exist in abundance; but they relate almost exclusively to the preparation of dishes from animal food' (Publisher's advertisement). Smith's delightful compilation was first published in 1866. There was a second issue in 1876 and a third in 1884, so this is probably the fourth edition. The last edition may be that of 1890. Very scarce, especially in this condition.

The work as a whole provides a well-nigh unique account of country life in the eighteenth century; this edition (the sole modern version) includes a lengthy introduction by Burnet. The original frontispiece and illustrated title are reproduced in colour as endpapers. First published in 1982. Arguably the most famous of cookery writers, Mrs Beeton first published her well-known work as monthly supplements in 'The English Women's Domestic Magazine' before its first publication in book form, after which it rapidly became the essential guide to the management of the Victorian home. One of the work's more notable features is its presentation of recipes with clear and precise instructions and all ingredients listed at the head, a style which appears here for the first time and which has remained the industry standard ever since. Now scarce in own right.

'All About Cookery' (first issued under this title in 1871) is a derivative of Isabella Beeton's final work 'The Dictionary of Cookery'. The 'Dictionary' was first published in 1865 and designed to full the gap between her classic (but highly-priced) 'Book of Household Management' and the cheaper 'Cookery'. A key feature of the work is the arrangement of its subject matter - recipes, menus, implements and so on - in alphabetical order for easy reference. It is her only work so presented and to our belief the first compilation of its kind. The Edwardian and Georgian editions are particularly comprehensive in their scope and coverage. However Cagle reveals that Fiona Lucraft provides a detailed account of the author's plagiarism from Raffald and Glasse. Farley's name appears below the portrait from the ninth edition (?) onwards. 4to., First Edition thus, with 8 coloured plates, very numerous monochrome illustrations (a number full-page) in the text and decorative endpapers; yellow cloth, gilt back, a very good, bright, clean copy in dustwrapper. First published in 1970, this is arguably the best of the single-volume compendia of herbs and spices. A well-known mountaineer and member of Hunt's 1953 Everest Expedition, Stobart later developed two other careers - as photographer and cookery writer. This volume was some twenty years in the making. Curiously elusive in this condition.
