Brand, John; Ellis, Henry.
OBSERVATIONS ON POPULAR ANTIQUITIES: Chiefly Illustrating the Origin of Our Vulgar Customs, Ceremonies, and Superstitions. Arranged and Revised, with Additions, by Henry Ellis, Keeper of Manuscripts in the British Museum.
Two volumes. pp. [2], xxvi, 486; xi, 731, [1]. Large 4to. 250 mm. x 300 mm. Modern plain full navy blue leather bindings. Hardbound. Very good+. A wonderful work of history, folklore, nostalgia, and sociology by the Newcastle antiquary, John Brand (1744-1806). The first volume deals with holidays and customs associated with them, such as: New Years Eve; Valentine's Day; customs surrounding many long lost feast days; Easter; pagan mid-Summer rites and dances; Allhallow Even; Yule and Christmastide; Harvests; Etc. The second volume deals with customs and ceremonies relating to life events and common folklore, such as: marriage; death; communion; sailors going tp sea; fairs; fairies; devils and witchcraft; omens; charms; divination; Etc. There are also over 30 pages describing games and sports, including: Archery; Boxing; Foot-Ball; Goff or Golf; Nine Pins; Races; the Ring; Wrestling; etc. & etc. First issued as a small octavo in 1777, Brand continued collecting materials for a revised edition for the rest of his life. He acquired a large amount of additional information from the statistical enquiries in Scotland instigated by Sir John Sinclair. A second edition was planned in 1795, but Brand was apparently overwhelmed by the task of arranging systematically so much material. He did not live to complete the project. Instead the collections were purchased after his death by a bookseller for L600 and were incorporated into this new edition by Sir Henry Ellis (1777-1869). It still stands as an entertaining and essential starting point for studies of English folklore and customs. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W150

Illustrirte Zeitung.
ILLUSTRIRTE ZEITUNG. [Illustrated Weekly Newspaper, April 1, 1909 - August 26, 1909.
pp. 545-1318 + pp. 423-454. Numerous photographic and artistic illustrations, some in color. Some leaves loose, worn, and chipped, but most in very good condition. The 'Leipziger Illustrirte Zeitung' (not to be confused with the 'Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung') was one of Germany's most prestigious weekly news magazines and also one of its most expensive. It was a lavishly printed, large sized, glossy papered publication, quite often with large-sized color reproductions of paintings, watercolors and illustrations, It was about 8 to 10 times more costly than other illustrated magazines of the era. We have here a lively and informative pictorial record that documents the world of the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria, etc.) barely five years before World War One. Great content and illustrations. The advertisements (including some in color) are especially striking. SCARCE. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! WWI 11

Timbs, John.
ENGLISH ECCENTRICS AND ECCENTRICITIES.
pp. xvi, 578, 40 [Publisher's catalogue] + Color Frontis. Illustrated with caricature text drawings. Mildly XLib. 12mo. 180mm. Virtually disbound. This perhaps should best be considered a candidate for rebinding. When John Timbs (1801-1875), English antiquary, was in his sixteenth year, he was apprenticed to a druggist and printer at Dorking. He had early shown literary capacity, and when nineteen began to write for the Monthly Magazine. A year later he became secretary to Sir Richard Phillips, its proprietor, and permanently adopted literature as a profession. He was successively editor of the Mirror of Literature, the Harlequin, the Literary World, and sub-editor of the Illustrated London News. He was also founder and first editor of Year-Book of Science and Art. His published works amounted to more than one hundred and fifty volumes. In 1834 he was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. VERIA BX 2

Dunne, Finley Peter.
MR. DOOLEY'S PHILOSOPHY.
257, + Plus frontis. Text drawings. Decorated title page. Uncut. 8vo. Original full green gold stamped cloth binding, slightly spotted at edges. Finley Peter Dunne (1867-1936) was an American humorist and writer from Chicago. His fictional 'Mr. Dooley' expounded upon political and social issues of the day from his South Side Chicago Irish pub and he spoke with the thick verbiage and accent of an Irish immigrant from County Roscommon. Dunne's sly humor and political acumen even won the support of President Theodore Roosevelt, who was a frequent target of Mr. Dooley's barbs. Indeed Dunne's sketches became so popular and such a litmus test of public opinion that they were read each week at cabinet meetings in Roosevelt's White House. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! HUMOR 3

659 p. One old page repair. Some light foxing. Attractive later half leather binding. Original wraps bound in. Interesting early book plate of Leolyn Louise Everett (Spelman) [1888-1971]. Leolyn was the daughter of railroad magnet Henry A. Everett (1856-1917). At school she began her long career of writing poetry and miscellaneous pieces. She traveled to Italy in 1914, and as if predestined, she felt she had "come home" but this sojourn ended with the start of World War One. In 1917 she married a musician from a prestigious New England family - Timothy Mather Spelman (1891-1970). In 1919, the Spelmans leased the Villa Razzolini in Florence, Italy which was to become the favorite of many residences during their lifetime. The Spelmans lived mostly in Europe during the period between the world wars. In the region covered by this book (Menton, Alpes Maritimes, France), they maintained the Villa Pamela. They were great benefactors to the overseas Italian studies programs of Johns Hopkins University. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! FR5
