‎3 Prints of Terrier dogs‎

‎Signed lower in pencil in each print. 16 x 13-1/4 inches. Fine. Signed lower in pencil in each print. 16 x 13-1/4 inches. Kurt Meyer-Eberhardt German 1895 - 1957
Kurt Meyer-Eberhardt is one of the most famous and revered 20th century dog artists. He was born in 1895 in Leipzig Germany and died in Munich in 1977. He studied at the Weimar Academy of Fine Arts where he became a student under the artists Theodor Hagen and Lionel Feininger. He rejected a professorship in Weimar and went to Munich in 1918 where he decided to work entirely on animal engravings.
In 1926 he held his last exhibition in the "New Secession." He was a staunch individualist who rejected the offer of a professorship in Weimar because he valued his independence too much. The only thing he wanted was to continue depicting his beloved dogs cats and other animals.
His work has been published by the Hanfstaengl Publishing Company in Munich since 1917. His engravings are still published today at the printing shop in Munich - formally Franz Hanfstaengl Munich . All etchings are still printed on 300lb hand made acid-free paper printed by hand from the original copper plates using the same directions as given by the artist himself. unknown books‎

Laid in is AN AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY GORDON GRAND on his Millbrook NY letterhead dated Nov. 27 1934 to Harry Worcester Smith: "Thank you for sending me a copy of your letter to Connett. Dr. Somerville was really very generous about the book and understanding about the U.S.A. reflecting her visit. The Country Life people produced a thoroughly satisfying edition. They sent me a copy which someone promptly walked off with. I am asking Connett if he could not write over and procure half a dozen copies and I will ask him to send you on one with my compliments". This refers to the first English edition of "The Silver Horn" 1934 for which Somerville wrote a laudatory introduction. Grand adds a postscript: "If sometime after Dec. 10th you would care to send Col. Walter Faber's "Wit and Wisdom of the Shires" and Frederick Watson's "Robert Smith Surtees a Critical Study" on to me at Llewellyn Park West Orange N.J. c/o Mrs. James B. Dill I would very much like to read them and will get them back to you promptly. I meet so many disappointments in sporting books that I don't read as many as I should but when someone like yourself or Charles Lanier tell me that a book is worth the reading I long to get my teeth into it." Charles D. Lanier M.F.H. wrote several books of fox hunting recollections and was a co-author of "Thoroughbred Types: 1900-1925". LETTERS OF THIS QUALITY BY GORDON GRAND ARE RARE. ‎New Zealand Parkinson John Jr.‎

‎Yarns for Davy Jones‎

‎np: Privately printed for the author 1966. First edition. Frontispiece & 16 full page illustrations. viii 146 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Fine. Original red buckram spine and upper board gilt. Presentation inscription to front free endpaper TLS laid down to rear free endpaper. First edition. Frontispiece & 16 full page illustrations. viii 146 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. AN EARLY REPORT ON KIWI HERMIT TOM NEALE. Inscribed to Percy Chubb by the author Parkinson has also signed his name to the title-page. The TLS dated March 29 1970 concerns sailing matters relating to his crossing of the Atlantic.

Parkinson spent a good deal of his life at sea and relates numerous anecdotes here including some from serving in the Pacific in the closing stages of World War Two and another witnessing the atomic tests at Bikini Atoll. Of special interest is the chapter devoted to Surrarow Island which came as part of a cruise he made with his wife and others in 1963. The schooner Westward was completing a circumnavigation and they joined her at Tahiti before proceding to Bora Bora and then laying a course for American Samoa.

Suvarov Suwarrow Island was discovered in 1814 by Mikhail Lazarev. It is half a mile long and 400 yards wide with one of the finest lagoons in the South Pacific. Parkinson spent three days there in 1963 with his wife and Mr and Mrs Drayton Cochrane who were circumnavigating in stages on the Westward.

Parkinson and his crew were surprised to find the island was inhabited. Unknown to all but very few people Tom Neale the New Zealand sailor and survivalist had been living on the island since 1960 and "it was not surprising he talked almost incessantly chiefly about his experiences on Suvarov." It transpired that this was his second stint on the island having previously lived there 1952-4. In between visits "he married a Tongan woman and had two children but" Parkinson states "his return to Suvarov without her is not unusual by South Pacific standards." He remained on the island until 1964. Parkinson's description of their encounter with Neale is one of great admiration and fascination and accordingly filled with details of his life and notes the people who'd visited him over the years.

This is one of the earliest reports on Neale published in the same year as Neale's autobiography. Royalties from Neale's book funded his final and longest stay on Suwarrow 1967-77 and only illness forced him to leave. Neale was born in Wellington in 1902 though moved to Greymouth and then Timaru as a child. He joined the New Zealand navy as an apprentice engineer though bought himself out after four years and commenced his peripatetic life.

Rare. OCLC locates just five copies.
