Two large photos show mounted groups of players mallets raised; the third shows an attendant holding the bridle of a pony. Of four smaller photos one shows a man in gaucho outfit standing with ponies one shows another man holding a pony and two show several ponies together in one case feeding from a hay rack. 1 vols. Three photos approximately 6-1/2 x 9 inches; four approximately 3 x 4 inches. Rare Argentine Polo Photographs Ca. 1883. A very early and possibly unique set of polo photographs dating from the game's earliest days in Argentina a country subsequently famous for its superb record in International competitions. Invented in Persia the game was revived in India in 1863 and was brought to England by British officers in 1869. A number of Englishmen many of them younger sons of British nobility emigrated to Argentina in the latter decades of the century and around 1883 they introduced polo first played around Buenos Aires which quickly spread and became a national sport. Some of the faces in the photos offered here have a distinctly English appearance and it is not too fanciful to assume that these may indeed be some of the founders of the Argentine game. It is also possible that these are the first photographs taken of polo in Argentina.

AN HISTORIC SET OF PHOTOGRAPHS. Dale Polo at Home and Abroad p. 182 et seq unknown books‎

Edmund Everett Garrison 1893-1975 was one of the great fly-rod makers probably the greatest. His rods are collector's items and $15000 is not an unusual price to pay for one. Garrison trained as an engineer worked full time for most of his adult life in a structural engineering firm and only produced his meticulously hand-crafted rods evenings and weekends; his output was thus comparatively small but each rod that left his hand was a masterpiece. He brought to an old art a unique technological competence which made for outstanding performance but it remained an art.

Nearly twenty thousand copies of this book have been sold in previous trade editions; this is one of only 36 Deluxe copies the edition quickly sold out and contains two glossy photographs one of Garrison and family members in which he holds one of his rods the other of Carmichael working on a rod of his own and an ALS of Garrison.

A SPLENDID AND HIGHLY DESIRABLE VOLUME. ‎AN INTERESTING ARCHIVE OF ART AND CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN AMERICAN ARTIST HAROLD SMITH AND DANIEL ROCHFORD MANAGING EDITOR OF THE SPORTSMAN AND LATER ESSO EXECUTIVE 1937-1969‎

‎Boston and New York 1937. With numerous examples of Smith's art including two watercolor studies for his November 1932 football cover of The Sportsman magazine. 1 vols. With numerous examples of Smith's art including two watercolor studies for his November 1932 football cover of The Sportsman magazine. 1 vols. Archive of a Sportsman Magazine Artist. An extremely interesting archive chronicling the personal friendship and professional relationship of two colorful individuals. During Daniel Rochford's five-year tenure as Managing Editor of The Sportsman Harold Smith did a number of small black and white drawings for the magazine and at least one cover of a stylized formation of football players two watercolor studies of which form part of this collection. Rochford left the magazine in 1935 to enter the public relations field subsequently joining Standard Oil of New Jersey and until Smith's death in 1969 gave the artist a number of Esso commissions for brochures and film strips as well as other work.

The archive includes approximately 35 ALS from Smith some 65 pages and two post cards about 30 carbons of letters from Rochford mostly dating from the 1940s on Esso matters plus some other correspondence. In addition included in Smith's art works are are nine pencil sketches for 1930s political cartoons two pencil advertisement roughs for Mt. Tremblant ski area and four watercolor skiing sketches nine sheets of pencil sketches possibly for a book or article eight amusing ink on tissue sketches for Esso publications one black and white and four watercolor caricatures of the artist and others and a particularly delightful 18 x 24 sheet of 19 watercolor scenes illustrating a 1946 visit Smith paid to the Rochfords to do their portraits.

In his last years Rochford regretted that distance and circumstance prevented the possibility of he and Smith collaborating on a book. ‎Rawls Edward H Palmer Bradley W.‎

‎Moisie River‎

‎Boston: Privately Printed by Geo. H. Ellis Co 1938. First edition one of only 30 copies this copy numbered in ink "Seven. Illustrated with 28 photographs on 14 plates and 5 hand-colored plates after old prints and a photograph; with folding map tipped in on rear pastedown. 1 vols. 8vo. Original dark blue grained leatherette title gilt on upper cover. A fine fresh copy. First edition one of only 30 copies this copy numbered in ink "Seven". Illustrated with 28 photographs on 14 plates and 5 hand-colored plates after old prints and a photograph; with folding map tipped in on rear pastedown. 1 vols. 8vo. E.H. Rawls Copy. In his Foreword the author states: "These sketches were written for the members of the Moisie Salmon Club. The sole purpose was to give information to them of the waters and conditions of the Moisie River and its branches above the places customarily fished by them.". The Moisie is one of a network of navigable rivers running about 110 miles northward from the St. Lawrence in eastern Quebec; old and well worn portage paths testify to the antiquity of the route along which for hundreds of years Indians have hunted and fished. For salmon and sea trout it is one of the richest areas known. It is not surprising that the Moisie Salmon Club was founded to reap the benefits of this bounty; what is surprising is that so much care attention and expense has been lavished on a book limited to only 30 copies. The text consists primarily of the author's descriptions of areas north of the more usual fishing sites based on his explorations as a sportsman with guides. In addition to five colored plates which tend to establish the romantic mood of the region there are 28 superb reproductions of sepia photographs printed on special photographic-type paper to convey both the look and the actual feel of the originals. The book's 78 pages conclude with an Index and inside the back cover is mounted a folding map of the area described.

The book is rare not in Wetzel or Heller not seen by Bruns and the only copy we know of to appear at auction - a worn copy - brought $1870 at the Netz sale in New York in 1986.

This copy bears the ownership signature of E.H. Rawls on the front flyleaf: pages 12 to 19 comprise Edward H. Rawls' own account of his 1929 trip to the East Branch Chute and Cran Serré of the Moisie River where he was the first to take salmon on a light rod above the falls in defiance of "the old story retold until believed by everyone that salmon would rise ot the fly above the rapids". Palmer notes that Rawls' exploits prompted the club to build the Webster trail and develop the upper river.

A choice association copy. Not in Wetzel or Heller; Bruns: "Not seen"; Bibliotheca Salmo Salar 151 Privately Printed by Geo. H. Ellis Co unknown books‎

Printed grey wrappers printed in green and red "Christmas Greetings" upper left and a candle lower right. Fine copy with ink note across front cover "With the best of good wishes for the best of good fishes Mr & Mrs. Will. H. Dilg". Custom blue half morocco dropbox. First separate edition reprinted from Izaak Walton League Monthly. Frontispiece photographic portrait of the author holding his hat his rod and his bonefish illustrated by Bessie Bethal Crank. vi 18 pp. 1 vols. 12mo. RARE ZANE GREY PAMPHLET. Privately printed Christmas greeting from Zane Grey recounting how he and his brother came to fish at Long Key and many of the characters he encountered.

The book was issued in a very small edition reprinting an article first published in the Izaak Walton League Monthly. William Dilg was a friend and correspondent of Zane Grey who founded the Izaak Walton League in 1922 as a conservation and angling group. Within the space of four years and with the support of Zane Grey Emerson Hough Stewart Edward White and other writers Dilg had built it into an influential nationwide organization with more than 200000 members and some 2500 local chapters. In 1926 DIlg was ousted as president of the league amid some controversy. The Forest and Stream issue for June 1926 reports on the controversy and bears the headline "ZANE GREY Declares for WILL H. DILG" and includes an open letter from Grey stating that he had resigned from the League and giving his reasons for a call to resist the commercial interests that displaced Dilg who served as League president and as editor of the monthly Magazine.

A four-page Typed Letter signed Bill" from Dilg to Zane Grey dated 2 August 1926 restates Dilg's complaint about the actions of the "Junta" and proposes a plan for action by Grey in support of Dilg and the interests of the league's members. The organization Dilg founded still exists and pursues conservation initiatives.

The Bonefish Brigade is RARE and the present copy is inscribed by the editor who founded the Izaak Walton League and commissioned the piece with a notable letter pleading for Grey's support.
