Not all of these are of top quality and the publishers of this 1904 reprint while reproducing most with careful fidelity have replaced six of the weaker ones with nine others of superior quality by Alken Dighton and Ben Marshall for a total of 22. London 1787.

"This Scottish philanthropist was for many years a bookseller of eminence in London and devoted the fortune he acquired in his business to the improvement of his country. He had long been concerned over the wretched condition of the Highlanders and had made as many as sixteen journeys since 1764 into various parts of the North. He succeeded in arousing the active interest of the London Highland Society in the formation of a British Society for extending the fisheries and improving the sea ports on the coasts. Subscriptions were taken and then he set out on the above recorded tour for which he was voted a gold medal by the Society. The two principal improvements he advocated were inland navigation e.g. tbe Crinan Canal since accomplished and the establishment of free villages or fishing stations on the east coast." - Cox.

Cox says of this French edition: "This work served as a good introduction of Scotland to Frenchmen and is of importance for the story of Ossianism in France. He reproduced some of the arguments of John Smith's Gaelic Antiquities Edinb. 1780 in reply to Johnson's attacks whereby Frenchmen became acquainted with some of the theories of Smith an acquired some notion of the Highland bards.

The Tour was first published in 1787 at the Highland Society of London. Bensley Bolt Court Fleet Street. First sheet illustrated with numerous sporting subjects in the style of George Cruikshank. 1 vols. Folio. Fine fresh copy. A four-page advertisement for Bell's paper printed on two conjugate leaves by B. Bensley Bolt Court Fleet Street. First sheet illustrated with numerous sporting subjects in the style of George Cruikshank. 1 vols. Folio. Bell's Life in London was a rival to Pierce Egan's Life in London and Sporting Guide an offshoot of his highly successful book. Egan began his periodical in 1824 as a Sunday weekly and in 1826 asked Cruikshank to design some wood engravings to head the paper's regular features which increased its circulation. Some Cruikshank designs were subsequently used without the artist's consent by Bell's paper and in 1827 Egan unable to achieve the success of his competitor sold out to Bell who merged the two journals into one. Bell's was a conspicuous success: it sold as many as sixteen thousand copies weekly to the poorest classes. This advertisement in addition to its lively cover of over twenty woodcuts features a number of poetical effusions to Royalty the Nobility Members of Parliament the Clergy the Army and Navy the Commercial Agricultural and Theatrical Worlds and of course Sportsmen of Every Degree The advertisement is not a part of Bell's periodical but was a separately issued publication to promote circulation.
