‎Baseball Fayols George EP. E. P.‎

‎Caricature of two sporting gents watching a Philadelphia Athletics baseball game ca. 1905‎

‎Philadelphia 1905. Pencil and ink on paper inscribed "To My Friends Bill & Tom" and signed lower right. 1 vols. 11 x 8-1/4 inches mounted on backing board and framed to 13-3/4 x 11-3/4 inches overall. Dust soiled and foxed but not disfiguringly so. Pencil and ink on paper inscribed "To My Friends Bill & Tom" and signed lower right. 1 vols. 11 x 8-1/4 inches mounted on backing board and framed to 13-3/4 x 11-3/4 inches overall. Baseball Sports Caricature Philadelphia Ca. 1905. The subjects two dapper young men seated in third base line box seats are identified as Bill Reynolds and Tommy O'Keefe. Both are nattily dressed with diamond stickpins in their ties; Tommy wears a straw boater with a hatband labeled "green and yellow" presumably the team colors while Bill holds a program headed "Athletics Line Up" with an ad for "Reynolds Wet Shop" suggesting his vocation or possibly avocation. Bill is smoking a cigar around which he is saying "Now you see that's a two bagger!" to which Tommy replies "You don't say so!". The style of the drawing is so similiar to that of a newspaper sports cartoon that it seems almost certain it was done by a professional sports cartoonist most likely on the staff of the Philadelphia Public Ledger or other local journal of the day.

A unique evocation of the national sport at the turn of the century an interesting relic of the Philadelphia Athletics and a talented depiction of two fans who have survived obscurity by being patrons of The Old Ball Game. unknown books‎
