HG Pickering"

In a letter which we hve had in the past Pickering explains the genesis of this book: "In 1931 an incident occurred on my annual fishing trip which I thought sufficiently amusing to dress up as a thin yarn and send out to my friends as a Christmas greeting. It was my thought to have it printed in pamphlet form by the office printer. Our mutual friend G. Franklin Ludington suggested that I should have it done by Derrydale and print only ninety-nine copies that it should be illustrated and that Mrs. Pickering should color the frontispiece. These things were done and to my astonishment and eventual undoing the book shortly became a collector's item." Siegel 31; Frazier p-6-a The Derrydale Press unknown books

Fine portrait of Jim Deren on the Madison River in Montana in silhouette with his arm and rod extended against a sunset sky the river in middle ground reflecting the sunlit clouds.

Inscribed by photographer Larry Madison whose books include Trout River 1988 to his friend the proprietor of the Anglers Roost tackle shop in Manhattan "To Jim Deren a very old a very dear friend and one of the best fishermen I have ever known. Larry Madison"

In his New Yorker profile of Jim Deren "An Angler at Heart" Ian Frazier wrote:
"On the inside of the door to his shop Deren has posted what is probably his most famous maxim 'There don't have to be a thousand fish in the river; let me locate a good one and I'll get a thousand dreams out of him before I catch him - and if I catch him I'll turn him loose.'
"For Larry Madison a wildlife photographer and magazine editor who often fished with Deren thirty years ago a thousand dreams were hundreds more than his patience could stand: 'Jim would get in a river and just pound it all day. I'd say "Oh Christ you been in there ten hours and you haven't had a hit. Let's go home." Not him.'"

A striking portrait and a fine association. England 1864. 1 vols. Thin 4to. Original black limp morocco slight rubbing to edges and extremities else near fine. 1 vols. Thin 4to. Manuscript 19th Century Sporting Poems. A volume of particular interest consisting of 60 pages on which are inscribed fair copies of 14 sporting poems songs and parodies presumably in the hand of the author the final entry dated Feb. 17 1864. These are replete with local and topical allusions and proper names "And tho' Britannia still may hold / Dominion o'er the sea / The gates and roads belong I'm told / To Mrs. Coventry." Various hunts are named "The Southern wind blew sharp and cold / The winter sun shown clear / When the Rufford Hounds with Percy bold / Call all from far and near.". The verses are robust with lots of quotes and exclamation points and appear to be unpublished. Pasted in at the end is a lengthy hunting poem of similiar nature cut from a newspaper but as it is signed "Prudence" it is of scant help in suggesting the identity of the author of this jolly collection.

UNIQUE. unknown books
