Lou Gehrig Pride of the Yankees
New York: Grosset & Dunlap. Very Good. 1942. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; This book is in Very Good condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean bright condition. THe spine ends and corners have some very beginning bumping. The front cover has several tiny spots of ground-in dirt. The text pages are clean but noticeably toned due to the acid content of the paper used. There is a previous owner's inked name on the front endpaper. "A native of New York City and a student at Columbia University Gehrig signed with the Yankees in 1923. He set several major-league records during his career including the most career grand slams 23 since broken by Alex Rodriguez and most consecutive games played 2130 a record that stood for 56 years and was long considered unbreakable until surpassed by Cal Ripken Jr. in 1995. Gehrig's consecutive game streak ended on May 2 1939 when he voluntarily took himself out of the lineup stunning both players and fans after his performance on the field became hampered by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis an incurable neuromuscular illness now commonly referred to in North America as "Lou Gehrig's disease." The disease forced him to retire at age 36 and was the cause of his death two years later. The pathos of his farewell from baseball was capped off by his iconic 1939 "Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth" speech at Yankee Stadium." . Grosset & Dunlap hardcover

The statistics include everything from 1903 through 1947 and the rear cover of the book gives the 1948 season schedule. "During the first half of the 20th century the Pacific Coast League developed into one of the premier regional baseball leagues. The cities enfranchised by the other two high-minor leagues the International League and the American Association were generally coordinated geographically with the major leagues but such was not the case with the PCL. With no major league baseball team existing west of St. Louis the PCL was unrivaled for American west coast baseball. Although it was never recognized as a true major league its quality of play was considered very high. Drawing from a strong pool of talent in the area the PCL produced many outstanding players including such future major-league Hall of Famers as Joe DiMaggio Ted Williams Tony Lazzeri Paul Waner Earl Averill Bobby Doerr Joe Gordon and Ernie Lombardi. Amid success experienced after World War II league President Pants Rowland began to envision the PCL as a third major league. During 1945 the league voted to become a major league. However the American League and National League were uninterested in allowing it to join their ranks." . John B. Old paperback

The book and its contents are in generally clean bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. Each player's page includes his signature including the coaches and the trainer. The first page is for the manager Francis Joseph O'Doul -- better known as Lefty O'Doul." The San Francisco Seals were a minor league baseball team in San Francisco California that played in the Pacific Coast League from 1903 until 1957 before transferring to Phoenix Arizona. They were named for the abundant California sea lion and harbor seal populations in the Bay Area. The 1909 1922 1925 and 1928 Seals were recognized as being among the 100 greatest minor league teams of all time." "In 1945 a controlling interest in the team was purchased by businessman Paul Fagan with the stated intention of bringing Major League Baseball to the west coast by having the Pacific Coast League becoming the nation's third major league. He spent thousands of dollars upgrading Seals Stadium to perceived major league standards. He hired former major league player Lefty O'Doul a native San Franciscan and fan favorite as manager. Though the Seals won the pennant in 1946 subsequent teams under Fagan's watch did not fare as well typically finishing in the second division. Rival clubs did not buy into Fagan's major league ambitions. Rather they established working agreements with major league teams and fared better than did the independent Seals." ; Signed by Collection of Signatures . San Francisco Seals Baseball unknown
