BLOCK DAVID; WILES TIM FOREWORD
Baseball Before We Knew It: A Search For The Roots Of The Game
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln and London: 2005. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. It may be America's game but no one seems to know how or when baseball really started. Theories abound myths proliferate but reliable information has been in short supplyuntil now when Baseball before We Knew It brings fresh new evidence of baseball's origins into play. David Block looks into the early history of the game and of the 150-year-old debate about its beginnings. He tackles one stubborn misconception after another debunking the enduring belief that baseball descended from the English game of rounders and revealing a surprising new explanation for the most notorious myth of all the Abner Doubleday - Cooperstown story. Block's book takes readers on an exhilarating journey through the centuries in search of clues to the evolution of our modern National Pastime. Among his startling discoveries is a set of long-forgotten baseball rules from the 1700s. Block evaluates the originality and historical significance of the Knickerbocker rules of 1845 revisits European studies on the ancestry of baseball which indicate that the game dates back hundreds if not thousands of years and assembles a detailed history of games and pastimes from the Middle Ages onward that contributed to baseball's development. In its thoroughness and reach and its extensive descriptive bibliography of early baseball sources this book is a unique and invaluable resourcea comprehensive reliable and readable account of baseball before it was America's game. David Block is a long-time collector of early baseball books and memorabilia and is a passionate lifelong fan of the game and its history. "Given North American baseball fans' nearly inexhaustible appetite for the arcana of their favourite sport astonishingly few scholars have ever undertaken the detailed historical and anthropological research to find out where the game actually began. . . . Now through painstaking bibliographic and archival research on display in his extensive appendices Block has established . . . the true forerunner of American baseball. . . . By pushing beyond baseball's reputed origins in an English children's game David Block has discovered the game's true origins in an even older English game."Warren Goldstein Times Literary Supplement. "The suggestion that America's Game might have originated somewhere besides America so 'inflamed passions and patriotism' writes David Block that the idea still burns us. . . . Block has produced a deliciously researched feast that lays this controversy to rest. . . . Block has assembled such a rich pile of evidence for the game's European origins that one might wonder why there ever was a controversy. . . . Once an American reader gets past the disappointment of discovering baseball's deep European roots Block's book is a perfect delight. He has unearthed magnificent medieval manuscripts . . . That show that baseball is just the latest in a very long line of stick-and-ball games."Charles Hirshberg Sports Illustrated "As if this country doesn't have enough to worry about it turns out America's national pastime may not even be American. At least according to Baseball before We Knew It a new book by David Block. Block contends the origins of the game date to the mid-14th century and can be traced to northern Europe and parts of Africa. Hold on there pal. What about good old Abner Doubleday 'There's no evidence he even played baseball' Block says. 'It's simply a case of people passing down stories that have never been substantiated.' Now there's something we seem to be very good at." Morty Ain ESPN: The Magazine University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln and London: 2005 hardcover

GALLICO PAUL; JACK ZACHARY MICHAEL INTRODUCTION
Farewell To Sport
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln and London: 2008. Softcover. Brand new book. For fourteen years during the golden age of sports Paul Gallico was one of America's ace sportswriters. He saw them allthe stars and the hams the immortals and the phonies in boxing wrestling baseball football golf tennis and every other field of muscular endeavor in which men and women try to break hearts and necks for cash or glory. Then in 1937 at the height of his game and the height of the payroll Gallico suddenly and famously called it quits and left the New York Daily News. But before he departed the world of sports he left his legions of fans one last hurrah: a collection of his best sports essays called appropriately Farewell to Sport. Here in twenty-six chapters every major and minor sport is covered. Included are sketches of Babe Ruth Jack Dempsey Gene Tunney Tex Rickard and Jack Sharkey written in an accessible conversational style. Often credited with creating "participatory journalism" Gallico would play golf with Bobby Jones catch Major League pitcher Dizzy Dean's fastball swim with Johnny Weissmuller play tennis with Helen Wills catch passes from quarterback Benny Friedman and box with Jack Dempsey he lasted one minute thirty-seven seconds. Paul Gallico 1897-1976 is best known now as the author of The Poseidon Adventure which was made into a movie along with several other works of his. His first novel Snow Goose has been in print continuously since 1941. Zachary Michael Jack is the editor of Inside the Ropes: Sportswriters Get Their Game On Nebraska 2008. "A high-colored panorama of thirteen years of sport a summing up of the success and sob stories."New York Review of Books "Farewell to Sport debunked professional wrestling and decried discrimination against black athletes and the hypocrisy of amateurism."Molly Ivins New York Times "Gallico is one of that small circle of writers who are the despair of the rest of us pedestrians; he cannot be dull. . . . Whether he is discussing Mildred Babe Didrikson or Primo Carnera or the race question in sport he is always entertaining."John R. THOMSON CINDY & BROWN SCOTT; JENKINS FERGUSON FOREWORD
Three Finger: The Mordecai Brown Story
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln and London: 2008. Softcover. Brand new book. On October 8 1908 Mordecai Brown clutched a half-dozen notes inside his coat pocket. The message of each was clear: we'll kill you if you pitch and beat the Giants. A black handprint marked each note the signature of the Italian Mafia. Mordecai Browndubbed "Three Finger" because of a childhood farm injurywas the dominant pitcher for the great Chicago Cubs team of the early twentieth century. Brown's handicap enabled him to throw pitches with an unconventional movement that left batters bewilderedthe curve ball that Ty Cobb once called "the most devastating" he had ever faced. How Brown responded to the Mafia's threats in 1908 mirrored the way he took life in general: with unflappable courage and resolve. Telling his story for the first time Cindy Thomson and Scott Brown track Mordecai from the Indiana countryside to the coal mines from semipro ball to the Majors from the World Series mound back down to the Minors. Along the way they retrieve the lost lore of one of baseball's greatest pitchers and chronicle one man's determination to attain a dream that most believed was unreachable. Cindy Thomson is the author of a historical novel Brigid of Ireland and a member of the Society for American Baseball Research SABR. Scott Brown is a charter member of the Diamond Brotherhood a SABR member Old Timers' Baseball Association of Chicago officer and the founder of the Mordecai Brown Legacy Foundation. Ferguson Jenkins a former Chicago Cub is a Hall of Fame pitcher and Cy Young Award winner. "Among the great pleasures of the narrative is the authors' ability to recreate the gritty atmosphere of early baseball. By contrast today's game seems sedate. Rivalries were intense and local within the Three I LeagueIndiana Illinois Iowa for example. Dangers lurked from mobsters brawling opponents and teammates and head-hunting pitchers. Umpiring was a high-risk profession." Steve Golos Ohioana Quarterly "An excellent window into a time when sport and society were wildly different from today and it successfully reminds us of Mordecai Brown's rightful place in baseball's collective memory." Tim Denevi Aethlon: The Journal of Sport Literature "Deadball aficionados baseball fans in general and those loving a well written story should read this great book."Mark Dugo The Inside Game University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln and London: 2008 paperback

SCOTT DAVID; CONOVER ROGER L. FOREWORD
The Art And Aesthetics Of Boxing
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln and London: 2009. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. What separates the chaos of fighting from the coherent ritual of boxing According to author David Scott it is a collection of aesthetic constructions including the shape of the ring the predictable rhythm of timed rounds the uniformity of the boxers' glamorous attire and the stylization of the combatants' posture and punches. In The Art and Aesthetics of Boxing Scott explores the ways in which these and other aesthetic elements of the sport have evolved over time. Scott comprehensively addresses the rich dialogue between boxing and the arts suggesting that boxing not only possesses intrinsic aesthetic qualities but also has inspired painters graphic designers surrealist poets and modern writers to identify expand and respond to the aesthetic properties of the sport. Divided into three parts the book moves from a consideration of the evolution and intrinsic aesthetics of boxing to the responses to the sport by cubist and futurist painters and sculptors installation artists poster designers photographers and finally surrealist poets and modernist writers. With distinctive illustrations and photographs in nine short chapters Scott creates a visual as well as a textual narrative that supplements and concretely demonstrates the deep dynamic relationship between the art of boxing and the world of art and literature. A middleweight amateur boxer David Scott is a professor of French textual and visual studies at Trinity College in Dublin. He is the author of several books on semiotics including Semiologies of Travel from Gautier to Baudrillard European Stamp Design: A Semiotic Approach and Pictorialist Poetics: Poetry and the Visual Arts in Nineteenth-Century France. Roger L. Conover is a writer curator and the executive editor of the MIT Press where he publishes books on art architecture and cultural studies. He also is the former boxing commissioner for the state of Maine. "In The Art and Aesthetics of Boxing David Scott addresses the daunting task of establishing a groundwork for the aesthetics of boxingand succeeds with consummate authority. . . . In Scott's incisive blend of art history sociology and sports writing he makes a daring and original statement about fighters and the artists who enshrined them."Robert Anasi author of The Gloves "In David Scott's hands boxing becomes a kaleidoscope of psychological sociological ethnological and aesthetic symptoms and indices which transform the infliction of minor injury into a crucial cultural investment. . . . If boxing then has seemed for so long to encapsulate the neuroses and satisfactions of alpha-maledom it is only because we have missed all the nuances and subtextual activity that this book makes available to us with such shrewd and penetrating analysis."Clive Scott professor of American literature at the University of East Anglia England member of the British Academy and boxing enthusiast University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln and London: 2009 hardcover

CROPPER CORRY
Playing At Monarchy: Sport As Metaphor In Nineteenth-century France
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln and London: 2008. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. For centuries sports have been used to mask or to uncover important social and political problems and there is no better example of this than France during the nineteenth century when it changed from monarchy to empire to republic. Prior to the French Revolution sports and games were the exclusive domain of the nobility. The revolution however challenged the notion of noble privilege and leisure activities began spreading to all levels of society. Games either evolved from Old Regime spectacles into bourgeois pastimes such as hunting or died out altogether as did trictrac. During this period sports and games became the symbolic cultural battlefield of an emerging modern state. Playing at Monarchy looks at the ways sports and games tennis fencing bullfighting chess trictrac hunting and the Olympics are metaphorically used to defend and subvert to praise and mock both class and political power structures in nineteenth-century France. Corry Cropper examines what shaped these games of the nineteenth-century and how they appeared as allegory in French literature in the fiction of Balzac Mrime and Flaubert and in newspapers historical studies and even game manuals. Throughout he shows how the representation of play in all types of literature mirrors the most important social and political rifts in postrevolutionary France while also serving as propaganda for competing political agendas. Though its focus is on France Playing at Monarchy hints at the way these nineteenth-century developments inform perceptions of sport even today. Corry Cropper is an associate professor of French studies at Brigham Young University and the author of several articles published in Nineteenth-Century French Studies the French Review and French Literature Series. "Anyone interested in French history or the social role of sports in Europe should find Playing at Monarchy well worth the time. Like Robert Darnton's The Great Cat Massacre Cropper investigates historical "ways of thinking" with wit and whimsy-in prose congenial to a twenty-first century American audience."Alex Shakespeare Sports Literature Association University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln and London: 2008 hardcover

WILEY RALPH
Serenity: A Boxing Memoir
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln: 2000. Softcover. Brand new book. Ralph Wiley is the author or coauthor of several works most recently Born to Play: The Eric Davis Story. "This is a surprising book a terrific book. It's not about boxing but about an odd demanding world in which boxing is the thread the key to existence. Wiley deftly broadens the delineation of this world and its people. Perceptive reporting is the foundation and perceptive reporting is rare enough. Wiley enhances it with clear quick writing laced with humor and with a sensitivity that lends brilliance to this impressive work."Robert W. Creamer author of Baseball and Other Matters in 1941 "Ralph Wiley with Serenity has produced an original book about the ring. . . . He can dig beneath the surface and show us what really happened in a bout: why Thomas Hearns with too much faith in his powerful right hand lost to Sugar Ray Leonard in their first match. . . . Or why Roberto Duran was acting out of prudence not cowardice when he quit in his second fight against Leonard. . . . Yet the book is not really about boxing. Boxing in Serenity is what T. S. Eliot speaking of plot called the meat a burglar brings to distract the watchdog. The book is really about growing up in a world where you had to defend yourself physically to survive."New York Times "Wiley's rapport with boxers is profound."Publisher's Weekly "Wiley is one writer who really knows his way around a boxing ring. . . . He writes with passion and understanding about complex violent men and their oddly redemptive sport."Booklist University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln: 2000 paperback

ZAREMBA ALAN JAY
The Madness Of March: Bonding And Betting With The Boys In Las Vegas
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln and London: 2009. Softcover. Brand new book. Every spring the first four days of the NCAA men's basketball tournament attracts a horde of basketball bettors to Las Vegas. From the tip-off of the tournament's first game on Thursday morning to the final whistle on Sunday throngs of bettorsoverwhelmingly malesit in smoky casinos obsessively watching as many as forty-eight college basketball games. This book immerses readers in that action. In The Madness of March: Bonding and Betting with the Boys in Las Vegas Alan Jay Zaremba travels to The Strip and gives us a front-row view of the betting culture that surrounds the frenzied first weekend of the tournament. Alternating between humorous accounts of gamblers' exploits and cultural theories on sports in society Zaremba provides an engaging analysis of the sporting ritual that such gambling has become. With forays into the history of the tournament the background of sports betting and a little betting of his own Zaremba raises the question of whether this subculture of March Madness is a blessing or a curseand what finally it all means. Alan Jay Zaremba received his BA from the University of Albany and PhD from the University of Buffalo. He is an associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Northeastern University in Boston Massachusetts. Dr. Zaremba was the keynote speaker at the Eighth International Conference on Knowledge Culture and Change in Organisations. "The seasonal madness of the NCAA basketball tournament played against the ongoing folly that is Las Vegas: it's hard to find a more combustible admixture in sports but Zaremba . . . conveys it all with cool wit. . . . Although the action takes place in Las Vegas the book makes it easy to extrapolate this subtext of March Madness playing itself out nationwide. A sleeper of a book."Alan Moores Booklist "Alan Jay Zaremba . . . has captured the excitement the color the flavor and craziness of college basketball betting in Las Vegas in his new book The Madness of March. . . . This book itself is like a travelogue of places people concepts conspiracy theories and if Hunter Thompson were alive today he'd embrace the author who captures the moments and rides the roller coaster of emotions with the bettors."Howard Schwartz.
