Indeed there is a gift inscription in ink: "Inspirations to the Celtic bard from a Saxon." Interesting to consider who among the poets represented is still well-known and who is forgotten. Charles Sedley Winthrop M. Praed Hartley Coleridge Yet Blake is there and all the Metaphysicals I thought their popularity came later. Two female poets are represented: Aphra Behn 1642-1689 and Anna L. Barbauld 1743-1825. The editor is not named. Octavo 17 cm; xiii 296 pages. Bound in faux vellum. Several of the stories appeared in the anonymously edited anthology THE BAKED HEAD AND OTHER TALES. NOW FIRST COLLECTED AND FORMING THE SECOND VOLUME OF "PUTNAM'S STORY LIBRARY" New York: G. P. Putnam & Co. 1856 including "Story of the Baked Head" and "Infatuation" the latter concerning forgery. Not a children's book or a book of holiday stories. The American Catalogue dates this book 1886 but provides a different subtitle: CHRISTMAS STORIES: SELECTIONS FROM THE BEST WRITERS. So this may be a later printing. An anthology of twenty-two tales by unspecified authors: "the best selections from the standard story literature of the English language" according to the editor's preface. Most of the material appears to be British. "The Sultan's Bear" from CHAMBERS'S EDINBURGH JOURNAL is an amusing oriental satire. "The Ghost-Raiser" from HARPER'S is a clever tale of a confidence scam. "The Pierced Skull" is a murder mystery; "Our Major's Story" is a tale of somnambulism. Other material is sentimental romantic etc. This is one apparently the first of several books at least five in "Putnam's Story Library" series. Wright II 1727. The actual contents are "Two Millionaires" novella by Sarah Fry with German setting "'I Owe You Nothing Sir'" short story among English high society "Notes of a Journey Across the Isthmus of Panama" sketch "The Two Passports" short story with an intercalated adventure tale set during the Napoleonic wars "Australia and Van Diemen's Land" long sketch "The Fairy Cup" a short fairy tale by Alfred Crowquill "The White Swallow" novelette set among American Indians "Fowling in Faroe and Shetland" sketch of Scottish rural life "A Fuqueer's Curse" humorous story about an Indian fakir "The Deserts of Africa" long geographical sketch "Life in an Indiaman" naval novelette "The Dealer in Wisdom" Arabian Nights story with a dollop of fantasy "The Key of the Street" sketch about being a hobo for a night in London. The material all with exotic or foreign settings is oddly at variance with the book's title which as the preface explains alludes to the entrepreneurialism of the New Englander. Wright American Fiction 1851-1875 cites Wentworth & Co. as the primary imprint noting that this book was also issued by Dayton & Wentworth as in the present copy; he notes subsequent re-titled editions by Wentworth & Co. 1856 and by Wentworth and Company 1857. The book is copyright 1855 by Dayton and Wentworth. The absence of Dayton from the three other imprints two of which were obviously later suggests that Dayton and Wentworth was the original imprint. This book appears to be of British not American origin. Wright II 2828. London: Published at the Leisure Hour Office: The Religious Tract Society 1863. Octavo pp. 1-7 8-288 five illustrations original pebbled gray cloth spine titled and ruled in gold. First edition Perhaps a later printing circa 1880s of this collection of didactic adventure fiction probably intended for young readers. These stories were probably first published THE LEISURE HOUR an illustrated penny-weekly paper which featured moralistic self-improving serial novels most of them published anonymously. Includes "Tale of a Detective" pp. 102-131 a crime story set in 1845. All the stories are presented anonymously but "A Race for Life" is credited to the author of "Danesbury House" and "A Life Secret" i.e. "A Life's Secret" both works written by Ellen Price Wood Mrs. Henry Wood. A popular book reprinted many times into the early twentieth century. Thirteen stories in all. "The Power of Music" tells two stories one about Bach another about Gluck. Hubin 1994 p. 24.
