ISBN 9782503515106.‎ ‎This study deals with the work of the most prolific Dutch book illuminators, the so-called Masters of the Dark Eyes, named after the most conspicuous aspect of their style: the dark, heavily accentuated shadows round the eyes of the figures. With their elaborately illuminated manuscripts, these masters completely dominated book production in the County of Holland during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Their work is characterized by an overwhelming wealth of decorative and pictorial richness, which is especially evident in the unusually ornate programmes of the Books of Hours, and a new type of border decoration derived from the Ghent-Bruges School. This style of painting was practised by many artists of differing talents, as demonstrated by the large number of surviving manuscripts. Not all of the illuminators worked in Holland. Some of them settled in the Southern Netherlands, others emigrated to England, where they illuminated manuscripts for members of the English court. This monograph seeks to order, analyze and evaluate the work of the Masters of the Dark Eyes, and to position their achievements within the context of book illumination in the Northern Netherlands during the 'Waning of the Middle Ages'. It explores a virtually uncharted territory of Dutch manuscript painting. The accompanying descriptive catalogue provides complementary information on more than 70 manuscripts, many of which have never been published at length before. The work is illustrated with a wide selection of colour and black-and-white reproductions. ISBN 9782503513867.‎ ‎From the Treasure-House of Scripture presents the first comprehensive assessment of the relation between the Latin Bible and the text of the highly influential late-medieval devotional manual known as De Imitatione Christi (The Imitation of Christ). Consisting of a detailed analysis of scriptural sources in The Imitation, this work contains the complete Latin text of The Imitation juxtaposed against 3815 Vulgate source texts. Included are some 2600 sources collated from citations in seventy editions of The Imitation, and some 1200 sources newly identified in this study. A collation is presented of explicit statements in The Imitation on ?Scripture? and aspects of lectio divina (?prayed reading?). The textual analysis highlights several aspects of the relation between The Imitation and the Vulgate. First, some fifty ?forms of usage? of scriptural passages in The Imitation are described. Secondly, some three hundred scriptural passages important in informing the overall content of The Imitation are identified. Thirdly, the role of scriptural sources in helping to shape the ascetic character of The Imitation is discussed. Background information is presented on the content, authorship and influence of The Imitation; the Devotio moderna (?New Devotion? or ?Modern Devotion?) movement; the life of Thomas a Kempis; the role of Scripture and lectio divina in the New Devotion movement; and the general role of Scripture in Thomas a Kempis?s oeuvre. It is not known when Kadizâde Mehmed Ârif Efendi was born in Erzurum. It is also known for its "Ispirî" and "Erzurumî" monikers. Kadizâde, who received his basic education in Ispir, completed the madrasah in Erzurum and received a consent. Kadizâde, who returned to Erzurum after receiving his second conscience in Istanbul, was appointed as a professor at Sultaniye Madrasah. While he was working as a professor, he also worked as a mufti of Erzurum. Since he was a mufti in Erzurum for 15 years, he started to be mentioned with his nickname 'El-Muftî'. Kadizâde, who was a classical Ottoman scholar and promoted his works in Arabic; he wrote many treatises in the fields of qalam, fiqh, hadith, tafsir, Arabic language and sufism.
