4to. (5), 129 ff. German and Latin manuscript on paper, written in a 17th century hand. With 3 heraldic crosses showing the coats of arms of the Teutonic Order (a black cross) and 4 drawings showing costumes of several members of the order, all executed in watercolours with some albumen highlights. 20th century calf, blind-ruled double fillet borders on both boards, spine ruled in blind and lettered in green. Highly interesting 17th century German manuscript of the Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem, commonly known as the Teutonic or German Order. Founded in 1190, it was primarily founded as a military society with its Teutonic Knights serving crusadings Christians in the Holy Land during the Middle Ages. In time, the Order also developed into a Catholic religious institution, although it would not lose its military function until the 20th century. - The present manuscript opens with a short history of the Order, beginning with the year 1190 and ending in 1606. It continues with the statutes, divided into several chapters, which are interspersed with prayers in Latin. This combination of statutes and prayers gives evidence that the Teutonic Order was not merely a military order, but also had a strong focus on religion. This is also reflected in the liturgical calendar, which is part of a chapter of the statutes, listing the saints and their feast days as celebrated by the Order. The end of the work (fol. 125) states that Maximilian III of Austria approved the statutes. Maximilian (1558-1618) was the Grand Master of the Order from 1585 until his death. The date 1606, as well as his passing in 1618, suggest that the manuscript was written in the first quarter of the 17th century. - The last five leaves of the manuscript appear to contain the names of the Landkomturs who ruled the various bailiwicks of the Holy Roman Empire's commanderies. These Landkomturs, subordinate to the Grand Master, were very often important German noblemen. - Uncommonly for this type of text, this manuscript is illustrated: the first illustrated leaf shows three black crosses, forming the arms of the Teutonic Order, including that of the Grand Master. The Grand Master's coat of arms is a black cross with a golden cross superimposed upon it, with an imperial eagle in the centre. It continues with four illustrations showing the typical costumes of several members of the Order. The second illustration in this series shows the white overcoats bearing a black cross, such as were typically worn by the Knights since 1205. - Only a few very minor spots, overall in very good condition. According to a 21st century inscription in pencil on the first endpaper, the manuscript was formerly part of the collection of the Belgian historian and politician Philippe Kervyn de Volkaersbeke (1815-81). Altogether a rare survival, and a rich source of information on the formal organisation of the most important 17th century German Order, but also on their statutes and their religious customs and habits. The manuscript beautifully reflects the religious as well as the military character of the Teutonic Order.

This document is a death certificate which is notified to Turkish Gendarmerie Command of Bakirköy. Signed by Mazhar Osman Uzman as 'bastabip' [i.e. chief physician]. Mazhar Osman was a mental diseases specialist, physician who founded the first modern Turkish mental health hospital in Turkey. Bakirköy Psychiatric Hospital (Bakirköy Mazhar Osman Mental Health and Neurological Diseases Education and Research Hospital), is a mental health hospital of the Health Ministry located in Bakirköy district of Istanbul, Turkey. The hospital is named after Mazhar Osman, who is also considered as the founder of modern psychiatry in Turkey. It was established with the initiative of Dr. Mazhar Osman (1884-1951) and approval of Minister of Health Refik Saydam (1881-1942) in the premises of Resadiye Barracks at Bakirköy, Istanbul on October 15, 1924.

4 volumes bound in 2 (230 x 140 mm), [20], 378; [2], 210; [8], 217, [1]; 221, [1]; [2], 182, [2]pp., a couple of cont. stamps, recent half morocco, red spine labels. The celebrated Meerman Library, although rich in important printed books, is chiefly remembered as the greatest manuscript sale of the 19th century. The Meerman sale marked some of Sir Thomas Phillipps' earliest purchases. In all, he acquired no less than three-quarters of the manuscripts in this famous collection; Munby notes "the indiscriminate fury with which he beat down opposition" at the sale. In 1887, after Phillipps' death, the Meerman MSS. went to the Royal Library, Berlin. One of the outstanding catalogues of the 19th century, it lists ca. 10,000 printed books and 1,100 MSS.

'Jabi-i Waqf was a collector who was collecting revenues of waqfs in the Ottoman Empire. Mehmed Arif was one of them in the period of the rule of Sultan Abdülhamid 1. 'Edâ tezkiresi' is a summary document written between the government organs and important people in the Ottoman bureaucracy. In Ottoman scrript. 1 p. 7 lines. Letterhead 'Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Istanbul Darülfünûnu'. Dated 8 Tesrinisani [1]927. Signed as 'Darülfünûn Edebiyat Fakültesii Reisi' [i.e. President of the Istanbul University Faculty of Literature]. "Darülfünûn Kütübhâne Müdürü Fehmi Bey'e, Vazifenizdeki gayret ve faaliyetden dolayi taltifiniz lüzûmu hakkinda...". Köprülü was a highly influential Turkish sociologist, turkologist, scholar, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey. A descendant of the illustrious noble Albanian Köprülü family, whose influence in shaping Ottoman history between 1656 and 1711 surpassed even that of the House of Osman, Fuat Köprülü was a key figure in the intersection of scholarship and politics in early 20th century Turkey. Following the coup d'état in 1960 he was tried at the Yassiada trials but found not guilty. Fehmi Edhem Karatay, (1888-1968), was a Turkish / Ottoman who had important services in the establishment of modern Turkish librarianship. He was known with his very important catalogue on the printed books in Turkish with Arabic letters before Seyfettin Özege.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original autograph document signed and sealed by Mehmed Kethüdâ. (11x8,5 cm). In Ottoman script. 1 p. Five lines. Mukataa-i zemîn means the rent agreement and the rent paid when renting the land owned by the state or foundations to private individuals or institutions in the Ottoman culture. 'Mukataas'' origin goes back to the Abbasids. In the last period of Seljuks and Ilkhanids they were widely used. (Sources: Osmanli belgelerinin dili: Diplomatik by Mübahat Kütükoglu and Türkiye Diyanet Vakfi Islâm Ansiklopedisi, 'Mukâtaa' by Mehmet Genç). This document reflects the early 19th century and the late 18th century state organization of the Ottomans before Westernization, Sultan Selim III period.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original autograph letter signed by Mehmed Mesih Akyigit. 23x14,5 cm. In Ottoman script. Includes twelve lines. 1 p. Sent to an unnamed lady. Mehmed Mesih was an Ottoman / Turkish poet, the founder of 'Millî Mecmua! [i.e. National Journal]. Millî Mecmua was started to be published by Mehmed Mesih (Akyigit) in Istanbul (1 Tesrînisâni 1339/1 November 1923) immediately after the declaration of the Republic. The journal, which takes the republic and modernization as its principle, coincided with a period in which important reforms were carried out, and parallel to the developments experienced, its attitude has reached a point where reforms are defended separately from a general-framed adoption. They supported the Letter Revolution, except for Mehmed Fuad's article, which drew attention to the negative consequences of the Letter Revolution in 1928. The magazine conducted a survey on "Islam in the Face of the Turkish Revolution", and Ismail Hakki (Baltacioglu), in his response to this questionnaire, suggested a reform in religion and made some proposals such as reading the call to prayer (Ezân) in Turkish and raising the places of prostration in mosques. The editorials of the journal were originally written by Yahya Saim and Hasan Âli (Yücel), and then regularly by Mehmed Mesih. In the magazine, there are some articles such as "Translation Period" by Hüseyin Namik, who deals with the translation issue, as well as translations of the works of writers and poets such as Anatole France and Nietzche.

Mehmed Refet Ülgen, (1888-1964), was a member of parliament from Urfa city, educator (he was manager of several Turkish schools), director of Ziraat Bank.
