Der Ausschnitt behandelt Zusammensetzung und Verwendung verschiedener pflanzlicher Arzneien, darunter Acaristum, hergestellt aus Gummi arabicum, Dialibanum, beruhend auf Weihrauch, sowie das aus Schafkraut gewonnene Adrianum. - Mit kleinen Fehlstellen durch Wurmfraß.

en feuilles A) 8 lettres (7 autographes, 1 tapuscrite) adressées à Hélène Pichon dont une belle lettre du Dr André Ceillier, datée du 21 janvier (4 pp. grand in-8) : "Vous savez en quelle estime je tenais Edouard. Certes j'admirais son intelligence "si personnelle", si primesautière, si fantaisiste, ainsi que sa grande culture. Mais ce qui me remplissait d'une admiration qui confinait presque à une espèce d'effroi c'était sa sérénité, son courage aimable et souriant dans le plus affreuse des adversités. Edouard restera pour tous ceux qui l'ont compris, un être exceptionnel... presque invraisemblable... qui pourrait être qualifié de "légendaire" dans la plus belle acception du terme." Brown ink (as well as light red for rubricated terms) in an essentially drawn, compact, non-serifed Yemeni naskh calligraphy. 19th century Arabic manuscript copy of two much earlier mystical works concerning the virtues and benefits related to the knowledge and recitation of the Holy Qur'an, namely: - 1) Kitab al-Barq al-Lami wa’l-Gayt al-Hami ("The Book of the Shining Flashes and Showering Rain"), epitomizing the work of the early Islamic judge Abu Bakr al-Gassani, probably an abridged version of the "Kitab ad-Durr an-Nazim fi Fada'il al-Qur'an al-Azim" by the Yemeni mystic Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Hassab (fl. 1250s AD). - 2) Kitab Hawass Ayat min-al-Qur’an wa Fawatih al-Suwar ("The Book of Peculiarities of the Qur'anic verses and the Surahs’ overtures"), a late work by the famous Persian mystic and thinker Abu Hamid al-Gazali (d. 1111 AD), here referred to by his traditional honorific "Huggatu’l-Islam" ("Proof of Islam"). - The book contains an anthological commentary on specific Qur'anic verses (ayat) and their supposed virtues and talismanic properties. The first work’s initial chapter, e.g., deals with the virtues of those verses in the Holy Qur'an that name the Prophet (an-Nabi) Muhammad. Immediately afterwards, the Ayat al-Shifa’ (i.e., “Healing Verses”) are included. Here, they are nine Qur'anic verses deemed effective against illness if recited by a believer with pure heart. The second part of this codex quotes several Qur'anic verses suitable for specific occasions, listed after each Surah. - Dated in the first colophon, where Amr bin Abi Hurayra is mentioned, the son of a famously prolific Yemeni traditionist and hadith collector (Sunni scholars ascribed to Abu Hurayra more than 5000 hadiths). Raymond who was active during the mid 16th century was named by Paul III the official Illuminator to the Papal Court - he is the only person known to have held this position. While the manuscript reproduced here is signed only by the copyist Fredrico Mario de Pérouse the author of the essay preceding the plates makes a strong argument for Raymond's responsibility for the paintings. [Renaissance mercenaries].
Dedication manuscript for Emperor Ferdinand I, written by the provost of a Landsknecht army who fought against the Turkish troops of Sultan Soliman II between 1532 and 1552. [No place, 1560].
Folio (280 x 390 mm). German ms. on paper. German chancery cursive in brown ink with calligraphic chapter headings and initials. 28 lines, written space ruled in ink. 12 ff., 1 blank f., 83 ff., 2 blank ff. (thus complete with 190 written pages). Contemporary limp vellum with giltstamped cover borders and diagonal cross using the same roll-tools. Spine divided into six compartments by same tools and decorated with floral stamps. All edges goffered. The as yet unidentified writer of this manuscript had until 1552 served among the staff of Maurice, Elector of Saxony, and thus was one of the commanders in the Imperial Landsknecht army led by the Elector. Holding the rank of an "oberster provossen Leutnant" (head lieutenant provost), his duty had been to enforce military order among the mercenary regiment: he investigated and arrested lawbreakers; in trials he acted as prosecutor, and afterwards he executed the punishment. After the end of the campaign, the provost would no longer be protected by military law, for which reason he would usually leave the regiment early so as to escape acts of revenge by the soldiers. After more than 20 years of Imperial army service, our provost was thus without occupation or pay, and so in 1560 directly applied to the Emperor in the present, strongly autobiographical manuscript, requesting (in the 146th and final chapter) that he graciously bestow on him a benefice or sinecure ("aus lauterer genaden mit ainer genetten Pfründt oder schlechten Ofidicio oder Beneficij"). Obviously aware of the difficulties of his appeal, the author states in the preface that even if granted a personal hearing, he would hardly be permitted to present his case in such detail ("gibt ainem nit sovil audienz, biß Er sein wichtige sachen khann genuegsamblich fürbringe"), which is why he has decided on the written form. He is not a learned man, nor does he have an eloquent scholar ("ain doctor der wolreden khann") at his disposal to help him with his phrasing, but even a simple man has memory and brains enough to thus lay down his opinions. His extensive descriptions of personal involvement in important, historically documented battles against the Turks permit a precise dating of the manuscript. The writer participated in the campaign against the Raab fortress ("ungeverlich vor 8 Jahren mein gnediger Herr Herzog Moritz Curfürst [...] biß für Rab Innß Landt zue Hungern ist gezogen") and fought against the Turks at Steinfeld as early as 1532 ("bin auch dabey gewesen, wie man dazumal ein streifenden Haufen mit Türggen an der Schwarzach geschlagen hat [...] da Herr Sewastian Schertlin Obristen Leitnanbt war"). This Imperial mercenary probably remained in the regiment of the famous Landsknecht commander Sebastian Schertlin von Burtenbach (1496-1577), victor of the battle at Steinfeld and a participant in the 1527 Sack of Rome, until the mid-1540s. He also remarks on the desolate condition of the contemporary military, straightforwardly addressing the issues of corruption among the upper echelons ("wie die falschen blinden Namen C. May. so grossmechtigen schaden bringen"), poor pay ("wie die Armen Kriegsleuth über vortailt und genediget werden mit der schlechten Müntz"), and grievances regarding enlistment, food, and clothing, and advances suggestions on how to improve matters ("so man auf allen Musterungen mieglichen Vleiß fürwendt guette kriegsleuth zue bekommen"). - The manuscript begins with the index ("Register diser Oration oder Solticitation"); the counter-leaf of the first index page is glued to the vellum cover, forming the front pastedown. The index is immediately followed by the preface to the Emperor, the "Allerdurchleuchtigste Großmechtigste unnd unyberwindlichsste Erwelte Romischer Kayser aller genedigster Herr", which in turn is followed by the 146 chapters of the petition. Both the fact that the manuscript remained unsigned and also its provenance suggest that the author ultimately lacked the courage to submit to Ferdinand this manuscript, a work remarkable for its strongly autobiographical character as well as for its candid criticism of the Imperial military. - From the collection of the Austrian Minister of War, Count Theodor Baillet de Latour (1780-1848; hanged by revolutionaries), with his armorial bookplate on the front pastedown.

Halblederband der Zeit mit marmorierten Deckeln. Dreiseitiger gesprenkelter Rotschnitt. Umfangreiches, für den Eigengebrauch angelegtes und professionell genutztes privates Nachschlagewerk eines Apothekers für die Zubereitung von Hunderten von Rezepten mit knapp notierten Zutatenlisten zu meist in lateinischer und auch in deutscher Sprache benannten Mitteln. Neben medizinisch-pharmazeutischen Arzneien und Heilwässern, darunter etwa "Pulvis fumalis Berolinensis", "Spiritus Melissae compostus", "Balsam aromaticum Schenz", "Carlsbader Wasser" und "Breslauer Goldwasser", sind außerdem zahlreiche, teils auch längere Beschreibungen zur Herstellung etwa von Likören ("Churfürstl. Magen-Kräuter-Liquer"), Seifen ("Windsor Seife") und Waschpulvern, Schminken, Haarfärbemitteln, Firnissen aus Kopal (Baumharz), Lacken oder Tinten angeführt. Außerdem werden werbetaugliche Rezepte wie "Kardinal Punsch" mit Champagner genannt, gefolgt von "Aqua vitae succi pomorum" mit Bittermandeln: "2 Bouteillen Burgunder 1 Bout: Champagner, [...] Sucous citri [...] 1 Bout: Arrac [...]" (S. 173), aber auch das für den offiziellen Schriftverkehr wichtige "Rothes Siegellack" (S. 178). Gegen Ende finden sich zudem Beschreibungen speziellerer Verfahren wie "Arsenik u. Antimon-Flecken durch Joddampf zu unterscheiden". - Zu einigen Rezepten sind Quellen angegeben wie das "Berliner Jahrbuch der Pharmazie", "Erdmanns Journal für praktische Chemie" oder das "Polytechnische Central-Blatt". Die Federzeichnung zeigt eine einfache Apparatur zur Herstellung kohlensauren Wassers. - Das gedruckte alphabetische Griffregister am Ende blieb leer. Einige lose einliegende Blätter unterschiedlicher Formate mit Notizen, darunter auch Brieffragmente. Einband leicht berieben, innen etwas fleckig. Aus der Sammlung des Magdeburger Pharmazeuten (Max) Paul Manicke (1880-1968), Professor für Pharmazeutische Chemie in Leipzig, mit seinem Besitzerstempel am Vorsatzblatt und ersten Textblatt. Handliches, gut blätterbares Exemplar.

(davon 32 SS. nachgebunden mit zus. 17 SS. alphabeth. Registereinträge, meist mit Griffregister). Pergamentband der Zeit. Sehr umfangreiche Sammlung von Heilmittelrezepten eines Baders oder Feldschers (wie aus der zweiseitigen gereimten Vorrede hervorgeht). Außerdem richten sich zwischen dem mehr als 500 Rezepte umfassenden ersten Teil (SS. 1-240) und dem zweiten mit etwa 150 weiteren Rezepten (SS. 278-344), in der gleichen Handschrift, zwei Texte an diesen Berufsstand: "Fragen von der Baders Profession" (SS. 241-261) und "Frag Stuckh, wie man sich nach denen Fragen freintlich beantworten soll" (SS. 265-270). Hier werden auch frühneuzeitliche anatomische Fragestellungen erläutert, beispielsweise zur Lage und Beschaffenheit des Gehirns: Dieses bestehe aus drei Teilen und sei in absteigender Größe für Vernunft, Gedächtnis und Vorstellungskraft verantwortlich und in seiner Substanz "weiss und weich". Auf die Arzneimittel folgen Verzeichnisse der Apothekerzeichen (mit einem zusätzlichen Griffregister versehen), Apothekergewichte und Listen unterschiedlicher Wasser und Öle sowie von Pestkräutern und -wurzeln. Am Ende finden sich ein Inhaltsverzeichnis mit alphabetischem Griffregister und ein Verzeichnis lateinischer Pflanzennamen. - Belegt wird der Gebrauchswert des Rezeptbuchs für Bader in einzelnen Überschriften der Rezepte, wie "Ein anders von Joseph Mayr Bader" oder "Wan ein Bader die Aderen nit finden kann". Eine Fülle einfacher Hilfs- und Heilmittel wird vorgestellt, etwa "Wunden zu trukhnen", "Pflaster zu alten Schäden", "Die Milben im Haar zu tödten" oder "Meiß oder Fluigen zu vertreiben". Auch die Behandlung schwerer Erkrankungen wie Gelbsucht, Pest oder Krebs wird diskutiert. Besonders interessant - und giftig - ist eine krebshemmende Salbe mit Bleiweiß "für den Krepss das Er nit umbfresse"; auch jenem, der "das Wasser nit abschlagen khan", soll geholfen werden können. Manche Mittel sind für "Mensch und Vich" geeignet, andere sollen gegen Zauberei helfen, wie etwa das Tragen einer Wurzel von Eisenkraut. - Auf die Herkunft aus Tirol weist neben der mundartlichen Färbung etwa ein Rezept für einen "Wundt Tranckh, so Herzog Sigmund selbsten gebraucht". An einigen Stellen wurden Rezepte von anderen Händen, wohl wenig später, ergänzt. - Oben teilweise mit leichtem Wasserrand, etwas braun- und teilweise leicht fingerfleckig. Der Einband stärker braunfleckig bzw. gebräunt, mit einigen kleineren und einem größeren Wurmloch im Deckel, einem kleinen Wurmloch im Rücken und wenigen größere Einschnitten im Hinterdeckel, bestoßen und berieben.

[Roadbuilding in Tuscany].
Nuova strada rotabile dalle saline di Volterra a Capannoli. [Communità di Lajatico, ca. 1830].
2 volumes of hand-drawn and coloured constructional drawings. Small folio (280 x 362 mm each). 4 cloth-backed folding plates (numbered I-IV), calligraphic half-title, 20 pp. of designs on 10 leaves. 5 full-page designs on individual plates (numbered II-VI; lacking the first), calligraphic half-title. Both volumes bound in contemporary quarter leather with green marbled boards; handwritten blue cover labels. A set of two ledgers of construction designs for the building of the new carriageway between Volterra and Capannoli in the Province of Pisa, a project which had been authorized by the government in 1825. The course of the road largely coincides with today's Strada Regionale 439. The first ledger (entitled "4. Disegni della Sezione FG. Comunità di Lajatico") contains a map of the 6th section of the projected road, which reaches from the Foscecchia river to the Sterza river, along the banks of the Era and past Lajatico; two cross-section profiles covering the entire distance of this section (together ca. 280 cm in length, with precise measurements given throughout); a cross-section of the bridge across the Foscia river, and a total of 79 lateral profiles of the road construction throughout the various points of the hilly terrain. The second ledger (entitled "7. Carta del generale andamento, profilo e ponticelli") shows the road design in a lateral section as well as designs for four different types of bridges of various heights. - The construction of the carriageway took place from the late 1820s onwards, and similar technical drawings survive in the Archivio di Stato di Pisa (collected in the "Disegni degli ingegneri della Camera di Sopraintendenza Comunitativa di Pisa"). - A fragmentary survival of the original ensemble, which must have encompassed at least ten volumes; but attractively preserved.
