‎The Works of Herman Melville‎

‎London Bombay Sydney: Constable and Company Ltd 1922-1924. The Standard Edition complete. Limited to 750 sets including the first publication of one of Melville's masterworks the novella Billy Budd which was discovered in manuscript among Melville's papers at the time. BAL 13680 noting that the volume containing The Confidence-Man also contains a bibliography of the first editions of Melville's prose works by Michael Sadleir. BAL entries also exist for individual volumes which include first editions: Billy Budd BAL 13682 noting the contents which represent "pieces here first located in book form" including the title story which was "never before published"; Poems: Battle-Pieces John Marr and Other Sailors Timoleon and Miscellaneous Poems BAL 13683 noting that the "Author's Note" p. 162 "Miscellaneous Poems" pp. 297-349 and "At the Hostelry" pp. 351-434 first appear here in book form. Regarding the format of the Constable set BAL specifies: "LP cloth: blue. Maroon-coated endpapers. Top edges gilt." descriptions to which the present set conforms. We are not aware however of another variant printing of the set. The Standard Edition was published episodically with the inevitable consequence that complete sets are rare. Seven of the volumes in the present set are in their original dust jackets which are extremely rare and fragile having been printed on heavy acidic paper. The dust jacketed volumes include the first four volumes: Typee Omoo and Mardi Vols. III-IV and Vols. X-XII: The Piazza Tales Israel Potter and The Confidence Man. Remnants of other dust jackets chiefly inside flaps are included in a few of the other volumes. The set is in exceptionally fine condition with all hinges firm and tight and with no fading to the spines and no wear or tear. 16 volumes tall 8vo original cloth t.e.g. dust jackets. The set is in exceptionally fine condition with all hinges firm and tight and with no fading to the spines and no wear or tear. Constable and Company Ltd unknown books‎

‎TYPEE A REAL ROMANCE OF THE SOUTH SEAS . WITH BIOGRAPHICAL AND CRITICAL INTRODUCTION .‎

‎New York: United States Book Company 1892. xxxvi389pp. plus portrait and plate. Blue gray pictorial cloth stamped in black and brown. Armorial bookplate of Robert Henry Herbert "Ung Je Serviray" with clipped manuscript gift inscription affixed below illegible small nicks and frays at spine ends two blank lower fore-corners neatly clipped but a good sound copy. The first posthumous printing of the text one of four of Melville's proseworks prepared for reprinting by the United States Book Company by Arthur Stedman and of those four the only one to include an Introduction by Stedman. Melville authority Merton Sealts has called the Introduction "the best short Life of Melville written in the nineteenth century." Stedman commissioned La Farge's imaginative depiction of Fayaway which appears before the first page of text. The four titles appeared in several different colors of cloth. OMOO and TYPEE shared the same cover illustration. These editions are not uncommon but they are difficult to find in agreeable edition. United States Book Company hardcover books‎

‎White Jacket; or The World in a Man-of-War‎

‎Quality Paperback Book Club 1996. Book Club BCE/BOMC. Trade Paperback. Very Good. Ink name and number on quote page a few minor spots to top page ridge. 1996 Trade Paperback. We have more books available by this author!. xi 504 pp. "Based on Melville's experiences as a common seaman aboard the frigate USS United States from 1843 to 1844 and stories that other sailors told him the novel is severely critical of virtually every aspect of American naval life and thus qualifies as Melville's most politically strident work. At the time though the one thing that journalists and politicians focused on in the novel was its graphic descriptions of flogging and the horrors caused by its arbitrary use; in fact because Harper & Bros. made sure the book got into the hands of every member of Congress White-Jacket was instrumental in abolishing flogging in the U.S. Navy forever. Melville scholars also acknowledge the huge number of parallels between White-Jacket and Billy Budd and view the former as a rich source for possible interpretations of the latter. The symbolism of the color white introduced in this novel in the form of the narrator's jacket is more fully expanded upon in Moby-Dick where it becomes an all-encompassing "blankness." The mixture of journalism history and fiction; the presentation of a sequence of striking characters; the metaphor of a sailing ship as the world in miniature Quality Paperback Book Club paperback books‎

‎WHITE JACKET; OR THE WORLD IN A MAN-OF-WAR‎

‎London: Richard Bentley 1853. Two volumes. Modern three quarter calf and marbled boards in 19th century style gilt labels edges rough trimmed. But for some very isolated minor foxing and a few negligible marginal smudges a very good set. No half-titles are called for. First edition second issue with the cancel titles dated "1853." The original London printing which preceded the U.S. edition by two months consisted of only one thousand sets. As a consequence of their tepid sales in 1853 Bentley bound up remaining sets of sheets of this title of REDBURN and of THE WHALE in several forms of remainder cloth bindings including two-and three- volumes in one format with cancel titles bearing the new date. In the remainder format both due to the somewhat smaller quantities issued thus as well as to the exceptionally vulnerable multi-volume in one format they are much less often seen than the primary issues. ‎Melville Herman. WHITE-JACKET; OR THE WORLD IN A MAN-OF-WAR. London: Richard Bentley 1853. 2 vols. First English edition second issue with cancel title-pages. Later three-quarter dark blue morocco raised bands gilt. This English edition is quite uncommon and like Bentley's editions of THE WHALE and REDBURN unsold copies were re-issued in 1853 with cancel title-pages. The English edition consisted of 1000 copies compared to 4524 of Harper's American printing. Fine set of Melville's highly symbolic fifth novel that depicted the harsh and inhumane treatment of sailors at sea. The last copy of the first English edition to appear at auction was December 2003 $21000 in worn cloth pages loose ex-library etc. NW-Newberry V:407-8 444-5. BAL 13662-note. hardcover books‎
