Die Sammlung schließt mit einer Analyse von La Fontaines brillanter Versfassung der Petronius-Geschichte ?Die Witwe von Ephesus". / This book, a close examination of some works of two major Seventeenth-Century French poets, Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux and Jean de La Fontaine, strives to illuminate their indebtedness to the writings of certain Latin authors. In seven chapters, the influence of Horace on Boileau's satires and epistles is studied. We also observe Boileau's familiarity with Persius' satires and with one of Martial's most famous epigrams. Three chapters demonstrate the fabulist La Fontaine's employment of material from Horace. The influence of Ovid's Metamorphoses is clear in La Fontaine's retelling of two of the finest stories that have come down to us from antiquity, "Philemon and Baucis" and "Pyramus and Thisbe". First edition of the French crime fiction duo's third novel preceding the British edition by two years and the American by three of the roman noir that was turned into the 1958 Hollywood classic Vertigo starring James Stewart and Kim Novak directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Octavo original wrappers. Presentation copy inscribed by both authors on the half-title page "A Madame Cordroc 'h avec notre gratitude et l'homage de notre deferente sympathie Th. Narcejac Pierre Boileau." Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. In very good condition. The story concerns a former detective who suffers from vertigo. He is hired to follow the wife of a friend who is puzzled by her strange behavior. The detective becomes obsessed with the woman eventually falling in love with her but unable to explain her strange trances and her belief in a previous life. When she falls to her death from a tower he is unable to save her due to his fear of heights. He experiences a psychotic break. After his partial recovery he encounters a woman who is nearly the image of his dead love and he becomes obsessed with her. In the end she turns out to be the same person he was in love with--an actress who was hired by his friend in order to hide the murder of his actual wife. It was the basis for the 1958 Alfred Hitchcock film Vertigo starring James Stewart and Kim Novak. Attracting significant scholarly criticism it replaced Citizen Kane as the best film ever made in the 2012 British Film Institute's Sight & Sound critics' poll. It has appeared repeatedly in polls of the best films by the American Film Institute including a 2007 ranking as the ninth-greatest American movie of all-time. unknown books‎

An absolutely pristine extraordinarily well-preserved example. <br/><br/>"Celle Qui N'Etait Plus" was the writing team's first effort basis for Henri-Georges Clouzot's 1955 masterpiece "Les Diaboliques" or Diabolique starring Simone Signoret. Before Clouzot had even finished making "Diabolique" Alfred Hitchcock had secured the rights to the duo's forthcoming book which would become the basis for his masterpiece "Vertigo." A cornerstone film source title only the second book signed by either of the authors we have ever encountered. Beyond even this however clearly one of the first copies of the title to have been handled by anyone. <br/><br/>Pages uncut. Boileau was one of the earliest authors to connect the ancient religious practice directly to erotic motivations and concludes with a medical assessment of such deviancy including a final proverb: "Le foüet est pour le Cheval le mords pour l'Asne & la verge pour le dos de l'Insensé."<br>    Although some sources claim Boileau translated his own text into French the BNF considers that a false attribution and credits Abbé François Granet with both editing and translating the text. This version by Dutch printer du Sauzet features a title-page printed in red and black and simple but elegant typesetting.<br>    Binding: Contemporary calf spine with gilt-stamped title and date gilt-ruled raised bands and gilt-stamped compartment decorations; covers framed in triple gilt fillets turn-ins with a gilt roll.
