‎DURANTY - TABARY (Louis-Edouard)‎ ‎Duranty (1833-1880). Portrait de Duranty en frontispice. Première étude importante sur l’auteur. Avec, pp. 181 à 224 la bibliographie de Duranty par PARTURIER.DURANTY (Louis-Emmanuel-Edmond)Une légende – née d’un article de Ph. Burty – faisait de Duranty un bâtard de Mérimée. Mais le mystère de sa naissance est aujourd’hui éclairci. Fruit des amours secrètes d’une certaine Emilie Lacoste et d’un auditeur du Conseil d’Etat Louis Edmond Anthoine, il naquit à Paris en 1833. Duranty est un fleuron de la bohème, un pilier de la Brasserie Andler (rue Hautefeuille) où Courbet tenait ses assises depuis 1848. Après une brève carrière administrative, il prit la plume qu’il trempa dans l’encrier réaliste. Entré dans le groupe de Champfleury il fonda avec Jules Assézat et Thulié la revue Réalisme qui soutenait l’ « Ecole » de Courbet. Seuls six numéros furent publiés et la revue s’éteignit dès 1857. Malassis fit paraître en 1860 le premier roman de Duranty, mais la carrière romanesque de ce réaliste magistral tourna court. La Cause du beau Guillaume (1862) ne se vendit point et les Combats de Françoise Duquesnoy fut publié à compte d’auteur. Grâce à l’appui de Zola Duranty publia encore deux recueils de nouvelles. Parallèlement il avait dirigé le théâtre de marionnettes des Tuileries dont il mit à jour le répertoire en 1872. Mais Duranty fut surtout un remarquable critique d’art. On lui doit dans Paris Journal (1869-1872), dans la Gazette des Beaux-Arts (1872) et dans Beaux-Arts illustrés (1876) de remarquables études sur l’impressionnisme naissant qu’il rattachait au réalisme.Les romans de Duranty ont paru au mauvais moment, trop tôt après les succès de Champfleury et trop tôt aussi avant les Rougon-Macquart de Zola. « Alors que Champfleury… représente le réalisme humoristique à la Dickens, dit Claude Pichois (Lettres à Baudelaire, p. 145), Duranty représente le réalisme dur ; sa technique – la restriction du champ notamment – annonce celle du nouveau roman ».Il faudra attendre 1942 pour lire Henriette Gérard dans une nouvelle édition (préfacée par Paulhan). Duranty mourut en 1880. En 1913 Pierre Martino lui consacra une notice chaleureuse dans Le Roman Réaliste sous le Second Empire, pp. 136 à 153. This volume deals with works published between 1650 and 1880. 1180 books are described in detail, 1168 illustrations show title pages or illustrations from the works. The author analyses and classifies the various editions of the great old texts, in particular 'Académie des Dames', 'Thérèse Philosophe', 'Histoire de dom B*' or 'Pucelle d'Orléans', each of which went through more than thirty new editions and were the most widely read erotic texts in the 18th and 19th centuries. Other important works include 'Le Libertin de Qualité, l'Arétin Français, La Fille de Joye, Parapilla' and 'La Foutromanie'. Despite their later success, the Marquis de Sade's texts such as 'Justine' or 'La Philosophie dans le Boudoir' were less published and less read than, for example, Andréa de Nerciat's 'Félicia ou mes Fredaines', which went through 17 editions. 'Les Tableaux des Moeurs du Temps' and 'L'Antijustine', two important titles of erotic literature, only went through 5 editions. The author also attempts to update and complete the list of publications by publishers based in Brussels at the end of the 19th century. Jules Gay's publications were often copied, and a number of the editions attributed to Poulet Malassis are nothing but pirated copies.
