Boccaccio, Giovanni.
Il Filocopo […] Di nuovo riveduto, corretto, & alla sua vera lettione ridotto da M. Francesco Sansovino. Venice, [device of Domenico Giglio] (colophon: Francesco Rampazetto, 1554).
Small 8vo (15 x 11 cm). "390" (= 380) ff. With Giglio's woodcut device (a bird with a scorpion in its beak above a pot with "DG" above 2 winged sea-goats, with motto "non sine quare sic facio" and "N.S.C.C.F.") on the title-page, 6 woodcut decorated initials (3 series) plus 2 repeats. Set in Aldine-style italic types (with upright capitals) with incidental roman. Contemporary limp vellum, sewn on 3 alum-tawed supports laced through the joints, with manuscript title down the spine in rotunda gothic lettering (6 mm x-height) with decorated capitals: "Filocopo d[e]l Boccaccio". Second Sansovino edition of Boccaccio's first important work, Il Filocolo (here Filocopo), a prose romance written ca. 1334-1336, about twenty years before the Decameron. Boccaccio reworked the 12th-century French love story of Floire (Florio), muslim Prince of Andalusia, and Blancheflor (Biancifiore), the orphaned daughter of his mother's Roman Christian lady-in-waiting. They grow up together in the royal household, but when they fall in love his parents try to break up the romance by selling her to merchants who will take her to Alexandria to join a harem. Florio, under the pseudonym Filocopo, rescues and marries her. He converts to Christianity and they return home where he ascends the throne and his people embrace Christianity. Boccaccio introduced many new elements into the story and told it with his usual flare for (often risqué) humour. It served as inspiration for writers around the world from Chaucer to Keats, and Boccaccio himself further developed several episodes for stories in his Decameron. - Francesco Sansovino (1521-83) had produced the first variorum edition of the Decameron in 1546 and then turned his editorial scholarship to Il Filocolo, beginning with Gaetano's text (editions in 1527 and 1538). He dedicated his first edition, published at Venice by Rapirio and Cesano in 1551, to Vitellozzo Vitelli. The main text of the present edition is nearly a page for page reprint of the 1551 edition and includes its dedication. Further editions of Sansovino's text appeared in 1564, 1575 and 1612. - With 2 early owners' inscriptions on the title-page, both struck through and part of one abraded. With a small hole in the title-page and the corners of a few leaves dog-eared, but otherwise internally in very good condition. The binding is worn, but the lovely manuscript title on the spine remains clear. Second edition of the best Renaissance redaction of Boccaccio's important, influential and entertaining first major work. Edit 16, 6334. Gay/Lemonnyer, col. 726. USTC 814845. Cf. Gamba, Italiana letteratura 198 cr. (other eds.). For the text: Kirkham et al., eds., Boccaccio: a critical guide, pp. 87-93. Marrone, Encyclopedia of Italian literary studies, pp. 252-253.

Boccaccio, Giovanni.
Laberinto d'amore [...] con una epistola à Messer Pino de Rossi confortatoria del medesimo autore. (Florence), [heirs of Filippo Giunta the elder], (1525).
8vo. 72 ff. Contemporary full vellum with remains of a giltstamped spine label. All edges coloured. Second Giunta edition of the "Corbaccio", which first appeared in 1487 and was first (and similarly anonymously) printed by Filippo Giunta in 1516: "una materiale ristampa di questa edizione, fatta pagina a pagina e riga a riga" (Gamba); "ces deux editions sont assez rares" (Brunet). This bawdy satire, supposedly based on a Florentine widow who turned down Boccaccio, was as popular as it remains controversial for its scurrilous and misogynistic elements. The text is prefixed by a letter from Filippo Giunta's son Bernardo "a'gli amatori della lingua Toscana"; leaves 57ff. contain Boccaccio's letter to Pino di Rossi. - Provenance: with engraved bookplate of Lord Robert Spencer (1747-1831), British Whig politician, to front pastedown. The youngest son of Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough, the hero of the Seven Years' War, Lord Robert was the nephew of the politician John Spencer, 5th paternal great grandfather of Diana, Princess of Wales, and brother of George Spencer, the great-great-great grandfather of Sir Winston Churchill. - Occasional light brownstaining and slight traces of worming to the blank lower margins of the first two leaves, but altogether a well-preserved, charming and authentic example of this rare and desirable edition. Edit 16, CNCE 6267. Adams B 2182. Renouard Supplément, p. XLIX, no. 79. Brunet I, 1016. Gamba 203 (note). Panzer VII, 40f., 219. Bandini, Juntarum Typographiae Annales II, 199. OCLC 612050557. Cf. Hayn/Gotendorf I, 398 (citing later Italian editions only). Not in BM-STC Italian.

Bonaventura (Saint).
Die Legend des heyligen Vatters Francisci. Nach der Beschreybung des Engelischen Lerers Bonaventure. Nuremberg, Hieronymus Höltzel for Caspar Rosentaler in Schwaz, 7 April 1512.
4to (158 x 198 mm). (106) ff. Title-page with large woodcut vignette of St. Francis receiving the stigmata, 57 woodcuts in total (including duplicates) by Wolf Traut, 5 of which full-page, all with fine contemporary hand-coloring. Contemporary full pigskin over wooden boards with bevelled edges, panelled and decorated in blind. Spine with raised bands in four compartments. Remains of clasps. Edges stained blue. The rare first German edition of Bonaventura's life of St Francis ("Legenda major beati Francisci"), printed by Höltzel on behalf and at the expense of the Tyrolean benefactor of the Franciscan church in Schwaz, Caspar Rosenthaler. - This volume, a remarkable copy in contemporary colour, is also the first to incorporate Wolf Traut's striking woodcuts, ranking among the artist's masterpieces (while some are dated, none are signed). The Nuremberg artist, a student of Albrecht Dürer's, completed 51 woodcuts for this work, which would prove to be his greatest contribution to illustrated books. Traut was in Dürer's workshop from 1505, or possibly earlier, when he produced woodcuts for Pinder's "Der beschlossen Gart des Rosenkrantz Marie". - Binding somewhat rubbed and bumped. F3 and V1 with marginal repairs, L1, O1, and T4 torn and restored with loss of text. Some minor spotting or staining, one or two instances of marginal worming. - Provenance: Paul Kramer (contemporary ink signature and motto, "Omnia cum deo", to front free endpaper). Virtue and Cahill Library of Portsmouth Cathedral (oversized bookplate to front pastedown, with number 8363), dispersed in 1941 after German bombing and subsequently preserved in the Presbytery at Winchester; deaccessioned by the Bishop and Cathedral Chapter "for better care and to the advantage of scholars" in 1967 (stamped over bookplate). - A masterpiece of German book illustration, rarely encountered complete even in an uncoloured state. VD 16, B 6559. BM-STC German 140. Dodgson I, 502f., 1. Not in Adams. Cf. Einhorn, "Die Holzschnitte des Wolf Traut zur 'Legend des heyligen vatters Francisci' nach Bonaventura, Nürnberg 1512", in: Franziskanische Studien 60 (1978), pp. 1-24.

BONAVENTURA:
(1) ESTIMULO DE AMOR DE SANT BU?AU?TURA. NUEUAM?TE IMP?SSO & CORREGIDO. (2) SOLILO[QI]UO: DE SANT BUENAUENTURA.
2 exceedingly rare early Spanish prints by Miguel de Eguía of writings by Saint Bonaventure. – Author, Content: Present volume contains early Spanish translations of (1) the »Stimulus Amoris« (13th ct., The String of Love) and (2) the »Soliloquium de quatuor mentalibus exercitiis« (1259/60, Soliloquy [i.e. monologue] About the Four Spiritual Exercises), two devotional works written by or in case of (1) attributed to Saint Bonaventure, [i.e. Giovanni Fidanza, 1221-74], a Cardinal and head of the Minor friars, who became one of the most influential theologians and philosophers of the medieval ages. – Printer: Both volumes of present Sammelband were printed in the print shops of Miguel de Eguía (1495-1546) in Logroño and Alcalá, one of the foremost and progressive Spanish printers of his time, a publisher of Eramus. Eguía's prints are known for their distinctive type setting in puristic gothic and round typefaces, their illustrative and ornamental wood-cut initials of an artistic nature (of which 4 and 8 resp. are set here), the use of red and black inks and the good quality of the paper. Moreover Eguía was famous for renewing Spanish printing by using Renaissance-style architectural borders. Present wood-cut title-pages are a good examples: »Estimulo de Amor« consists of a central typographic title printing with a from of emblematic illustrations combined with floral ornaments, »Soliloquio« additionally incorporates a portrait of the reading Bonaventure. – Condition: (1) Fragments of partly erased former owner's remarks as well as of erased owner's stamp on l. ai; (2) Leave g4 (printer's blank) missing; pp. aiiir, a(6)v, br, biiiv, c(7)r, e(5)r, f(3)r and f(5) with very few underlinings and marginal notes. Some leaves with slight foxing and little water stains at margins. – Rarity, Holdings: Although incunables and early prints of Bonaventure's works in the original Latin and in translation, as well as prints by the Spanish master Eguía are frequently traded at auction, no auction results at all are available for present editions, according to RBH and JBP/JAP/APO. – As of August 6th 2022 USTC, OCLC/WorldCat, KVK and viaLibri Library Search locate only 6 holdings in institutional holdings worldwide for (1), at Barcelona (Bibl. de Catalunya, missing title leave, Prov: Bibl. Marès), Evora (Bibl. Publica), Lisboa (BNP), Madrid (BNE), Oviedo (UL), València (UL) and London (BL), i.e. the only copy outside the Iberian peninsula. Only 5 copies are known for (2), at Barcelona (CRAI), Madrid (BNE [2 copies], Bibl. Islámica) and Sevilla (Bibl. Capitular Y Colombina), with no copy outside spain. – Reference: (1) USTC, no. 335139; CCPB 119730-4; BCMarès I 161; BLC 37, 64; Heredia 3928; Salva 3863; Palau 290249; Porbase 224252; Wilkinson (Iberian Books) 2110. – (2) USTC, no. 335148; CCBE S. BOUGEANT (Guillaume-Hyacinthe)
A Philosophical Amusement upon the Language of Beasts. Written originally in French, by Father Bougeant, a famous Jesuit; now confined at La Fleche, on Account of this Work.
First Dublin Edition, no half-title, with the final advertisement leaf, 62 [2]pp., disbound. Father Bougeant was born at Quimper in Brittany, in 1690. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1706, taught classics in the College of Caen and Nevers and lived for a number of years in Paris until his death in 1743. His "Amusement Philosophique sur le Language des Bestes," published in 1737, became a cause of considerable embarrassment to him, and resulted in a brief exile from Paris. The work was controversial in that it considered whether animals had a soul and a language, and if this could be viewed as a sign of reason. He approaches this subject and reduces it to an absurd one, concluding that it does not represent a threat to religion and grants souls to animals which would inhabit their bodies like a punishment.

Boyle, T C - SIGNED FIRST PRINTING - HARRY & MEGHAN's NEW HOME!
Riven Rock - FEATURING HARRY & MEGHAN'S NEW HOME!
Bloomsbury London 1998 Harry and Meghan have bought the Santa Barbara home that was the subject of this superb novel Riven Rock. The intriguing tale of a trailblazing women s rights activist who married the youngest son and heir to a vast family fortune may be of great interest to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Not only does the relationship between Katharine and Stanley McCormick draw the odd parallel with their own but the royal couple s new Santa Barbara home is built on what was once McCormick family land. The fabled 87-acre estate in Montecito California boasts a fascinating history - the place where Mr McCormick was confined for 40 years due to mental illness while a string of eminent psychiatrists were employed in a desperate but ultimately fruitless bid to cure him. The 19th century family saga is documented in this 1998 novel Riven Rock by the award winning American author TC Boyle. The villa also featured in an episode of The Sopranos. Brach, Pierre de (Reinhold Dezeimeris, editor)
Oeuvres poetiques de Pierre de Brach, Sieur de la Motte Montussan (including Oeuvres Inedites)
THE ONLY COPY PRINTED ON VELLUM OF THIS IMPORTANT AND BEAUTIFUL PUBLICATION. Two volumes, complete. FIRST AND ONLY COMPLETE EDITION, and first and only critical edition of the works of Pierre de Brach, an important 16th-century poet from Bordeaux, a close friend of Montaigne and many other key French Renaissance literary figures. ABOUT HALF THE WORKS ARE PUBLISHED HERE FOR THE FIRST TIME: Dezeimeris had discovered an important manuscript which included many texts thought lost forever, including the "Tombeau et regrets funebres sur la mort d'Aymee" and the second book of the "Amours". Extensive scholarly apparatus, notes, and index. Edition limited to 260 copies, of which this is THE UNIQUE COPY beautifully printed (by Gounouilhou of Bordeaux) on FINE VELLUM, with numerous woodcut ornaments, headpieces, and tailpieces. Title-pages printed in red and black, with large woodcut printer's device. Text in Italic type, notes in Roman type. Two engraved portraits on chine applique and two wood-engraved plates. 4to. Attractively bound in contemporary half red morocco. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Minimal traces of wear to bindings, else a fine set. Vicaire I, 919 (citing this copy); Brunet supp. I, 167 (citing this copy): "Belle publication."
