[Printing] : [Food]
Folder of Sample Lithograph Labels for a Depression-era Line of Canned Foods
San Francisco California: Schmidt Lithograph Co. ca. 1930. 15" x 5 1/2" thin card folder with two flexible brass binding tacks holding 64 paper label samples of various dimensions the largest being about 13" x 4 1/2". Lengthy previous owner's inscription on ink to exterior of folder dated 12/4/82. Trace damptstaining at folder edges labels well preserved. All very good. <br/><br/>A folder of sample labels in an envelope of the Schmidt Lithograph Co. of San Francisco representing a line of canned foods and with a lenghty inscription attributed to a "W.L. Morgan" and dated December 4 1982: <br /> <br />"Samples of can labels : - Originals / Uncle Bill's Canned Vegetables by Palmer Chase : Had a good start. / Palmer walked off of the job ; No reason except women. Several of his / gang followed divorces etc." <br /> <br />I am unable to locate anything on the "Uncle Bill's" line in typical reference. Though Schmidt was a prominent 19th and 20th Century lithographer prolific in the food label space with facilities in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Archived newspaper content seems to identify Palmer Chase as having owned a food packaging firm based in the Bay Area Richmond during the 1930's coupled with design elements here seems to provide a likely date for production of these labels. [Printing]. Parkhill, Charles Lothrop Dexter.
Late 19th - Early 20th Century Printer's Scrapbook.
Boston 1888 - 1917. Good. 9" x 7-7/8". 50 leaves of which 30 have been used. Stab-bound green and brown paper-covered boards white title label on burgundy paper burgundy paste-downs. Contains 53 clippings plus 21 other pieces: an S. J. Parkhill & Co. business card an insurance document for Charles L. D. Parkhill several printed announcements and poems a three page typed poem on the back of Parkhill letterhead flyers etc. Light wear; paper of front joint cracked; leaves and clippings toned and somewhat brittle with occasional short tears and chips to edges; tears and wear to some laid in material. One leaf shows evidence of an item having been removed. A scrapbook apparently compiled by printer Charles L. D. Parkhill the son of Samuel James Parkhill who founded S. J. Parkhill & Co. Printers in Boston in 1875; by the 1910s the firm was primarily known for its publication of textbooks. The scrapbook is a compilation of clippings printed matter and a few holograph scraps affixed tipped-in and laid into the album many of which are notices of the death or bankruptcy notices of other local printers and publishers: Louis Prang Edgar O. Silver William E. Cochrane employed by Prang Dana Estes Moses King Josiah Stearns Cushing and of course Samuel James Parkhill. Other Parkhill material includes a business flyer for James Duffy an employee of Parkhill & Co. as well as a newspaper clipping of his death notice and a newspaper clipping announcing the marriage of another Parkhill employee.Several newspaper clippings pertain specifically to Charles L. D. Parkhill which with the aforementioned Parkhill material and the insurance document lead us to believe the scrapbook was created by Charles Parkhill. In 1911 he was arrested for speeding and he appears to have enjoyed a fast lifestyle in other areas as well: several non-printing related items attest to his love for horseracing drinking literature and dogs not necessarily in that order.Overall an interesting and somewhat morbid collection of material by one printer about his fellows in early 20th century Boston. hardcover

[Printing] Thomas, Isaiah
The History of Printing in America with a Biography of Printers and an Account of Newspapers. In Two Volumes Complete
Albany NY: Joel Munsell 1874. Quarter Leather. Very Good binding. Octavo. lxxxvii 1 423; viii 666 2 47 index pp. frontis plate. Second edition with the author's corrections and additions and a catalogue of American publications prior to 1776. Volumes V and VI of Archaeologia Americana. Transactions and Collections of the American Antiquarian Society. In modern morocco-backed marbled paper boards. Light wear to the bindings; fore-edge of the preliminaries are lightly chipped; a few signatures sit proud; contents toned. Pencil marginalia throughout offering corrections and elaboration. We have not assessed the accuracy of these notations but they certainly appear precise and informed. A nice set. <br /> <br /> Originally issued in 1810 this is certainly the most important history of colonial and federal era American printers. The cataloguers for the Grolier Club exhibition called it "the recognized authority on printing in the United States from 1640-1800. Much of the material which is contains can be found nowhere else" Grolier American 100 29.<br /> <br /> In this second edition the alternations and additions generally are from a corrected manuscript held by the American Antiquarian Society and from which Munsell worked. One omission of note is Thomas's history of printing in Europe that was part of the first edition. Additions of note not by Thomas are Benjamin Franklin Thomas's memoir of Isaiah Thomas; an essay on printing in South America by John R. Bartlett; and Haven's 'Catalogue of Publications in what is now the United States prior to the Revolution of 1775—6.' This Sabin tells us "had its nucleus in notes by Thomas was also issued separately and is usually known as 'Haven's list.' The death of the latter in the Civil War prevented its final revision" Sabin 95406. Howes T-168 "aa"; Bigmore and Wyman III p. 9-10; Streeter 4395. Joel Munsell unknown

Besatzung. Ein kurtzer bericht, wie Stätt, Schlösser oder Flecken, mit kriegs volck sollen besetzt sein, daß sie sich vor dem Feinde erhalten mögen. Frankfurt, (Feyerabend & Hüter, 1564).
Folio (189 x 290 mm). XVI, (1) pp. With large woodcut title illustration and 6 woodcut illustrations in the text, all by Jost Amman. Modern marbled boards with cloth spine, new endpapers. All edges red. Second independent edition of this "short account of the manner how towns, castles, and other places are to be garrisoned with soldiers in such a way that they may withstand the enemy". Formerly attributed erroneously to Fronsperger's "Kriegßbuch", from which Amman's fine title woodcut was taken, the treatise was first published privately in 1560 as the 8th volume of the monumental military encyclopedia by the imperial field marshal and fortification architect Reinhard count Solms (1491-1562); Feyerabend issued it separately in 1563. The text woodcuts show siege engines and instruments. - Leaves XIII and XIIII transposed. Colophon leaf repaired at foot and spotted. - Provenance: the library of Heinrich Stiebel, Frankfurt (his bookplate on pastedown, numbered 5272). Later in the collection of Thomas Fremantle, 3rd Baron Cottesloe (1862-1956), commander of the Territorial Army and president of the Society for Army History Research (purchased from Sotheran's, December 1936). [Margarita philosophica.] Aepitoma omnis phylosophiae. Alias margarita phylosophica tractans de omni genere scibili. Cum additionibus: que in aliis non habentur. (Strasbourg, Johann [Reinhard, gen.] Grüninger, 23 February 1504).
4to. [287] ff. (B-C6, D-E8, F28 [!], G8, H6, J8, K4, L-N8, O6, P-Q8, R6, S-V8, X6, Y-Z8, a8, b4, c7 [6+1: includes "c medium" between c2 and c3], d-e8, f6, g-h8, i4, k-l8, m6, n-p8; published thus without a gathering A, agreeing with ÖNB copy). With title woodcut, 8 pp. of musical notes, and numerous (32 large, 12 almost full-page, and hundreds of small) woodcuts in the text (wanting the woodcut map and the folding plate on musical theory). Contemp. wooden boards with blindstamped pigskin spine and one central brass clasp. The first encyclopedic work in modern European history. The first Strasbourg edition, a revision of the Freiburg first edition published the previous year. In the manner of a dialogue between teacher and student, the book discusses the sciences and liberal arts, including music (with notes), medicine, geometry, surveying, etc. Grüninger modified several woodcuts from the first edition and added others; he also incorporated a brief Hebrew grammar by Conrad Pellicanus, making this the first Strasbourg-printed book to include Hebrew type (cf. Schmidt). - Among the illustrations are a map of the world on f. c6r and many charming miniature woodcuts in the margins. Occasionally, details of the initials (F11r) and woodcuts (e.g., F18v, c2v [salamander], and c3v [dragon]) have been coloured in red. Several contemporary underlinings and marginalia, including a lengthy note on earthquakes that supplements the printed text by additional sources, such as the Arabian astronomer Abu Ma'shar: "Erdbebung bedeute straff Gottes. Naturliche Ursachen nemlich die Hitz und würckung etlicher Planeten, mit der Sonnen, als Martis, Iovis, Saturni, und sönderlich sagt Albumasar vom Saturno. [Ruscelli, Girolamo (ed.)].
Delle lettere di principi. Venice, Francesco Ziletti, 1581.
4to (152 x 208 mm). 3 volumes. (6), 236 ff. (6), 203 ff. (8), 284 ff. With woodcut printer's device to title-pages. Early 19th century full vellum with giltstamped spines and double labels. All edges gilt and goffered with a floral design. Rare collection of correspondence by significant personalities and rulers, including Andrea Doria, Annibale Caro, Baldassare Castiglione, Bernardo and Pietro Bibiena, Cardinal Bessarion, Lorenzo and Cosimo de' Medici, Pietro Gonzaga, Hieronimo Fracastoro, Giovanni Bembo, Francesco Guiccardini, Emperor Charles V, Pope Clement VII (Giulio de' Medici), etc. Important both as historical and linguistic documents; the definitive edition. - Ruscelli was a prolific and versatile Italian scholar who published on topics ranging from cartography to alchemy. A native of Viterbo, he eventually settled in Venice, where the first edition of "Delle Lettere Di Principi" was published in 1562 in a single volume. A prettily bound set with 19th century collection stamp to title-pages of vols. 1 and 3. Edit 16, CNCE 16617. Adams L 564. BM-STC Italian 376. Melzi II, 115f.
