First edition of this famed set providing an excellent history of the origins of English Printing and typography to 1599 and including an extensive sections on various alphabets including Hebrew Aramaic Greek Russian Irish Old Irish Gothic German and many others. The sections on printing typography forging types typesetting and various presses are extensive and detailed. Johnson 1777-1848 worked for a private press at Lee Priory Kent which published limited editions of poetry prose and pamphlets but eventually failed. [PRINTING: FIRST WORLD WAR] William Archibald Clowes (1866-1937), Chairman, William Clowes & Sons Ltd, English printers:
Clowes Printer; Royal Society of Arts 12 Typed Letters and one Autograph Letter re the printing of the 'Society of Arts Journal' addressed to Sir HT. Wood and G.K.Menzies Secretaries Royal Society of Arts together with one printed circular.
10 August 1915 to 23 November 1917. Clowes is an eminent firm of English printers founded in London in 1803 and still thriving in Suffolk. The twelve typed letters are each one page quarto on the firm's Duke Street letterhead. The autograph letter is one page 12mo with mourning border. The collection in good condition overall with a few items aged and lightly creased. Most items docketed and bearing the Society's stamp. All items except the circular signed by 'W A Clowes' who he informs Wood in his first letter has taken over from his cousin Captain W. C. Knight Clowes whose copy of the First Folio was subsequently bought by William Foyle. The collection provides an fascinating insight into the effect of the Great War on the printing trade with Clowes reluctantly announcing repeated increases in costs. In the third letter 21 October 1915 he states: 'We wish to wait and see what the effect of Lord Derby's recruiting scheme will be on the printing trade because if many more men are taken from it the cost of production will again be greatly increased . I am glad to say that for the moment we have a stock of the old Journal paper at the usual price'. Letter four 14 August 1918 warns of 'another large rise in wages in the London District in the near future' and letter five 27 March 1918 confirms 'the large increase in wages that the printing and binding trades have been compelled to grant their workpeople. All materials used in printing and binding have again risen and are still rising . we shall be obliged to raise our prices to you for printing and binding by a considerable percentage'. Letter six 20 March 1918 responds to a complaint from Menzies regarding the printing of the Journal's wrappers: 'I . cannot in any way defend the printing. I was having the matter thoroughly looked into before your letter came and the type renovated'. He complains that 'labour is so scarce' but promises that he will be 'keeping an eye on it until it is done properly'. Letter of 13 June 1917 announces '15% extra on composition machining and binding owing to the increases in wages which took place previously to October 1916 and the large increase that took place then and the still larger increase which had to be paid on this June 1st'. A printed circular announces another rise of 15% from 31 October 1917 'owing to the further increases in War Bonuses and the never ceasing increases in the cost of all materials'. On 28 March 1917 Clowes warns that the firm has 'only sufficient paper in stock to take us to about June 30th' and that 'prices will rise very sharply immediately owing to the great scarcity of materials'. In the handwritten letter which ends the series Clowes thanks Menzies for his 'kind letter of sympathy with us on the sad loss we have sustained by the death of my Cousin Mr Knight Clowes. I note with pleasure that you intend to insert a short obituary notice of him in your Journal. Large Scrapbook Archive of Undergarment Packaging Samples from Consolidated Lithographing Corporation
Brooklyn NY: Consolidated Lithographing Corp 1958. Near fine. An enormous scrapbook of chronologically-arranged printing samples from the Consolidated Lithographing Corporation of Brooklyn preserving the company's packaging work for the undergarment industry. Labels include bands tags wraps and labels from predominantly women's products: stockings hosiery lingerie bras panties and the like. Men's and children's products also represented however socks undershirts etc. The printing processes evident in the samples evolve from chromolithography to color lithography to photo mechanical in the later examples - all vivid and exhibiting elegant postwar design. Hundreds of brands and products in total: Regent Hosiery Artemis Underthings Treo Undergaments Spick and Span Hosiery Lowenstein Fabrics Sport-Wear The Lone Ranger and Superman Branded Socks among many others. Consolidated Lithographing Corporation was founded by Jacob A. Voice around 1925 and operated as one of the finest and most prolific American commercial printers of the era specializing in cigar labels dust jackets for Doubleday liquor labels garment packaging and more. This rich archive likely containing the only extant examples of numerous works offers numerous worthy avenues for future study: from commercial printing methods to mid-century design and marketing. Hardcover. Elephant folio. Grey cloth screw-bound boards. Measuring approximately 24" x 16.5" containing 350 color lithographed and chromolithographed paper packaging elements in a wide variety of sizes adhesive mounted recto and verso to 38 paper leaves. Additional 65 leaves blank. Top board stamped "Consolidated Lithographing Corporation." Pencil notations recording catalog numbers and dates throughout. Mild handling wear to exterior. Late 19th - Early 20th Century Printer's Scrapbook.
Boston 1888 - 1917. Good. 9" x 7-7/8". 50 leaves of which 30 have been used. Stab-bound green and brown paper-covered boards white title label on burgundy paper burgundy paste-downs. Contains 53 clippings plus 21 other pieces: an S. J. Parkhill & Co. business card an insurance document for Charles L. D. Parkhill several printed announcements and poems a three page typed poem on the back of Parkhill letterhead flyers etc. Light wear; paper of front joint cracked; leaves and clippings toned and somewhat brittle with occasional short tears and chips to edges; tears and wear to some laid in material. One leaf shows evidence of an item having been removed. A scrapbook apparently compiled by printer Charles L. D. Parkhill the son of Samuel James Parkhill who founded S. J. Parkhill & Co. Printers in Boston in 1875; by the 1910s the firm was primarily known for its publication of textbooks. The scrapbook is a compilation of clippings printed matter and a few holograph scraps affixed tipped-in and laid into the album many of which are notices of the death or bankruptcy notices of other local printers and publishers: Louis Prang Edgar O. Silver William E. Cochrane employed by Prang Dana Estes Moses King Josiah Stearns Cushing and of course Samuel James Parkhill. Other Parkhill material includes a business flyer for James Duffy an employee of Parkhill & Co. as well as a newspaper clipping of his death notice and a newspaper clipping announcing the marriage of another Parkhill employee.Several newspaper clippings pertain specifically to Charles L. D. Parkhill which with the aforementioned Parkhill material and the insurance document lead us to believe the scrapbook was created by Charles Parkhill. In 1911 he was arrested for speeding and he appears to have enjoyed a fast lifestyle in other areas as well: several non-printing related items attest to his love for horseracing drinking literature and dogs not necessarily in that order.Overall an interesting and somewhat morbid collection of material by one printer about his fellows in early 20th century Boston. hardcover

Warren has done paper for many years and these "salesman's" samples come from a period of popularity and high production of common papers later offering only specialty and packaging products. Formerly attributed erroneously to Fronsperger's "Kriegßbuch", from which Amman's fine title woodcut was taken, the treatise was first published privately in 1560 as the 8th volume of the monumental military encyclopedia by the imperial field marshal and fortification architect Reinhard count Solms (1491-1562); Feyerabend issued it separately in 1563. The text woodcuts show siege engines and instruments. - Leaves XIII and XIIII transposed. The first Strasbourg edition, a revision of the Freiburg first edition published the previous year. In the manner of a dialogue between teacher and student, the book discusses the sciences and liberal arts, including music (with notes), medicine, geometry, surveying, etc. Grüninger modified several woodcuts from the first edition and added others; he also incorporated a brief Hebrew grammar by Conrad Pellicanus, making this the first Strasbourg-printed book to include Hebrew type (cf. Schmidt). - Among the illustrations are a map of the world on f. c6r and many charming miniature woodcuts in the margins. Occasionally, details of the initials (F11r) and woodcuts (e.g., F18v, c2v [salamander], and c3v [dragon]) have been coloured in red. Several contemporary underlinings and marginalia, including a lengthy note on earthquakes that supplements the printed text by additional sources, such as the Arabian astronomer Abu Ma'shar: "Erdbebung bedeute straff Gottes. Naturliche Ursachen nemlich die Hitz und würckung etlicher Planeten, mit der Sonnen, als Martis, Iovis, Saturni, und sönderlich sagt Albumasar vom Saturno. Archive of Job Printing Fine Printing and Short Works from a Seattleite
Seattle 1981. Archive of ephemeral printed materials and two typed essays both with hand drawn or colored illustrations. Generally very good or better with the occasional scuff or crease. <br /> <br /> An attractive and varied set of materials mainly consisting of "copies of jobs done" as labeled on the folder housing the collection. Gregory Francis Robison attended Seattle Prep School and apparently began printing at a fairly early age; we find in newspapers he likely graduated ca. 1972 and the earliest piece in this collection is dated 1967. From small senior prom keepsakes to finely printed party invitations there is a definite sense of progression of artistry and technique in the items. Interestingly this archive also contains two manuscript essays on Pacific Northwest Coast Indians both copyrighted in 1968 and one with a Library of Congress Cat. No. no less. The Archive includes:<br /> <br /> 1. 9 Small tickets business cards announcements etc. for local events several for clubs at Seattle Prep including Harlequin Club productions. A couple are dated in 1971 and 1972.<br /> <br /> 2. 2 small Seattle Prep Prom keepsakes from 1967 and 1971 both bound in blue card covers with blue string ties.<br /> <br /> 3. 9 Larger format finely printed invitations programs advertisements Christmas cards etc. a couple dated from 1971-1981. First edition of this beautifully printed catalogue No. 5 which helped launch the growth of the modern power tool industry and was produced by the Donnelley & Sons Lakeside Press. First developed by Black & Decker in 1910 their portable electric drill “with the pistol grip and trigger switch†was patented in 1917 and proved so invaluable for factory floors that employees began taking the drills home to work on their own projects so in 1923 the company introduced an entire line-up of portable tools aimed at non-professionals. Alonzo Decker and S. Duncan Black focused on improving their own inventions as well as other inventors products and they also marketed here their groundbreaking air compressor designed for automobile owners to inflate their tires. Decker 1884-1956 had no formal education beyond the 7th grade and would eventually hold 41 patents; Black 1883-1951 co-founded the company and was a draftsman educated at Baltimore Polytechnic who was essential in securing patents for the company and he himself held 14 patents. ADVERTISEMENT FOR "BICYCLE" PLAYING CARDS
Webster City Iowa: The United States Printing Company Russell & Morgan Factories n.d. ca 1891. n.d. ca. 1891. PROMOTIONAL CARD. 3-1/2" x 2-1/2." The front of the card shows a very colorful picture of the King of Spades riding a bicycle and pointing to a trademark sign for Bicycle cards. He's wearing a backpack stating "Bicycle Cards" There are 2 holes in each wheel; one holds a paper wheel that turns and the other shows the numbers 1 - 10. On the reverse side of the card "Bicycle" Playing Cards are briefly described and promoted. Also stated is "Compliments of The Webster City Grocery Co. Webster City Iowa." The United States Playing Card Company was founded in 1867 as Russell Morgan & Co. a printing company. The company began printing four brands of playing cards in 1881: Tigers Sportsman's Army and Navy and Congress. They began printing Bicycle cards which would become their most popular line in 1885. Business boomed and in 1891 Russell Morgan & Co. changed its name to the United States Printing Company. The playing card business was successful enough that it was spun off as a separate business in 1894 as The United States Playing Card Company. Light soiling and rubbing to rear and with light crease running along the bottom edge. Appears to have been professionally repaired. A very nice piece of early promotional material .
