The front of the card shows a very colorful picture of the King of Spades riding a bicycle and pointing to a trademark sign for Bicycle cards. On the reverse side of the card "Bicycle" Playing Cards are briefly described and promoted. Also stated is "Compliments of The Webster City Grocery Co. Webster City Iowa." (104) Bll. Nuremberg, Conrad Zeninger, [after 3 May] 1481.
4to. 22 ff. (a7, b8, c7: wants first and last blanks). 32 lines, Gothic type. Rubricated throughout, 3 four-line lombardic initials, red penwork decoration at beginning of text. Later cream-coloured calf in contemporary style, with blind rules and stamped cover title "Tractatus De Turcis". Third edition of this polemical treatise against the Ottomans. Mainly contains prophecies referring to the Turks (by Merlin, Cyrillus, Joachim of Fiore, St. Hildegarde, Catherine of Siena, Methodius, etc.). Also one of the earliest texts to mention Hungary, and one of the very few works printed by Zeninger: "Conrad Zeninger (from Mainz) produced a mere 10-odd books between 1480 and 1482" (cf. Halle 70). The prophecy referring to the King of Hungary (fol. a[5]r) is reprinted by Fraknói Vilmos, "Schlauch Lörincz szatmári püspöknek Török János által gyüjtött könyvtára", in: Magyar Könyvszemle 2 (1877), p. 77-90, at: 77f. (cf. Apponyi). The date is based on the mention of the death of Mehmet II on fol. A[4]v. - Some browning, with slight waterstain throughout in lower margin; first and final leaf washed. Slight paper flaw in fol. 1 (not touching text); final leaf restored. Faint traces of a later ms. page count are visible near the lower edge. Occasional 16th-century marginalia. A fine copy of this rare work, rubricated throughout. HC 15681. Goff T-503. GW M48133. BMC II, 460. BSB-Ink T-437. Oates 1077. Proctor 2229. Walsh I, 794. Pellechet 11154. [U. S. Treasury Department Bureau of Engraving and Printing]
SPECIMEN BOOKS PRESIDENTS BINDINGS Presidents of the United States 1789 to 1897 spine title White House Vignette. Romaine cover title with portraits signed by Grover Cleveland and FIrst Lady Frances Cleveland
n. p. but Washington: U. S. Treasury Department Bureau of Engraving and Printing 1895. Hardcover. Near fine. Square octavo 21 numbered leaves of portrait plates plus four unnumbered. Bound in full crushed navy morocco with elaborate gilt tooling to boards spine compartments and edges with gilt dentelles all edges gilt and marbled endpapers. In near fine condition overall very well-preserved with a few tiny nicks to the corners and some scattered internal foxing mostly at the gutters and borders; and not on the proof images. The first two engravings depict the U. S. Capitol Building and the White House. The last two portraits of sitting President Grover Cleveland and his wife Frances are each SIGNED by their subjects in different ink below the images. The main contents consist of extremely well-executed and quite familiar portraits of the presidents; the very portraits that were used by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing on official U. S. banknotes. These Treasury Department specimen books were produced in very small numbers and presented to important diplomats cabinet secretaries members of Congress and the like. The proof engravings contained within were designed for use on official US banknotes though some of the images were likely never used on actual money. At the turn of the 21st century numismatic experts had counted 47 known examples. Several more have come to auction primarily numismatic since then but they remain extremely rare in the trade. No two specimen books are exactly alike. We could trade one example closely matching the contents of ours however that copy was in a different binding and did not include the signed portraits of President and Mrs. Cleveland.

The name "Romaine" is stamped on the gilt-stamped morocco label on the front board and is almost certainly the surname of the intended recipient of this volume though without any further context nor any bookplates or written provenance we are unable to identify this person.

When these books do occasionally come to auction there is much buzz. It is difficult to imagine a more interesting and treasured sort of volume for anyone who has an interest in numismatics and rare books. A rare chance to own a special volume of American printing history. (U. S. Treasury Department Bureau of Engraving and Printing) hardcover

[WOODBLOCK PRINTING]
A Collection of Ofuda å¾¡æœ Charms in Three Albums
A Collection of Ofuda å¾¡æœ Charms in Three Albums . Taisho 5 1916. The large album was compiled in Taisho 5 1916 according to the date in the preface. Slightly over 1200 ofuda ranging in size from that of a grain of rice there are 97 of these up to 21.5 x 31 cm. However the majority are approximately 15 x 5.5. cm or thereabouts with most having similar vertical proportions. All but three are laid down in the three albums. Two of the albums are matching double-sided accordion-fold albums with brown paper boards 23 x 16 cm each with a calligraphed title slip. 116 and 118 pages respectively including pastedowns. One of them opens with a large sheet of text 31.5 x 18 cm laid down. These albums are made from printed books that have been repurposed: the printed texts two long sheets each printed on one side only and bound parallel to each other back-to-back between the boards were detached and flipped over leaving the blank side of each exposed and then reattached to the boards. There is some ghosting of the printed text in areas that are not covered by ofuda and a few blank pages. The third album 100 pp. including pastedowns has worn cloth-covered boards 27 x 20.5 cm and an abraded title slip. It opens with two manuscript pages and there are a couple of notes within the album. Otherwise it is full of charms pasted down on every page.

Ofuda å¾¡æœ are small amulets or charms available at shrines and temples in Japan for a small donation. Some of the paper amulets are tied to pillars or gates as an offering while others are meant to be kept. The amulets are meant as a protection such as safety from fires or for luck as during pregnancy or exams. Some shrines are associated with specific protections and offer a particular Ofuda often in a brocade envelope for safekeeping. The large album is filled with colorful beautifully illustrated charms many with the town or place names; one of the smaller albums has mostly color while the other has all bw. The small album with color also contains paper slips from businesses as well. These are a type of Senjafuda åƒç¤¾æœ votive slip that often shows the name of the worshiper and were pasted on temple ceilings during a visit or are used by companies as business cards. The woodcuts use Edo period script and sometimes include an image that suggests the business.

Foxing to the album pages with foxing to some charms in the large album. For further interesting information on ofuda charms and other popular printed genres we recommend Rebecca Salter's excellent book available from Univ. of Hawaii Press Japanese Popular Prints: from Votive Slips to Playing Cards.

A wonderful older collection of an ephemeral genre which is by no means easy to find either in collection or singly. unknown

[Zacchia da Vezzano, Laudivio].
Lettere del Gran Mahumeto imperadore de' Turchi [...]. Venice, Gabriel Giolito de' Ferrari, 1563.
8vo. 192 pp. With woodcut printer's device, headpiece and initial. Contemporary half vellum over marbled boards with faded handwritten spine-title. Second Italian, and second vernacular edition of the celebrated "Epistolae Magni Turchi", a best-selling 15th century literary invention by Laudivio Zacchia of Vezzano. Here translated by the ubiquitous Lodovico Dolce, these letters purport to represent the correspondence of Sultan Mehmet II, the conqueror of Constantinople and Byzantium (still alive at the time of writing), with governors and potentates from Persia to the Mediterranean islands, Greece, and Italy. Through this albeit fictitious collection Laudivio could highlight Turkish/Islamic territorial ambitions, as well as, by implication, political and ethical differences between East and West, not always to the credit of his Christian contemporaries. - A reissue of the 1562 first edition. The little collection proved hugely popular, calling for more than twenty incunabular editions, all now individually rare, and further reprints in the 16th and 17th centuries. - Occasional light brownstaining; lower corner of fol. C6 torn away, affecting a single letter; a tiny marginal paper flaw to fol. M2. BM STC-Italian 455. Göllner 1047. Blackmer 955. Edit 16, CNCE 26436. Tiraboschi, Storia della letteratura italiana III, 177.
