‎Édition Abel l'Angelier imprimée une première fois à son nom dix ans plus tôt (1577) des Lettres missives et familières du forézien Estienne Du Tronchet (1510-1585) publiées en 1568-1569 par Lucas Breyer, augmentée du Monologue de la Providence divine et suivie des Lettres amoureuses tirées des poètes italiens Parabosco, Sansovino et Pietro Bembo.Pièces liminaires : portrait de l'auteur au verso du titre, Avis au lecteur d'Estienne Du Tronchet, Acrostiche de Nicolas Vigner, deux sonnets de Claude de Mongisson, table.« Du Tronchet était mort, vers 1585, à Rome, où il avait passé les dernières années de sa vie. Ce qui donne surtout de l'intérêt à ses lettres, ce sont les noms des personnages à qui elles sont adressées. La table n'en énumère pas moins de 154. En divers endroits on trouve l'anagramme de l'auteur : En heur content se dit » (Rothschild, n°1876 édition 1615).Provenance : Louis Brun (1851-1940) - libraire lyonnais, fils du libraire Auguste Brun à qui il succède en 1887 - avec ex-libris imprimé sur le premier contreplat Nobirulus Bibliopola Lugd. 1887, une note bibliographique autographe à l'encre rouge, et l'étiquette de librairie sur la garde supérieure et le second contreplat "Librairie ancienne Brun, rue du Plat N°13 Lyon" (numelyo). Two medical textbooks by the Parisian anatomist Dubois, widely used by French medical students in the mid-16th century. The present volume is heavily annotated by a contemporary owner who signs his name as "Mirard" (?) on the first title-page. The annotations are particularly extensive in the sections on blood vessels, muscles, and nerves. - Dubois (1478-1555, Latinized as "Sylvius") was the first to describe venous valves, which he injected with coloured liquids (although their function was discovered only later by William Harvey), and is credited with first having given names to the various muscles, previously simply numbered. His blind reverence for the ancient physicians, especially Galen, involved him in a public controversy with his most famous student, Vesalius, who had dared to expose the errors of the Greeks. A former classicist, Dubois is also the author of the first French grammar to be published in France. - Some waterstaining near end, the final leaf showing severe paper flaws with some loss to the index. The first 50 ff. show noticeable worming to the gutter, stronger near the beginning, but mostly without loss to text. An additional handwritten ownership from Montpellier, another center of French medical learning (signed "G. B. Minet", dated 1709), at the bottom of the title page. Durling 1259 & 1236. ‎A SPECTACULAR LARGE-PAPER COPY OF THE PLATE VOLUME DEVOTED TO WORMS AND ZOOPHYTES (from the Dictionnaire des sciences naturelles), PRINTED LARGE QUARTO ON EXTREMELY FINE WOVE PAPER, WITH ALL THE PLATES (116, by various engravers after Jean-Gabriel PrÍtre) IN TWO STATES, BOTH UNCOLORED AND COLORED. Some of the colored plates are printed in color, others are colored by hand, but most are printed in color and finished by hand. 32 pp. and 232 plates, complete. The coloring in this copy is vastly superior to that found in the regular octavo issue--in many of the plates it is positively luminous. Large 4to (30.4 x 23 cm). Beautifully bound in contemporary quarter calf and decorated boards. Little traces of wear to extremities of binding. Plates FINE AND BRIGHT, WITH THE COLORS VERY FRESH, and a little faint spotting caused by impurities in the paper. EXTREMELY RARE in this state: Brunet (II, 696) mentions that large-paper copies exist, and acknowledges that a few copies have the plates both colored and uncolored. SPECTACULAR AND IMPORTANT.‎

Contemporary limp vellum with ms. spine title. First edition of this notorious 16th century defence of censorship, couched as a dialogue between Theotimus and Nicolaus, which includes biting attacks on authors who were thought to threaten public morals - notably Rabelais. Other widely-received works of a particularly corrupting character that Dupuyherbault (ca. 1490-1566) singles out for criticism include the Arthurian literary cycle, Merlin's prophecies (highly esteemed in the Middle Ages), Ogier the Dane, and especially the 13th century Roman de la Rose: indeed, the author of this work (he writes) must have suffered the fate of Judas, unless he repented of his sins (p. 131). Dupuyherbault is also one of the earliest scholars to note that catalogues of banned books are prone to being exploited as lists of recommended reading by persons who otherwise would have remained ignorant of their existence (p. 238). - Very rare: a single copy in auction records since 1963. A German translation appeared as early as 1581. - II: "A curious little work" (Reusch) in which Cardona, who was himself involved with the Roman Congregation's expurgation efforts, provides an elaborate argument for striking also the names of the heretic authors from their expurged books. The Spaniard J. B. Cardona (1511-89), bishop of Tortosa, suggests that this would bring greater honour to Christ while denying the heretic the honour he craves, whereas preserving their names would be tantamount to giving credit where none is due. The only cases in which the heretic authors' names are to be kept are those in which they are mentioned by pious or learned men with the purpose of refuting or slighting them. "A member of the Index Congregation, Cardinal Gabriel Paleotto, agreed with Cardona and prompted him to have his treatise printed. Gregory XIII accepted the dedication of the work and issued the relevant decree 'for the said reasons as well as for others'" (cf. Reusch I, 454).
