12mo., wanting front free endpaper, some light age-staining, mid-nineteenth-century doodles on rear endpapers; contemporary full sheep, covers mildly scuffed and age-marked, hinges cracked (but binding entirely sound), a good, tight copy. First published in 1712, Lewis's 'Catechism' was swiftly recognised as a valuable aid to the teaching of scripture and liturgy. Dedicated to the SPCK, it seems to have become a standard tool of the newly-formed charity schools, where pupils were regularly assessed on their prowess in responding to the vicar's catechism. Symson's letters reveal that the text that guided their learning was Lewis's; one of three books (the others being the Bible itself and Allestree's 'The Whole Duty of Man') that White Kennett of the SPCK hoped would help turn young children into 'little garrisons against Popery'. (See Jones, 'The Charity School Movement', 1995, p.14). John Lewis (1675-1747) was educated at Exeter College Oxford, ordained in 1698 and served as vicar of Minster in Kent from 1709 until his death (interestingly, he is given on the title of the present edition as 'Minister of Margate in Kent'). His works include biographies of Wycliffe, Caxton and Pecock, valuable topographical studies of Kent and numerous contributions to religious history and bibliography.This Lincolnshire edition must be unusually scarce for we can find no reference to it in any standard source. J Mozley is the first recorded printer at Gainsborough where he established his press in 1778. H[enry] Mozley (the present printer) appears to have succeeded him sometime in the late 1790s. Not listed in BLPC or NLC.

Early edition of one of the principal treatises of musical instruction produced in the 16th century, containing a wealth of pioneering theories and practical examples; first published in this form in 1537. It also boasts the first consistently executed example of a canon (still called "fuga"), with references to compositions by Josquin and Walther. - Based on the works of Rhaw and Agricola, Listenius's treatise avails itself of Melanchthon's new educational methods and "became very popular as a school primer in Germany and Austria, and had appeared in more than 40 editions before 1583. The treatise was primarily for teaching singing, and is arranged in a novel manner. Each subject is treated in a series of short, simple rules copiously illustrated with music examples. In the section on mensural music Listenius used the canon [...] for his examples. For the first time, in addition to the traditional terms 'musica theoretica' and 'musica practica', he introduced the term 'musica poetica', by which he meant instruction in composition. The term remained in general use in Germany for over a century" (K. W. Niemöller, New Grove XI, 28). - Contemporary handwritten ownership of "Joannes Thenn S." in a humanist hand on the title page (no relationship could be traced to the Franconian Johann Thenn who had become master of the Salzburg mint in 1500); numerous Latin underlinings and marginalia by the same writer in red and brown ink throughout (covering some 30 pages). Grimston was the second son of the author, and Harriot her sister-in-law, lithographed portrait frontispiece of the author on india-proof paper, title within decorative border, 9 lithographed plates and plans, one etched plate, 11 lithographed armorials in the margins, some light spotting, contemporary half morocco,upper joint split. "Probably the earliest [British] topographical book with its text lithographed... the most striking feature of the book is the discrepancy between the assurance of the writing of the main text and the naivety of the drawings..."?Twyman, Early Lithographed Books, pp. 179-180. Twyman suggests that Charlotte Grimston (wife of the first earl of Verulam who owned Gorhambury) was responsible for the views and plans, but employed a professional lithographic writer for the text. To which is added, (now for the first time printed) selections from the work of M. Br?geaut; forming a sequel to the manual, and bringing down the improvements in the art of the present time. Translated from the French, by C. Hullmandel.
Third Edition, corrected, xix,117,[3]pp., 2 fold-out lithographed plates, the first containing twelve figures of tools and implements, the second nine figures of printing presses and parts, both plates are lightly water-marked affecting the image, & with 1" marginal tear to vertical fold of each, final leaf includes publisher's advertisements for two additional titles by Hullmandel; front & back endpapers soiled, with early owner's signature (L. Stilson) & date on front pastedown, final two blank leaves bit stained, half calf with early marbled paper over boards, red leather label (3x2") with gilt border & title, "A Manual of Lithography", & the name "L. Stilson" added to front board; spine worn & rubbed with 1-1/4" piece missing at head & small label with black "C" at foot; 3" split in front joint; corners, edges & joints worn, paper boards chipped, edges of cover label chipped. Hullmandel's best know work and most influential publication is his book 'The art of drawing on stone' which was first published in 1824. But in terms of establishing lithography in Britain, his translation from the French of this treatise by Raucourt de Charleville was probably just as important. This third and final edition contains some important new additions. Colonel Antoine Raucourt was chief engineer at the Ecole des Ponts et Chauss?es in Paris and ran its in-plant lithographic press. His book was originally published in Toulon in 1819. Hullmandel thought highly of Raucourt's treatise and wrote in the preface: "The books which have hitherto been published on lithography are very imperfect, and are much more adapted to persons who already understand the art than those who wish to learn it... I have repeatedly wished for a guide to explain the new accidents which occur every instant, and which... appear each time so new and intricate, that the beginner is consequently tempted to give up all hopes of ever succeeding. I am consequently better enabled to appreciate the value of this excellent treatise on lithography, and hesitate not an instant to pronounce it the best work which has ever been published on the art." Mid-18th-century boards using an 18th-century antiphonary. First edition of the author's first important work, an exhortation to fight the Turks, couched as a Latin tragedy. Jakob Locher (1471-1528) had been created poet laureate but months before. The volume is concluded by a "Dyalogus" against all forms of heresy (and including encomia and dedicatory addresses to the Emperor and the nobles of court and clergy). - Contains fine woodcuts, some of which were used previously in the Strasbourg editions of Terence and the Ship of Fools; at least six blocks were cut originally for this book. "The opening woodcut depicts the author and newly crowned poet laureate" (cf. von Arnim). This is the earlier impression without the armorial woodcut on fol. B6r (as in Schramm); the final line of fol. J3r still reads "tekos" (for "telos"). Typographical errors "Jacboi" on fol. L2r; "Daum" (for "Datum") in final line of fol. L3r; colophone reads "anno christo". A pinhead-sized wormhole throughout the blank margin (not touching text). Top edge trimmed rather closely in places; a few underlinings by a contemporary hand. Second edition, the earliest one obtainable and usually considered the first altogether (a single copy of an edition published by Da Ponte in 1582 has been discovered in the Biblioteca della Collegiata S. Pietro Apostolo in Broni near Pavia). The principal work of the Milan artist and theoretician of art, Giampaolo Lomazzo, has been called "the most complete treatise on the art theory, design, and iconography of the Mannerist period" (Arntzen/R.); indeed, "the true Bible of Mannerism" (cf. Schlosser). Purposefully divided into the mystical number of seven books, Lomazzo's treatise describes first proportions (with a discussion of Dürer, who was much-received in Italy), then the expression of feelings, colours, light and shade, linear perspective, and practical painting; the seventh and final book treats matter and substances, touching upon - and greatly expanding on - Armenini. "These last two chapters are of the greatest importance for understanding the essence of Mannerism, providing quite simply one of the most extensive accounts" (ibid.). - Some occasional browning and waterstaining near beginning; slight paper flaw to fol. E3 (not affecting legibility). Numerous errors in pagination; quire Y jumbled but complete. A small perforation to the spine; textblock curled. Old ownership on front flyleaf obliterated in ink.
