RARE 16th-century edition of the "Thesaurus Linguae Sanctae", a Hebrew-Latin dictionary for Catholic ministers, originally composed during the early 16th century by the Dominican Bible scholar St.Pagnini. The dictionary appended a list of nominalization patterns and a list of irregular nouns. This edition was printed by the famous Dutch publisher Christopher Plantin at 1570, during the first years of the religious strife that came to be known as the Eighty Years' War. The book features the publisher's elaborate emblem on the title page, a decorative first capital letter on the first text page, and floral title bars in several places throughout the book. The book ends with a royal privilege from Emperor Maximilian II. 115x165mm. Unpaginated preface and appendix. 380 pages (irregular pagination: [188] + [193-380], but the text is COMPLETE. Rebound in black cloth Hardcover. Gilt lettering on spine. Ex libris and binder's stickers on endpaper. Pen inscriptions (dated 1752) on title page, and outside the text on few other pages. Last text page upper edge slightly torn - NO damage to text. Pages yellowing. [SUMMARY]: This 16th-century old Plantin dictionary is surprisingly preserved in very good condition.

Sarlavla page decorated with traditional ornaments. First edition of this extremely rare and the first translation of the Anabasis of Alexander in the Ottoman / Turkish literature. One of 1010 copies. The Anabasis of Alexander was composed by Arrian of Nicomedia in the second century AD, most probably during the reign of Hadrian. The Anabasis (which survives complete in seven books) is a history of the campaigns of Alexander the Great, specifically his conquest of the Persian Empire between 336 and 323 BC. Both the unusual title "Anabasis" (literally "a journey up-country from the sea") and the work's seven-book structure reflect Arrian's emulation (in structure, style, and content) of the Greek historian Xenophon, whose own Anabasis in seven books concerned the earlier campaign "up-country" of Cyrus the Younger in 401 BC. The Anabasis is by far the fullest surviving account of Alexander's conquest of the Persian Empire. It primarily revolves around the military history, reflecting the content of Arrian's model, Xenophon's Anabasis; the work begins with Alexander's accession to the Macedonian throne in 336 BC and has nothing to say about Alexander's early life (in contrast, say, to Plutarch's Life of Alexander). Nor does Arrian aim to provide a complete history of the Greek-speaking world during Alexander's reign. Arrian's chief sources for his writing of the Anabasis were the lost contemporary histories of the campaign by Ptolemy and Aristobulus and, for his later books, Nearchus. One of Arrian's main aims in writing this work on history seems to have been to correct the standard "Vulgate" narrative of Alexander's reign that was dominant in his own day, primarily associated with the lost writings of the historian Cleitarchus. The Anabasis gives a broadly chronological account of the reign of Alexander the Great of Macedonia (336-323 BC), with a particular focus on military matters. George Rhasis (Yorgaki Razi) translated Anabasis Alexandrou = "History of Alexander the son of Philip" the work of Xenophon under the title "Târîh-i Iskender bin Filipos". This is the first translation of an ancient Greek historian into Turkish. Georgios Rhasis, who was one of the first writers of the French-Turkish dictionary in the early period, was an Ottoman intellectual who worked as an instructor and translator in Ottoman and French languages. He also taught at the Eastern Languages School in Paris and continued her studies in Corfu and Paris. In 1821 he came to be in Istanbul as a famous orientalist. Rhasis left the city and the homeland he lived in to settle in Tsarist Russia due to concerns during the Greek Revolution in 1821. The Bulaq or El-Amiriya Press is the first official and governmental printing press to be established in Egypt, and functions according to industrial printing basis, causing not just a qualitative but also a quantitative and knowledgeable leap in science throughout the Arab region. It's established in 1820 by Muhammad Ali Pasha of Egypt and Sudan (1769-1849) and it was part of Muhammad Ali's inclusive development plans for the modernization of Egypt. One of the most extensive Persian grammars written in English. "Matthew Lumsden (1777?1835), orientalist, was fifth son of John Lumsden of Cushnie, Aberdeenshire, and a cousin of Sir Harry Burnett Lumsden (1821?1896), army general. After education at King's College, Aberdeen, he went to India as assistant professor of Persian and Arabic in the College of Fort William, and in 1808 succeeded to the professorship. In 1812 he was appointed secretary to the Calcutta Madrasa, and superintended various translations of English works into Persian then in progress. From 1814 until 1817 he had charge of the East India Company's press at Calcutta, and in 1818 he became secretary to the stationery committee."?(Oxford DNB). Provenance: John L. Each volume begins with a brief introduction and an index (a complete index was separately published by Timotheus Kirchner in 1564). Includes: vol. 1 (Richtzenhayn/Rebart 1564), vol. 2 (ibid. 1563); vol. 3 (Richtzenhayn 1573), vol. 4 (ibid. 1560), vol. 5 (Rödinger's heirs 1557), vol. 6 (Richtzenhayn/Rebart 1568), vol. 7 (Rödinger's heirs 1558), vol. 8 (Rebart's heirs 1580). For the woodcuts monogrammed "PG" in vols. I-VII cf. Nagler (Monogrammisten) IV, 2967, 14. Vol. VIII shows the three Saxon Princes with their coats of arms and a 12-line verse encomium, "Des Luthers Bücher gros und klein". The pretty blindstamped bindings show roll-tools and platestamps, various dates and monogrammes. This set was assembled by the Saxon theologian Dr. Carl Friedrich Bonitz (1775-1835), preacher of the afternoon mass at the Leipzig University Church in 1800, then active in Langensalza from 1802 onwards (and superintendent in 1809). His autograph ownership is on the flyleaf of each volume (dated 1807 in the first). Among Bonitz's works are studies in the Pauline epistles and a "Geschichte der Lutherischen Religions- und Kirchenverbesserung" (1805). - Some browning throughout; occasional slight waterstaining; bindings rubbed. Altogether a well-preserved made-up set from the library of a Saxon protestant theologian of the early 19th century. The alphabet reform which came into effect in Turkey on November 1st, 1928, made reading and writing in Turkish easier compared to the system based on the Arabic script, and it also constituted the new face of Early Republic modernization, which defined its political rhetoric through a break from its Ottoman past. The National Schools (Millet Mektepleri) played a vital role in the campaign for teaching reading and writing with the new alphabet, while the press regime structured in 1934 under the direction of the General Directorate of the Press (Matbuat Umum Müdürlügü) played a key role in the formation of a culture of national press in the country. Just like its counterparts pursued in the 1930s in Europe, in the United States, and in the Soviet Union, the press regime that was in effect in Turkey during the Early Republic period was an efficient cultural management policy, because it utilized centralized policies to shape official and private publishing that was under the control of political powers and because it got masses to adopt the ideology of modernization through publishing that reached rural areas. In the 1930s, the common goal of the press regimes of socialist, fascist, or liberal government systems, which played an active role in mass communication and education policies was the transformation of the official ideology of modernization into social culture.

4to (193 x 134 mm). (52) ff., with large woodcut on title-page of a physician in his study, surrounded by books and jars, repeated on verso, as well as 66 half-page woodcuts of plants. Gothic type, 33 lines per page. An exceptionally large, broad-margined copy, with frequent contemporary Latin annotations (often untrimmed). Bound in brown morocco ca. 1900, all edges gilt. Ex-libris Fairfax Murray (his numbered label on pastedown, this copy described as #669 in his Catalogue). Light spotting throughout; lower blank corner of title-page discreetly repaired. With a handwritten letter enclosed from a curator at the Cambridge University Library, addressed to "Dr. Fleming" and dated 7th March [19]49, discussing this copy. The Fairfax Murray copy of a landmark botanical incunable, being the first or second illustrated edition of "one of the earliest Western documents showing a revival of interest in botany" (Hunt I, p. 4). Following unillustrated Italian printings in 1477 and 1482, the Genevan Jean Belot (printer of the 1495 "Fasciculus temporum", the 'Fardelet du temps') issued two variants of the present work, each employing 66 woodcuts illustrating the herbs of medieval medicine followed by an appendix of 12 (unillustrated) chapters on the medical qualities of various spices. Fairfax Murray cites this as the earliest edition in his collection, based on the state of the woodcuts. - Belot's two printings were imitated in a series of four further editions by his fellow Genevan printer Louis Cruse, also undated but easily distinguishable from the present ones due to their use of fewer woodcuts. Lökkös attributes the first edition to ca. 1495 and the present edition to ca. 1496, and claims that they must have been printed in quick succession: "L'erreur de numérotation des chapitres (xxix pour xxvi) n'est pas corrigée dans la deuxième edition. Ce fait semble confirmer l'hypothèse d'une sortie très rapprochée de la première. L'erreur 'cognoscre' du colophon se retrouve également dans l'exemplaire de la British Library" (Lökkös, p. 163). - Describing the medicinal properties of 77 herbs and spices, the work is written in 2,269 verses of Latin hexametre, a poetic form probably employed as a mnemonic device for physicians or apothecaries. In the 15th century, these verses were confused with a lost poem "De herbis" by the Augustan poet Aemilius Macer ['Floridus'], hence the attribution on the title-page. - "The text titled 'De Viribus Herbarum' (On Properties of Plants) has been traditionally attributed to Odo de Meung (Odo Magdunensis), who is believed to have lived during the first half of the 11th century and was from Meung on the Loire [...] The text was further expanded, including new data from the translation of Arabic texts into Latin in Salerno from the end of the 11th century onward. If this is the case, this text is good evidence of the continuity of scientific activity in the Middle Ages: its most ancient parts come from a period when there was a revival of interest in botany and a recovery of the classical tradition, while the most recent additions integrate the contribution of the Arabic world" (Hunt Botanical Library, online exhibition "Order from Chaos: The Birth of Modern Botany", 2009). - Having belonged to the celebrated collector, art dealer, and Pre-Raphaelite painter Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919), the present copy is in a magnificent state of preservation. Relative to the British Library copy, the present copy is much larger (193 x 134 mm vs 183 x 130 mm). It is unwashed, and most of the annotations by a contemporary pharmacist have been preserved almost in their entirety. The Fairfax Murray catalogue describes the binding as "brown morocco extra, gilt edges in rough"; the present copy is cited in most bibliographical studies of "De Viribus Herbarum" including that of Lökkös. Hain, Reichling, and the BMC fail to record the present variant with the error "cognoscre" on the penultimate line of the final leaf. Fairfax Murray #669 (this copy).
