‎Pantaleone die Confienza (Confluentia).‎

‎Pillularium omnibus medicis quam necessarium [...] Summa lacticiniorum completa omnibus idonea. [Including:] Zerbi, Gabriele. Cautele medicorum no[n] inutiles. (Lyon, Antoine Blanchard [and Laurent Hyllaire], 7 Jan. 1525 [= 1526]).‎

‎Small 4to (20 x 14 cm). XXXVIII, (2) ff. Title-page with a 4-piece woodcut border (using material from Laurent Hylaire). Modern limp sheepskin parchment. Third edition of a collection of three medical and gastronomical texts by two 15th century Italian physicians. All were published separately for the first time at the end of the 15th century, the first collected edition appeared in 1508. - The first, "Pillarium" by Pantaleone di Confienza, is one of the earliest treatises dealing exclusively with pills as remedies for all kinds of diseases. He treats all kinds of aspects of pills, including their various (natural) substances of pills, their various forms (powders, tablets, tinctures, extracts, etc.), their physiological and pathological effects, the preparation and conservation, etc. - The second, "Summa lacticiniorum", by the same author, is the first treatise specifically devoted to cheese and Dalby calls it a "landmark" in the literary discourse for cheese. "It opens with a general section discussing the nature of milk and the range of products made from its, especially cheese; it outlines the variety of cheeses, relating them to the seasons, the climate, the origin of the milk and the methods of making and maturing. In part two Pantaleone surveys the regional and local cheeses known to him, beginning in his own native norther Italy [...] He continues his cheese itinerary through Savoie and across France [...] He thinks little of German cheese, but considers the English ones that he had seen on sale at Antwerp equal in quality to the best Italian kinds" (Dalby). - The third, a treatise on medical ethics by Gabriele Zerbi (1445-1505), aims to protect the integrity of physicians and the medical profession. - Manuscript notes at the last page and a few pages with some underscoring and other marks. Waterstain throughout at the foot, larger towards the end, and the last leaves with wormholes; a good copy. Baudrier II, 431 & V, 98. Durling 3438. USTC 155658 (9 copies). Cf. Dalby, Cheese: a global history (2009), p. 117; Di Troggio, "Confienza, Pantaleone" in: Treccani Enciclopedia Italiana (online ed.).‎

‎Paracelsus [i.e., Philipp Theophrast Bombast von Hohenheim].‎

‎Septem libri de gradibus, de compositionibus, de dosibus receptorum ac naturalium. Basel, Peter Perna, 1568.‎

‎8vo. (28), 186, (10) pp. Woodcut initials. 19th century marbled boards. All edges red. The Norman copy of the first edition thus, very rare, containing "most of [Paracelsus's] innovations in chemical therapeutics" (Garrison/M.). Paracelsus (ca. 1493-1541) was a key member of the German Renaissance and a pioneer of the medical revolution. He was interested in chemistry, hermeticism, and toxicology alongside and in conjunction with his medical theories, and overturned much of the accepted wisdom of medicine in the West. In doing so, he "rebelled against ancient humoral pathology, which held that all disease resulted from an imbalance of bodily humors, by stating that each disease was a specific entity caused by an agent outside the body" (Norman). The "Septem libri de gradibus", first published in slightly different form in 1562, is one of his most essential works. - Covers lightly rubbed, otherwise in good condition. Provenance: from the Wellcome Library (withdrawn stamp on title verso) and the Norman collection with Haskell F. Norman's printed bookplate. VD 16, P 450. Sudhoff 98. Durling 3480. Wellcome I, 4765. Pagel, Paracelsus, pp. 134-146. Norman 1636 (this copy). Cf. Garrison/M. 1818.‎

‎Paradin, Guillaume.‎

‎Historiarum memorabilium ex Genesi descriptio. Lyon, Jean de Tournes, 1558.‎

‎8vo. (96) pp. With arabesque woodcut border to title and 94 woodcuts by Bernard Salomon in the text. - (Bound with) II: Borluyt, Guillaume. Historiarum memorabilium ex Exodo, sequentibusq[ue], libris descriptio. Ibid., 1558. (144) pp. With arabesque woodcut border to title and 136 woodcuts by Bernard Salomon in the text. 19th century full purple morocco on five raised bands, title gilt to spine, leading edges and inner dentelle gilt. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. First Latin editions, previously published in French (as "Quadris historiques de la Bible") in 1555. Each page contains four verses describing a scene from the Old Testament, accompanied by a delicately executed illustration (94 from Genesis, 77 from Exodus, and 59 from other books: a total of 230 woodcuts). Brunet gives 134 (instead of 136) woodcuts for the second book, remarking: "cette suite est fort jolie et fort recherchée". The fine series of illustrations shows the influence of Holbein and Beham, and yet is stylistically independent; "c'est l'oeuvre capitale de Bernard Salomon" (Rondot). There is no preliminary matter to the first book, but the second contains a preface and verses by Borlyut. - Occasional browning; title of first book torn and rebacked; several large tears and paper flaws throughout have been professionally repaired with minimal loss to text. Pages were washed and (in some case excessively) pressed before rebinding. All woodcuts are in good impressions. Provenance: bookplate of the Swiss minister Gaspard Ernest Stroehlin (1844-1907), professor of church history at the University of Geneva; below this slightly later bookplate of G. Velmay. Latterly in a Russian private collection. Fairfax Murray II, 429. Brun, Livre illustr. en France XVIe siècle, 203 (counting only 229 woodcuts). BM-STC French 337 & 76. Adams P 306 & B 2501. Cat. Third Edition, 12mo, woodcut device on title, numerous woodcut diagrams and illustrations in the text, [24], 163, [5] pp. Bound with:- PARDIES (Ignace Gaston) Deux Machines propres a faire Les Quadrans avec Tres-grande facilit?. D?crites & expliqu?es..... Paris, Chez Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy, Imprimeur du Roy, rue S. Jacques aux Cicognes, 1776. Second Edition, 12mo, 7 folding engraved plates, [10], 58, [4] pp. Bound with:- PARDIES (Ignace Gaston) La Statique ou la Science des Forces Mouvantes.‎

‎Second Edition, 12mo, 2 folding plates, numerous illustrations in the text, some light dampstaining on the lower outer corners of a few leaves towards the end, [24], 239, [1] pp., modern calf, morocco label, raised bands on spine, a very nice copy. "A Jesuit, Pardies deserves a place in the history of physics for having intervened in the debate on the ideas of Newton and Huygens at certain decisive moments. His work, which is not extensive, is characteristic of a traditional period..... Although Pardies did not have the time to devote the full measure of his abilities to science, he was undoubtedly one of those vigorous intellects that science always needs.... His notions, as bold as they were n?ive, purported to demonstrate the spirituality of the soul by virtue of its capacity to understand the infinite through the 'clear and distinct ideas' of certain geometric arguments." - DSB.‎

‎Omnium Gatherum, Consisting Chiefly of a Selection of Odds and Ends from an Old Portfolio; and Comprising the Useful, the Amusing, and the Curious.‎

‎4to, 48ff. printed on one-side only (many of puzzles and diagrams), title within an ornamented border, orig. embossed decorated green cloth, re-backed with part of the orig. spine laid-down, all edges gilt, a nice copy. An extremely rare compilation of puzzles and oddities designed to occupy the mind during the 'blank hours of life'. Printed at the home of Nathaniel Brown Engleheart of Blackheath, on the little Parlour press, the author gives "An Apology in lieu of a Preface. Kind Reader! be not severely censorious. ? This little book has the production of the 'lighter' hours of a nearly 'worn out' mind that prays your lenience. ? It has been the result of endeavours to escape idleness, and to occupy those blank hours of life which in a greater or lesser degree assail all. In this respect its purpose has been fulfilled. ? It entertains no hope of 'Approval', it aspires only to 'Indulgence'.". The only other copy located is that of the British Library.‎
