POPE Alexander
The Poetical Works of Alexander Pope. [Aldine Edition]. SPLENDID SET IN ORIGINAL CLOTH
3 vols., sm. 8vo., with engraved portrait frontispiece and title-vignettes, small neat signature on front free endpaper of first volume, some light and inoffensive age-staining to first few leaves; original blue pebble-grain cloth, backstrips with printed paper labels (lightly browned but entirely unworn), uncut, a remarkably well-preserved, bright, clean set. WITH THE FINE NINETEENTH CENTURY ENGRAVED ARMORIAL BOOKPLATE OF HENRY WILLIAM POWNALL ON FRONT PASTE-DOWNS. With 4pp. publisher's catalogue bound in at end at first volume. Aldine Poets, vols. 13, 14, 15 respectively. A landmark in nineteenth century typography and publishing, the Aldine Edition of the British Poets was printed for the house of Pickering by Charles Whittingham at Tooks Court. The Aldine issue of Pope was first published in 1831 (see NCBEL II, 502). 'A complete collection of our Poets, with well written Memoirs, and good readable type is a desideratum; and from the works sent forth we feel assured that the Aldine Editions will supply the want' (Athaneum). A LOVELY SET IN WHOLLY UNRESTORED PERIOD BINDING.

Porzio (Portius), Simone.
An homo bonus vel malus volens fiat, disputatio. Ad Laelium Taurellum iurisconsultiss. Duci Florentinorum a Secretis. Florence, Lorenzo Torrentino, 1551.
4to. 67, (1) pp. With a figural woodcut initial. Marbled wrappers. First edition of this rare treatise on human action and the voluntariness of man's ethical dispositions: "an investigation of whether the formation of a virtuous or vicious habit is due to our freedom of choice. The treatise is divided into fourteen chapters and begins with a doxographical survey in which the Aristotelian position is opposed to the doctrines of the Stoics and the Platonists. What these latter positions have in common, according to Porzio, is that they both deny the complex nature of the human being, which he forcefully depicts as inescapably composed of both rationality and materiality. His analysis of the limits of human freedom touches upon Renaissance concepts of man and his place in the universe, as well as combines a distinctive approach to Aristotle’s teaching with an heterodox attitude towards divine grace" (L. Casini, "En renässansaristoteliker om den mänskliga frihetens gränser", in: Lychnos [2009], pp. 49-67, at p. 61). Porzio (1497-1554), a student of Pietro Pompanazzi and variously a writer on medical subjects, taught philosophy in Pisa and Naples. He held that the soul is the individual and corruptible form of the human body. - A finely printed work, showing some slight brownstaining throughout. From the library of the historian of medicine Walter Pagel (1898-1983). Edit 16, CNCE 34585. BM-STC Italian 537. Adams P 1957. Durling 3741.

De coloribus oculorum. Florence, Lorenzo Torrentino, 1550.
4to. 57, (1) pp., final bl. f. With 2 large figurated initials. Marbled wrappers. First edition; rare. "One of the earliest monographs on ophthalmology in which the author attempts to explain the cause of the variety of colors of eyes. The positions of the eyes and the opinions of Aristotle and Galen on the structure of the eye are also discussed. The author lectured on medicine at Pisa from 1546 to 1552 and was also known as a scientist and philosopher" (Becker). - Elegantly printed in Roman types; slightly browned throughout. From the library of the historian of medicine Walter Pagel (1898-1983). Adams P 1959. BM-STC Italian 537. Edit 16, CNCE 34577. Becker 303. Bird 1989. Durling 3742. Graesse V, 419. Porzio (Portius), Simone.
De dolore. Florence, Lorenzo Torrentino, 1551.
4to. 66 pp., final blank leaf. With two figural woodcut initials. Marbled wrappers. Only edition of this treatise on pain, with a discussion of its philosophical interpretations as provided by the physicians and philosophers Galenus, Aristotle, and (in chapters 5 and 6) the great Arabs Avicenna (Ibn Sina) and Averroes (Ibn Rushd). The author describes pain as an essentially mental rather than physical phenomenon. Porzio (1497-1554), a student of Pietro Pompanazzi and variously a writer on medical subjects, taught philosophy in Pisa and Naples. - A finely printed work, showing some slight brownstaining throughout. From the library of the historian of medicine Walter Pagel (1898-1983). Edit 16, CNCE 34587. BM-STC Italian 537. Adams P 1961. Durling 3744. Wellcome I, 5221. Hirsch/H. IV, 660.

Porzio (Portius), Simone.
De humana mente disputatio. Florenz, Lorenzo Torrentino, 1551.
98 SS., letztes weißes Blatt. Mit figürlicher Holzschnitt-Initiale. Marmorbroschur. 4to. Poggendorff II, 506). "His philosophic theory was identical with that of Pomponazzi, whose 'De immortalitate animi' he defended and amplified in a treatise 'De mente humana'. There is told of him a story which illustrates the temper of the early humanistic revival in Italy. When he was beginning his first lecture at Pisa he opened the meteorological treatises of Aristotle. The audience, composed of students and townspeople, interrupted him with the cry 'Quid de anima' ('We would hear about the soul'), and Porzio was constrained to change the subject of his lecture. He professed the most open materialism, denied immortality in all forms and taught that the soul of man is homogeneous with the soul of animals and plants, material in origin and incapable of separate existence" (Enylopaedia Britannica, 11th ed., s.v.). - Schöner Druck, durchgehend leicht braunfleckig. Aus der Bibliothek des Medizinhistorikers Walter Pagel (1898-1983). Edit 16, CNCE 34588. BM-STC Italian 537. Adams P 1962. Durling 3745.

16 SS. Mit figürlicher Holzschnitt-Initiale. Marmorbroschur. 4to. Edit 16, CNCE 34589. BM-STC Italian 537. Durling 3746. Wellcome I, 5222. Bird 1990. Brunet IV, 830. Graesse V, 419. Hirsch/H. The Tale of Peter Rabbit - Animated!
Akron OH / New York: The Saalfield Publishing Company 1949. Hardcover. Unpaginated about sixteen pages illustrated in monochrome and spot-color with three plates in full color two of which moveables with tabs to pull. First edition of this special adaptation; the 'animation' is woefully simplistic but still in good shape with the pull-tabs slightly worn and the moveables in perfect order. A sort of hardbound pamphlet with the paperstock gadgetry fastened around cardstock boards and a stapled textblock. Slight edgewear to book itself staples rusted with a touch of migration pictures and text clean unmarked and as noted above quite sound. The Saalfield Publishing Company hardcover books

Album of pharmaceutical label samples.
Leeds: Harrison & Waide c.1900. Cough syrup hair dye tooth tincture and poison. An extensive collection of designs ranging from the 1870s through to the Edwardian era demonstrating the development of styles. The labels primarily refer to chemists' and druggists' products but also include advertisements and packaging for food and drink such as whiskey lemonade and curry powder. Operating as printers bookbinders and stationers Alfred Harrison and Thomas Waide commenced trading in 1878. They were based in Leeds an important printing hub of the period that was "second only to London. Leeds firms specialized in quality colour printing of everything from postcards to calendars and posters on tinplate as well as card and paper" Fraser p. 164. That "quality" is very much in evidence here exhibited by the huge range of styles for a vast array of products: rheumatic pellets and kidney pills hair restorer and wart paste castor oil and poisons with much else besides including wine and beer labels photographic developer and furniture polish. Harrison and Waide's firm was well-respected and they moved to successively larger premises until around 1909 when their partnership ended. The expansive nature of the business is indicated by the huge number of chemists who are named on the labels from all parts of Britain Ireland and even as far afield as India. Quarto 254 x 180 mm. Approximately 2000 printed labels mounted on 502 pp. of pink paper thumb index lettered in manuscript at front. With 8 "ordinary slip labels" loosely inserted. Recent dark brown quarter morocco black label dark green cloth sides. With 20th-century bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst Lancashire pharmacist and businessman. Contents lightly soiled else in very good condition. Derek Fraser ed. A History of Modern Leeds 1980. hardcover
