In the original silkcovered sewn boards binding with blue title-label pasted on to front board. 50 woodblock reproduction of Ukiyo-e art all with printed tissueguards describing in both English and Japanese the artist and artwork. A very fine copy. <br/><br/><em>A fine work showing the rich tradition Ukiyo-e art which flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers scenes from history and folk tales travel scenes and landscapes flora and fauna and erotica. The term 'ukiyo-e' translates as "pictures of the floating world". Ukiyo-e was central to forming the West's perception of Japanese art in the late 19th century particularly the landscapes of Hokusai and Hiroshige. From the 1870s onwards Japonisme became a prominent trend and had a strong influence on the early Impressionists such as Edgar Degas Édouard Manet and Claude Monet as well as having an impact on Post-Impressionists such as Vincent van Gogh and Art Nouveau artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. </em> hardcover‎

Rare second edition of Agostino Ricci's "De motu octavae sphaerae", edited by the French mathematician Oronce Finé, originally published in 1513 by Giolito in Trino. Discussing both spherical geometry and kabbalistic theories, the treatise denies the existence of a ninth heavenly sphere by refusing a presumed oscillation of equinoctials and the connected variation in the ecliptic. Ricci (Ricius) was a disciple of Abraham Zacuto, a Spanish Jew who moved to Portugal after the 1492 expulsion of Jewish people from Spain, and whose perpetual almanac was used for all navigational tables (including Vasco da Gama's ones) from its publication in 1496 until Nunez's tables of 1537. - This edition is an important work also for the history of typography. Colineus was one of the pioneers who introduced Italian Renaissance typography to France. This movement, which established many of the still-present typographical idioms, would culminate in the 1530s with books featuring the Roman types developed by Claude Garamond and other masters. - Issued without the "Epistola" mentioned on the title-page (as explained in the colophon). ‎Summary The commercial manuscript book-trade in Paris, that had begun as early as the mid-12th century, was severely disrupted by the arrival of the first printing presses in Paris around 1475. This new invention converted a traditional system of book production that had developed and flourished over the centuries from a handcraft to the mechanical printing press. It was a change that affected not only the livelihood of those who wrote the books and the artists who decorated them, but also the social life of the whole workforce involved in the production of books. This publication traces the activities to which 16th- and 17th-century book artisans had to turn, faced as they were with a dwindling market for manuscripts. Those most affected were the illuminators and scribes who now had to seek alternative ways of making a living and so devise strategems for finding employment in other trades that would benefit from their skills. Thus the reader will discover well-known artists and illuminators finding jobs like adding illustrations to printed books, colouring wood-block prints and designing patterns and motifs for embroideries, tapestries and even glass and metal objects. A most interesting opportunity for illuminators was to get involved with the decorating of fans, a new fashion promoted late in the 17th century by the Sun King Louis XIV himself. In addition to the richly illustrated text, the volume also includes a Register of more than 500 named Illuminators in alphabetical order, giving also their affiliation to their alternative trades and listing personal details including family members and professional associates. The authors Richard and Mary Rouse, who are already widely known for their thorough research into the medieval book trade in Paris with their volume Manuscripts and their Makers, published a similar biographical Register of documented book producers up to the year 1500. With the present publication they are able to reconstruct how much the younger members and relatives of whole families of previous manuscript illuminators were able to continue to contribute to the now newly developing book-trade. This volume is therefore not only a contribution to the history of art and that of the book, but also provides a vivid glimpse into the social history of the period. ‎Édition cambraisienne avec le titre-frontispice à l'adresse valenciennoise de Jean Veruliet publiée l'année de l'originale.« Cet ouvrage enrichi d’un joli frontispice emblématique gravé par Martin Bas de Douai, porte quelquefois la suscription de Valenciennes chez Jean Veruliet 1610 ou Arras Guillaume de La Rivière 1610 ; ces éditions me paraissent cependant être sorties des mêmes presses (de Robat à Cambrai Ndlr) et n'avoir subi d'autres changements que celui du frontispice. Veruliet de Valenciennes n’a imprimé qu’en 1614 ; tous les volumes qui portent son nom avant cette époque furent imprimés chez Guillaume De La Rivière à Arras (…) le permis d’imprimer en date du 13 juillet 1610 est donné à Jean de La Rivière par Toussaint Thomas, Recteur du Collège des Jésuites à Cambrai » (Arthur Dinaux). Le Pantheon huguenot fut imprimé la même année (1610) à Bordeaux, Lyon et Rouen. Louis Richeome (1544-1625), appelé en son temps le « Cicéron français », fit toute sa carrière chez les Jésuites, d'abord comme professeur puis dès 1598, comme l'un des responsables de la Compagnie, en s'efforçant toujours de défendre avec zèle la foi catholique contre les huguenots. Contemporain de François de Sales, il fut est un des précurseurs de l'humanisme dévot. Le Pantheon est la réponse à L'Idolatrie papistique de Jean Bansillion publiée en 1608 dans laquelle Richeome démontre que la religion réformée est non seulement iconoclaste et idolâtre, mais également adoratrice de la Lune et de Vénus, du Diable et autres divinités paiennes telle que Saturne.Provenance : Charles Henneguier (1811-1872), avocat né à Montreuil-sur-Mer (cachet ex-libris) ; Adolphe Lefrancq (ex-libris), conservateur de la bibliothèque municipale de Valenciennes dans les années 1930 ; ex-libris manuscrit dans la marge supérieure du titre-frontispice Communauté de Dompmartin 1682.
