Speaking to the Presidents of the Red Cross Societies the Presidents of the Junior Red Cross Societies in the schools and the Mayors of All the Villlages and Cities in the Kingdom of Bulgaria the circular addressed the territorial changes in Bulgaria after the Second Balkan War which had negated the majority of the gains after the First Balkan War and which in turn had resulted in more than 100 000 Bulgarian refugees from Eastern Thrace Macedonia etc. It explained the overwhelming and crippling effect of such influx of people to the already-battered country and its innability to offer help to its own people. ‎A Collection of Quack Products' Labels‎

‎Various places: Various publishers 1890. Very good. One hundred labels ca 1890s to 1930s; various sizes - from tiny 1 3/4 x 1 to 5 x 3 1/2; some of them illustrated with photographs engravings drawings and chromolithographs; condition varies from fine - with no defects - to good - several of them with chips splits and ink-bleeding due to exposure to moisture. A beautiful collection the largest we have seen it encompassed decades and reflected people's fascination with patent medicines and the breadth of quack products in the late 19th- and early 20th centuries. With manufacturers spanning the entire United States - from Natchez through Davenport to Chicago and from Albany to Tacoma and San Francisco the labels advertised remedies potions pomades and salves and included innocuous mustache wax and rose hair oil the amusing "Spray-A-Cow" which made satisfied cows the dubious "Claro-Derm" depilatory to be aplied and then scraped off with a silver knife the bombastic "Red Hot Heave-Bouncer" for coughs in horses and the "Gypsy Wonder Salve" and the "Brain Duster" the horrid "Blumer's Requi Salve" containing turpentine and carbolic acid and designed to be applied to unmentionable places and the dangerous "FixiT" which was supposed to be a non-poisonous restorer of meats ie it made spoiled meat edible once again. The largest number of labels belonged to products manufactured by Lincoln Chemical Works - established in 1886 in Chicago remembered for their astoundingly-massive line of quack products and known for encouraging every-day people to distribute the company's fares in their spare time. Other names included Geo. Waldman in Iowa also famous for their straight razors Boyston's Pharmacy in San Francisco Leavitt & Smith Pharmacists in Hudson NY and many others. ‎Note of the Soviet Government to the Government of the U.S.A. Statement of the Special Commision for the Establishment and Investigation of the Circumstances of the Shooting of Polish Officers Prisoners of War in the Katyn Forest by the German Fascist Invaders‎

‎S. l.: New Times 1952. First Edition. Very good. Issued as a supplement to the "New Times" journal; 10 1/4 x 7 3/4; pp. 1 4-24; beige wraps printed in black; edges of wraps a bit brittle with a few small nicks and chips; age-toning and a few spots to margins; in about very good- condition. The Katyn Massacre reffered to a series of mass executions of Polish officers and intelectuals in the Spring of 1940 following the Soviet invasion of Poland in several prison camps although it was named after the region of the Katyn Forest where mass graves were first discovered. Investigations into the murders were conducted by various countries and agencies and it was determined that the massacre was initiated and carried out by the NKVD the Soviet Secret Police. The Soviets vehemently denied their involvment and claimed the Nazis had killed those 20 000 Poles. It was not until the early 1990s when Russia finally accepted responsibilty for the executions but refused to identify them as war crimes. In the meantime in 1951 and 1952 a new US Congressional investigation was initiated led by the so called Madden Committee which yet again confirmed that the NKVD had murdered the Polish prisoners. The current statement was issued by the outraged Soviet Government protesting the reopening of the case the investigations and the allegations and resupplying the facts of their own discoveries which proved the Nazi's responsibility for the murders. Numerous small vignettes in the text. Very good. Russian fairy tale printed for children of Russian émigrés in France with illustrations by the ten-year-old Zhenya Kovarskaya the daughter of Ilya Kovarskii and Lidiia Kovarskaia an editor-and-publisher duo which had left Soviet Russia in 1919 and maintained a lending library in Paris as well as organizing various cultural events. The same text was issued in variant wrappers each decorated by hand using different patterns most likely using the pochoir technique. Approximately ten different variants have been identified; it is possible that there were more. Given small irregularities it appears likely that this work was also carried out by children. The publisher J. Povolozky ran a gallery in Paris in the 1920s and was known for his collaboration with Russian avant-garde artists Mikhail Larionov and Natalia Goncharova. KVK OCLC show copies one each at NYPL Princeton Stanford and UNC Chapel Hill without specifying which of the wrapper variants are held. Not at the Russian State or National Library. It is nearly impossible to provide a comprehensive flavor for this monthly magazine's contents in today's computer terms. These magazines go back to an era when the internet as we know it wasn't access to shared online data was through free local or costly long-distance bulletin boards modems supported 45.5-300 and if you were lucky 1200 baud speeds and information about what was happening in the personal computer field was pretty fragmented. Much of the discovery learning happened in local user groups who shared ideas enthusiasms hacks and techniques among themselves. Computers were new and exciting. Businesses providing support new software and hardware and supplies were blinking into existence every day all over the country as this new phenomenon took hold of everyone's imagination and blinking out just as quickly if they didn't stock the right stuff. It was a heady time to be a techie.<br/><br/>What follows is a fairly detailed look at the contents of the first issue in this grouping Oct 1983 to give you a flavor of what they are. The production values of both articles and advertisements varies wildly throughout. It is quite fun having lived through this time period myself to recognize certain dot-matrix printers amateur layout techniques and references to computers I've not seen in many many years. <br/><br/>The issue explains that "we are now in a combined format with CMTUG and M3G. This did not happen overnight! The planning began last May 1982 after the Computer Faire. We first formed the Michigan Computer Consortium MC2. This was intended as an umbrella organization for any existing club that wanted to join. The two primary functions of this umbrella are to provide a basis for planning the next Computer Faire and to share a bulk email permit. In an effort to bring about more cooperation between clubs and to disseminate additional information about computers it was decided that the three founding members of MC2 would move toward the production of a joint newsletter. Last month Sept 1983 CMTUG and M3G produced a joint newsletter. This month you will note that CHAOS has joined this great effort. It should be noted that each club has the option of printing their own newsletter at any given time if this newsletter ceases to meet the needs of its members." The President's Report by Ike Hudson goes on to discuss the mechanics of needing articles from member clubs the suggested editorial / submission process etc.<br/><br/>Contents include attempts much like speculation on Apple computers today to predict what Atari's next move is and notes that CP/M "is coming soon from Atari" and talks about the Atari 400 through 1400XL. It also includes a 2 1/2 page article introducing word processing reports on a fundraising auction hardware reviews Seikosha AT-100/GP-100 printer The Atari-Forum a new tollfree CHAOS dial-up bulletin board "What is a computer Part III" hacking a floppy disk drive to fix a warping problem and much else including a number of pages of advertising. TARICON 83 has a full page ad: "The largest Atari only computer show ever held" and billed as the "First Major Consumer Computer Convention Devoted Exclusively to Atari Home Computeres and related Support Products." with some 50 exhibit booths and 50 seminars and workshops. In addition to Atari news there is TRS-80 Heath/Zenith and other content.<br/><br/>One issue we looked at discussed networking. One of the most prevalent ones Sneakernet. Yes you guessed it. Taking diskettes machine to machine to transfer data. Another lists Current Versions of Apple II software as of Jan 1987. Apple LUG News. Claris tackles a game plan. AppleFest '87. A writer's tool 2 page review of new software from Optimized Systems Software Inc OSS. OSIG : Patching Wordstar. An explanation of "In the Public Domain" and what it means. You get the idea. Lots of great history.<br/><br/>We've been dealing in computer related material for years and this is one of the few chances we've had to purchase this sort of early computer group newsletter. While many advertisers remain over the timespan covered the contents change significantly and are a great source of material for anyone studying this time period in personal computers.
