So long ago as 1884 he began an investigation on the subject of urea formation and to the end of his life he was keenly interested in all metabolic problems. His interests were not confined to an interpretation of chemical physiology in any narrow sense. He was an investigator in many other physiological fields. He worked on the endocrine glands long before they became a popular subject of research; he directed investigations into dietary problems particularly of the poor and later into the relation of nutrition to the incidence of rickets and of growth. Publisher's original green pebble-grained cloth with decorative borders and titles in gilt to the upper board. Inscribed "Proof before letters" in pencil to the front pastedown. Illustrated with 6 fine proof engravings. A very good copy the binding square and secure with a 3cm split to the joints at the head of the spine shorter splits to the joints at the foot of the spine a few marks to the boards and wear to the corners. The contents with some faint creasing to page edges and some occasional light scattered foxing are otherwise in very good order. Signed and inscribed by Joseph Nöel Paton in ink to the head of the title page "To Miss Fergus / with all good wishes of / J. Nöel Paton / Jan. 1861". A beautifully illustrated edition of this Scottish border ballad of conflict love and loss with six full-page engravings by the Scottish artist illustrator and sculptor Sir Joseph Nöel Paton 1821-1901. </p><p>Initially studying at the Dunfermline Art Academy Paton spent most of his life in Scotland although did briefly attend the Royal Academy London in 1843. Whilst there Paton met John Everett Millais who asked him to join the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He declined this offer despite his continuing to paint in the Pre-Raphaelite style and became a painter of historical fairy and allegorical subjects. Paton also had a great interest - and significant expertise - in the fields of Scottish folklore and Celtic legend frequently choosing to paint or illustrate these subjects. His edition of 'The Dowie Dens O' Yarrow' clearly demonstrates this typically combining his Pre-Raphaelite tendencies with his love of Scottish history and culture.</p><p>The present copy - likely presented to a friend or patron - contains a wonderfully sharp suite of proof engravings and uncommonly is inscribed by Paton himself.
