The work was adopted by the French government to standardise nautical teaching in all the kingdom"s ports and was an essential reference for maritime training until the mid-19th century.</p> <p>The work was born in the context of French naval expansion under the ministry of Maréchal de Castries 1780-1787 a period of intense modernisation of the navy that included the creation of new hydrography schools and the adoption of standardised teaching methods. It summarises the fundamental knowledge of navigation at the time bringing together theoretical and practical precepts on nautical astronomy the use of instruments position calculations and the steering of vessels.
