Science Versus Nature etc. This important book in the history of mountaineering is the phtographer's first-hand account of his role and experience of the pioneering but unsucessful British expeditions to Everest in the 1920s. The second expedition is forever associated with the disappearance of George Mallory and Andrew Irvine near the summit. John Baptist Lucius Noel 1890 – 1989 was an English army officer mountaineer and filmmaker best known for his film of the 1924 Mount Everest expedition. Noel described as ‘a soldier by profession an artist in spirit and a brilliant camera technician by necessity' was born in 1890 and studied art in Florence entering the ambit of the great mountain photographer Vittorio Sella before passing into Sandhurst. Commissioned in 1908 he joined the East Yorkshire Regiment and was sent to India. In this book Noel includes chapters recounting his famous and illicit 1913 journey into Tibet then closed-off to the foreigners. Noel got to within 40 miles of Everest "hitherto approached by men of my race" and his lecture to the Royal Geographic Society in 1919 describing his secret sortie once again rekindled interest in an expedition to Everest. In a paper submitted to the Society about his Tibetan expedition Noel was among the first to suggest that Mount Everest should be climbed. After a year of diplomatic negotiations the Royal Geographical Society and the Alpine Club obtained permission from the 13th Dali Lama and sent their first expedition to Everest. The 1921 reconnaissance expedition under Col. Charles Howard-Bury spent several months in Tibet surveying mapping and photographing the region to find a possible northern route to the summit. Although he was unable to participate in the 1921 expedition due to military duties Noel advised on the photography that should take place. The photos subsequently taken by Mallory and the rest of the 1921 expedition team went on to aid and inform plans for future attempts to climb the mountain in 1922 and 1924. With the information gleaned from 1921 reconnaissance the British under Charles Bruce sent expeditions in 1922 and 1924. Noel was appointed the official photographer. Among the 14 cameras Noel took to Everest was a specially designed 40-lb cinematograph a glass-plate camera and several Vest-Pocket Kodaks. He even set up his own darkroom at base camp. Bruce referred to him as “St. Noel of the Cameras.” Noel also produced a short film Climbing Mount Everest 1922. In 1924 Noel formed a private company which paid for the photographic rights of that year's Everest expedition. Noel reached the North Col and used a specially adapted camera to film the ascent of the peak. A note from George Mallory to Noel was the last contact with the lost explorer before his body was discovered in 1999. Noel describes the last sighting of the climbers - telling the reader that one of the observing team "got a single fleeting glimpse of them within 600 feet of the summit and still going up. Then he saw nothing more. What happened no one knows. They never came back." p.262 The disappearance of Mallory and Irvine added drama to the film The Epic of Everest 1924 but it was not a commercial success but is now considered a classic of early documentary film. Noel brought to London a group of Tibetan monks which performed before screenings of the film; the performances of the "dancing lamas" offended Tibetan religious sensibilities and caused a breakdown in diplomatic relations between Britain and Tibet which became known as the "Affair of the Dancing Lamas" and which lasted nearly ten years cutting off the beckoning Everest from the still-enthralled mountaineering fraternity.
