Publisher's original green pebble-grained cloth with decorative borders and titles in gilt to the upper board. Inscribed "Proof before letters" in pencil to the front pastedown. Illustrated with 6 fine proof engravings. A good copy the binding secure with splitting to the joints at the head and foot a few marks to the boards and wear to the corners. The contents with cracking to the hinges at front and rear some faint creasing to page edges and some occasional light scattered foxing are otherwise in good order. Signed and inscribed by Joseph Nöel Paton in ink to the head of the title page "To Miss Fergus / with all good wishes of / J. Nöel Paton / Jan. 1861". A beautifully illustrated edition of this Scottish border ballad of conflict love and loss with six full-page engravings by the Scottish artist illustrator and sculptor Sir Joseph Nöel Paton 1821-1901.</p><p>Initially studying at the Dunfermline Art Academy Paton spent most of his life in Scotland although did briefly attend the Royal Academy London in 1843. Whilst there Paton met John Everett Millais who asked him to join the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He declined this offer despite his continuing to paint in the Pre-Raphaelite style and became a painter of historical fairy and allegorical subjects. Paton also had a great interest - and significant expertise - in the fields of Scottish folklore and Celtic legend frequently choosing to paint or illustrate these subjects. He is now known for his "Spectacle de la nature" a most popular work of natural history. Pluche son of a baker was born in Rheims in a street now named after him. He became a teacher of rhetoric. The Bishop of Laon made him head of the town's college a post he accepted to escape judicial consequences of opposing the papal bull Unigenitus 1713 He withdrew in 1749 to La Varenne-Saint-Maur near Paris where he died. His "Spectacle de la nature ou Entretiens sur les particularites de l'Histoire naturelle qui ont paru les plus propres à rendre les jeunes gens curieux et à leur former l'esprit" was published in 1732 and widely translated all over Europe. Although it influenced many to become naturalists it was a work of popularization not of science. Width: 4.75" Height: 7.75"Book Details: Condition / Notes: This is the second volume of the second part "Seconde Partie" with the subtitle "contenant ce qui regarde les dehors & l'interieur de la Terre." This antique volume is bound in quarter red leather and marbled paper-covered boards with raised bands and a gilt-lettered label to the spine. The book shows external wear with rubbing and loss of material to the covers. The spine displays sunning. Minor loss of material is visible at the slightly bumped corners. The binding is sound. A previous owner's name appears on the front flyleaf with bookdealer's notes in pencil on the pastedown. A number of pages display toning and/or foxing at the fore edge. This work is illustrated with a frontispiece and 36 mostly fold-out plates.
