‎Bentley's Miscellany. Contributions: by "Boz"‎

‎Bentley's Miscellany With First Appearance of "Oliver Twist" in Magazine Form DICKENS Charles. Bentley's Miscellany. Contributions: by "Boz". London: Richard Bentley 1837-39. First edition of this compilation and the first magazine appearance of Oliver Twist with all of the plates many oxidized. Five octavo volumes. Measures 220 x 137 mm. Early brown cloth blindstamped on covers and gilt-stamped on spines. All edges gilt. Spines stained with what looks like to be a sticker remnants that turned black. Otherwise a very good set of this scarce compilation. "Preface. There is much in Bentley's Miscellany that is good. The "Contributions by Boz" presented here "Oliver Twist" "Jack Sheppard" "Guy Fawkes" "Ingoldsby Legends" "Nights at Sea" and other stories Illustrated by George Cruikshank and John Leech are undoubtedly the best. To collect such into separate books direct from the Miscellany appeared to me desirable inasmuch as in any other form they are but re-issues of these now famous combinations of literature and art. John Waugh. Roundwood Baildon November 1889". HBS 67504. $750 Richard Bentley hardcover‎

‎Pickwick Papers‎

‎Dell Publishing Company New York: 1964. Softcover. Good condition. The Pickwick Papers and its ensuing popularity came about almost by accident. Dickens a struggling young writer was commissioned to write captions for a series of hunting prints being done by the artist Robert Seymour. Slowly the prints began to take a secondary role as Dickens allowed his imagination free rein. Before the project was completed Seymour committed suicide and a second artist had to be commissioned. By this time however The Pickwick Papers had taken London by storm. Dell Publishing Company, New York: 1964 paperback‎

‎The Life And Adventures Of Nicholas Nickleby‎

‎Macmillan & Co. Ltd London: 1954. Hardcover no dustjacket. Good condition. ‎Great Expectations‎

‎New American Library New York: 1963. Softcover. Fair condition. In this story of Pip a young man who means well but often does wrong Charles Dickens has created what many critics consider his best novel. This book has a colorful range of characters and action without excess of detail. A dramatic suspenseful plot replaces the episodic structure of the earlier novels. The sense of place and atmosphere is evocative and sharply defined. A searching reappraisal of the Victorian middle class. New American Library, New York: 1963 paperback‎

‎Standard‎

‎Two Issues of "The Standard" Where Dickens Gives Impression of Public Execution DICKENS Charles. The Standard. London: Charles Baldwin 1849. London: Nov. 16 1849 and Nov. 18 1849. Two issues. Measures 17 1/4 x 11 3/4 inches. Both issues discuss Dickens response and remarks to a public execution that he had witnessed known as the "Bermondsey Horror." This was first published in the London Times on Nov. 13 1849. The "Bermondsey Horror" was about a Swiss domestic servant by the name of Marie Manning who was convicted with her husband of the murder of her lover. Contains Dickensís reactions to the dual public execution of the Mannings. A married couple accused of killing Mrs. Manningís young lover the Mannings were hanged in public outside Horsemonger Lane Gaol. Dickens had gone there the night before waiting overnight expressly in order to watch the hanging and note the crowdís reaction. Though the letter expresses strong disapproval at public spectacles such as this execution at the same time it reveals Dickensís morbid curiosity and excitement at the event. It was here that Dickens wrote "I believe that a sight so inconceivably awful as the wickedness and levity of the immense crowd collected at that execution this morning could be imagined by no man and could be presented in no heathen land under the sun." He later based one of his charactersóMademoiselle Hortense Lady Dedlock's maid in Bleak House. Newspapers have a bit of browning to the edges as expected. Overall a very good piece of Dickens history. Eckel p. 227 HBS 67227. $750 Charles Baldwin unknown‎

‎Is She His Wife‎

‎First Obtainable Printing of "Is She His Wife or Something Singular" DICKENS Charles. Is She His Wife or Something Singular. A Comic Burletta in One Act. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company 1877. First obtainable printing. Sixteenmo. 80pp. Original brown cloth decoratively blocked in black and blind lettered in gilt and black. Off-white endpapers printed in red. A fine bright copy. Housed in a custom maroon cloth slipcase black morocco label on spine gilt-stamped. Apparently no copy exists of the first 1837 edition of this play Dickensí third published play first performed 6 March 1837; this is the only published work by Dickens to which this situation applies. The Gimbel collection has playbills for performances on 13 March and 6 April 1837. Eckel mentions that the only known copy of this edition was at Osgood for their 1877 reprint and was subsequently destroyed in a fire there in 1879. A census in Eckel finds only three extant copies of the 1873 British reprint. Thus the Osgood reprint of 1877 is the first obtainable printing of this piece. The Gimbel collection does have a copy of the 1873 English probably the one mentioned by Eckel as lacking the back wrapper; the extensive McQuire collection of American Dickens did not have a copy; Vander Poel had both green and brick cloth variants of the 1877 as did Gimbel. ‎Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club‎

‎With Forty-Three Engraved Plates DICKENS Charles. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club. London: Chapman & Hall 1837. First edition in book form of one of Dickensí greatest works mixed issue. Thick octavo 8 1/8 x 5 1/16 inches. xiv 1 directions 1 errata 609 1 blank pp. With forty-three illustrations including frontispiece and vignette title-page. With the seven plates by Seymour and the remaining ones by Phiz. Originally issued in 20 parts from April 1836 to November 1837. With half-title "Directions to Binder" and errata leaf. Includes marginal note on page 9 that was suppressed in later issues. Modern full brown morocco by Bayntum-Riviere gilt-stamped with a portrait of Dickens on front cover. Spine stamped in gilt with five raised bands. All edges gilt gilt-turn-ins. Housed in a brown cloth open end slipcase. A fine copy with clean plates. "From a literary standpoint the supremacy of this book has been. firmly established. It was written by Dickens when he was twenty-four and its publication placed the author on a solid foundation from which he never was removed. It is quite probable that only Shakespeareís Works the Bible and perhaps the English Prayer Book exceed "Pickwick Papers" in circulation" Eckel 17. "Never was a book received with more rapturous enthusiasm than that which greeted the Pickwick Papers!" Allibone I:500. Pickwick would be the first volume in which Dickens was acknowledged as the author rather than using his pen name "Boz." Gimbel A15. Hatton and Cleaver. Smith I:3 Dickens. ‎DICKENS Charles‎

‎Bleak House‎

‎A Colonial Copy in the Original Cloth DICKENS Charles. Bleak House. With Illustrations by H.K. Browne. London: Bradbury and Evans 1853. First edition colonial copy with first issue points as listed by Smith. Octavo 8 3/4 x 5 5/8 inches; 221 x 143 mm. i-viiviii-xxixii-xivxvxvi 1-624. 8 publisher's ads. Forty inserted plates with tissue guards including frontispiece and vignette title ten of which are "dark plates." With half-title. Original olive fine-diaper cloth with publisherís primary blindstamping spine lettered in gilt pale yellow coated endpapers. Largely unopened. Covers have some minor discoloration and spine is typically sunned but there is little other wear. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown. The plates are rather foxed some more than others but still very good. A standard copy in the publisherís primary cloth binding with two noteworthy exceptions: eight pages of Bradbury and Evans ads bound at back no ads usually present and a gilt imprint ìSydney W.R. Piddingtonî at foot of spine where usual copies are blank. The expected gilt on spine is in the usual typeface with the additional imprint in the same typeface and brightness. This suggests the Sydney imprint was done in England at the same time as the rest of the gilt rather than added by the distributor in Australia. Not in Gimbel; Carr cites exactly such a copy as this with eight pages of ads and additional Sydney imprint on spine and Smith cites Carrís copy. The internal foxing may possibly be due to the moisture in the air on the long sea voyage in 1853. In all this is quite an uncommon Dickens volume for collectors who thought they had everything. Smith I 10. Carr B1403. Compare Gimbel A131. HBS 67079. $3.500 Bradbury and Evans hardcover‎

With Illustrations by George Cruikshank Phiz &c. London: Henry Colburn Publisher 1841. First edition second state with Palmer imprint on ii and ìyoung publisherî corrected on iii in Volume I. Three twelvemo volumes. i-iiiivvvivii-viii 12-323324; i-iv 12-298 i-viii ads; i-iv 1-34-378 i-iv ads. Fourteen engraved plates including two by Cruikshank six by Phiz and six by R.J. Hammerton. Previous owner's ink inscription on front-free endpapers of Vol. II. and III. Occasional slight offsetting and periodic edge-browning or foxing to plates. Overall a very good copy. ìJohn Macrone was the publisher of Dickensí first book and when he died he left a widow and several children in comparatively destitute circumstances. As a business man he drove what to the young author at that time was a rather hard bargain over a copyright. But the appeal made on behalf of a needy family Dickens could not resist. He was in the middle of ëMaster Humphreyís Clockí and regardless of this he undertook the management of ëThe Picnic Papersí the proceeds of which were to alleviate hardships. He wrote the Introduction rewrote his unacted farce ëThe Lamplighterí altering the name to ëThe Lamplighterís Storyí edited the balance of the book excepting the third volume and was enabled to place in the hands of the widow the sum of £300î Eckel. Matted framed and glazed. Picture depicts Uriah Heep looking like he is up to something with his hands crossed and a sly look on his face. He is standing next to a desk and chair with what looks like a newspaper in the background. A very charming piece. Uriah Heep is a fictional character created by Charles Dickens in David Copperfield.
