Hard Times. For These Times.
London: Bradbury & Evans 1854. First edition in book form of Dickens' attack on the living conditions of England's mid-19th century industrial cities. Octavo original green cloth blindstamped with gilt titles to the spine including the "Price 5/-" in gilt at the base of the spine and p.244 misnumbered as 44. In near fine condition with the half-title present which is often lacking. Housed in a custom three quarter morocco and chemise slipcase. Initially published serially in Household Words between April and August of 1854 Hard Times was published in book form almost immediately following the final serial in 1854. Viewed as a departure from Dickens' previous tales the work presents what was to become an increasingly somber picture of contemporary society in Dickens' works. Critics such as George Bernard Shaw and Thomas Macaulay focused on Dickens' treatment of trade unions and his post-Industrial Revolution pessimism in regards to the divide between capitalist mill owners and undervalued workers during the Victorian era. F. R. Leavis a great admirer of the book included it - but not as a whole - in his Great Tradition of English novels. Bradbury & Evans hardcover books

In Little Dorrit Dickens mounts his single most ferocious onslaught against England and English society; against its government against its financiers against its artists and even against its ordinary citizens who at least in Bleeding Heart Yard believed that .foreigners were always immoral. that foreigners had no independent spirit." Ackroyd 758. Perhaps unsurprisingly many reviewers reviled the book upon its publication. Dickens' friend Hans Christian Andersen advised the author to ignore the critics: "They are forgotten in a week and your book stands and lives" Ackroyd 780. And indeed Little Dorrit does: not only a commercial success in its day poor press notwithstanding but also esteemed now as a "wonderfully rich novel-- rich in ideas rich in characterization rich in incident and written in a richly imaginative prose. Many modern critics regard it as Dickens' masterpiece" Watts 108. Bradbury and Evans unknown books

Master Humphrey's Clock.
London: Chapman and Hall 1840. First edition of this collection of short stories which originally appeared as a weekly periodical of the same name. Large octavo 3 volumes bound into one in three quarters morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles and ruling to the spine in six compartments between raised gilt bands marbled endpapers all edges marbled three engraved frontispieces illustrated by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne. In very good condition. Armorial bookplate to the pastedown name. Master Humphrey's Clock originally appeared in the form of a weekly periodical published between April of 1840 and December of 1841. Entirely written and edited by Dickens the magazine included both short stories and two novels The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. Many of the short stories acted as frame stories to the novels and although Dickens' original artistic intent was to keep the short stories and the novels together he himself cancelled Master Humphrey's Clock before 1848 and described in a preface to The Old Curiosity Shop that he wished the story to not be tied down to the miscellany it began within. Most later anthologies published the short stories and the novels separately. However the short stories and the novels were published in 1840 in three bound volumes under the title Master Humphrey's Clock which retains the full and correct ordering of texts as they originally appeared. The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby.

Octavo bound in full morocco by Morrell ornate inlay to the spine front and rear panels raised bands inner dentelles illustrated with 40 plates. In fine condition. Housed in a custom slipcase. An exceptional presentation. In 1867 Charles Dickens began his second American reading tour at Boston's Tremont Temple where an enthusiastic audience delighted in some of his most notable works members of the audience included legendary literary stars such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Although Dickens was in declining health he embarked on an ambitious travel schedule across the United States. Dickens returned to Boston once more before concluding his U.S. tour in New York City. When Charles Dickens arrived in Boston on November 19 1867 the celebrated English author spent several days at the Parker House hotel recuperating from the voyage. As conscientious a performer as he was a writer Dickens had prepared diligently for his performances redrafting and memorizing key passages from his books especially for these engagements. He used a book only as a prop; he was so familiar with the material that he could improvise with ease. However during his 1867-1868 tour he was plagued with Flu-like symptoms insomnia and an inflammation of his foot which forced him to walk with a cane. During his last tours in 1868 Dickens confined much of his performances to the New England area. Dickens was grateful for the income he desperately needed from his readings which generated $140000 close to $2000000 today; but he longed for home. On April 8 1868 Dickens gave the last performance of the tour. Prolonged applause followed the reading. He closed by telling the audience "In this brief life of ours it is sad to do almost anything for the last time. Ladies and gentlemen I beg most earnestly most gratefully and most affectionately to bid you each and all farewell." He died two years later having written 14 novels several of which are considered classics of English literature. Chapman and Hall hardcover books

Octavo original green cloth blindstamped with gilt titles to the spine including the "Price 5/-" in gilt at the base of the spine and p.244 misnumbered as 44. From the library of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' stepfather Hugh D. Auchincloss. Auchincloss married Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' mother Janet Lee Bouvier in 1942. His great grandfather John W. Auchincloss built the 28-room Victorian mansion Hammersmith Farm in 1887 which would later become Jaqueline's childhood home and the site of the reception of her 1953 wedding to John F. Kennedy. With the previous owner Albert Henry Wiggin's card laid in. American banker Albert H. Wiggin amassed a large fine art and book collection in the early to mid 20th century much of which he later donated to the Boston Museum of Fine Art and Boston Public Library. In very good condition with the half-title present which is often lacking. Housed in a custom chemise slipcase.

First edition first issue of one of Dickens' most enduring works with p. 213 misnumbered "113" the signature mark "b" at the foot of the plate list and the misspelling "affetcionately" on line 12 p. 134. Octavo bound in three quarters leather over marbled boards gilt titles and tooling to the spine raised bands marbled endpapers. Sixteen plates after H.K. Browne including frontispiece and title vignette. In near fine condition. The most famous and possibly the most popular of Dickens's novels A Tale of Two Cities shows a master of dramatic narrative extracting gold from the ore of history. If the bloody tableau of the French Revolution were not in itself sufficient for a dozen novels Dickens added to it a professional resurrectionist an authentic ogress and an antihero as convincingly flawed as any in modern literature. "Dickens had always admired Carlyle's History of the French Revolution and asked him to recommend suitable books from which he could research the period; in reply Carlyle sent him a 'cartload' of volumes. So great was Dickens' enthusiasm for the story that it had indeed 'taken in possession' of him. The force of the novel springs from its exploration of darkness and death but its beauty derives from Dickens' real sense of transcendence from his ability to see the sweep of destiny" Ackroyd 858. The last of Dickens' books to be illustrated by H.K. Browne "Phiz" with 16 engraved plates by him. "Browne for 23 years responsible for all the etchings which had so successfully embellished these Dickens' books produced his last drawings for the present work. Bradbury and Evans the printers of all and publishers of five of Dickens' works as issued in monthly parts had ceased to act in this dual capacity after completion of Little Dorrit. resulting in the return of Chapman and Hall as publishers of this and all succeeding works" Hatton & Cleaver 333. The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
London: Chapman and Hall 1870. First edition of Dickens' final novel. Octavo bound in full early 20th century morocco gilt titles and tooling to the spine double gilt ruled raised gilt bands all edges gilt inner dentelles marbled endpapers. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Dickens with tissue guard 12 engraved plates. In near fine condition with very light rubbing and some toning to the pages. Charles Dickens' novels regularly revolved around masks dual identities and other secrets. The Mystery of Edwin Drood however "enlarged and strengthened such matters in the pursuit of a larger vision a vision which depicts the 'lanes of light' between the dark pillars of a crypt and which reflects upon 'that mysterious fire which lurks in everything" Ackroyd 1056. Unfortunately at the time of his death on June 9 1870 Dickens had written only six parts of the book three of which had been published. The remaining three were published posthumously. Dickens had so closely guarded the plot's outlines even from his closest friends that to this day the identity of Drood's killer remains a topic for speculation discussion and debate. "There are few of Dickens' stories which are superior in the matter of composition. one of the best unfinished mystery stories in literature" Eckel 96. This tantalizing tale has been adapted in film and television several times. Chapman and Hall unknown books
