‎THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD and Some Uncollected Pieces‎

‎1870. With Illustrations. Boston: Fields Osgood & Co. 1870. Original green cloth. First American Edition second and usual issue with added material -- of the tale left unfinished at the time of Dickens's death in June 1870. The scarce earlier issue withOUT the "Uncollected Pieces" was bound only in wrappers; furthermore the subsequent additions are just that -- the text of DROOD is exactly the same in both issues. This has led some bibliographers to speculate that the two issues may be from the same printing with only a change in the title page: Smith noting that he could not find a publication date for the first issue says "Perhaps such copies represent a prepublication state rather than an issue and were published simultaneously with copies which had the uncollected pieces.". The "Uncollected Pieces" consist of James T. Fields's introductory "Some Memories of Charles Dickens" plus Dickens's "George Silverman's Explanation" "Holiday Romance" "Sketches of Young Couples" and "New Uncommercial Samples" plus "The Will of Charles Dickens." Since 1867 Ticknor & Fields and then Fields Osgood had been Dickens's authorized publisher in America; they had serialized DROOD in their weekly Every Saturday and then published this book in early September. Ticknor & Fields had specifically commissioned Dickens to write "Holiday Romance" so that it could appear in their children's periodical Our Young Folks in 1868. Harper also serialized DROOD in a monthly Dickens supplement to Harper's Weekly but did not get their book edition out until late September. This copy is in the primary binding state -- 9-7/16 inches tall with the FO&Co emblem on the covers and at the foot of the spine -- and it is green one of three colors without priority. The volume is in near-fine condition very minor wear at the spine ends. Smith pp 412-416; Podeschi Yale A156; Carr UTexas B278; Wilkins p. 35.

hardcover‎

‎A CURIOUS DANCE ROUND A CURIOUS TREE‎

‎1860. London: St. Luke's Hospital 1860. Original pale pink wrappers. First Edition second and usual issue -- with the final paragraph in bold not like the rest of the text with the wrapper pink not mauve -- though all are today faded with the front cover title followed by a comma not by a period and with the front cover border decorative only at the corners not all 'round. Dickens describes the wretched conditions inside St. Luke's Hospital "established in 1751 for the treatment and care of lunatics" and in particular the "very sad and touching spectacle" of the annual Christmas Ball there dancing around the Christmas tree. He actually wrote the original piece in 1852 at which time it appeared in his Household Words Dickens's authorship was questioned until 1913 when the original manuscript -- in his hand -- turned up. It is here published in book form for the first time eight years later when Dickens gave permission for the hospital to use it as a fundraising appeal. The hospital added two items to update the piece: an article about the 1860 Ball from the "Times" plus a brief article "Contrast between 1852 and 1860" in which the hospital asserts that many of the deficiencies cited by Dickens have since been addressed. The results of the initial mailing were not good -- which is why for this second issue the final paragraph the actual appeal was highlighted in bold. This is a fine copy of this very fragile item with scarcely any wear soil or foxing; as usual the pink wrappers have faded. Tipped to a corner of the inside front wrapper is an old but hyperbolic catalogue description. As with almost all copies there is a vertical crease because the booklet was folded vertically when the fundraising appeal was mailed out in narrow envelopes. Uncommon in this condition. Podeschi Yale B216 second copy; Carr U of Texas B465; Eckel pp 188-191. Housed in a cloth clamshell case lined with felt.

hardcover‎

‎1837. By Boz. With Other Tales and Sketches by other authors from Bentley's Miscellany and The Library of Fiction. Philadelphia: Carey Lea and Blanchard 1837. Original drab boards with rose cloth spine and printed label. First Edition of this early collection of tales by various authors -- which constitutes one of Dickens's earliest American appearances in book form. According to Podeschi 2000 copies were printed in April 1837. This Dickens tale was not collected in an all-Dickens volume until ten years after his death -- in THE MUDFOG PAPERS 1880. Also included in this volume is "An Evening of Visits" by "J. Fennimore Cooper Esq. sic". This volume is in very good-plus condition closed tear in front free endpaper rose cloth faded as always slight rubbing of the spine label; one cannot encounter these Philadelphia volumes from the 1830s in much better condition. ‎A CURIOUS DANCE ROUND A CURIOUS TREE‎

‎1860. the very scarce first issue London: St. Luke's Hospital 1860. Original pale mauve wrappers. First Edition first issue -- with the final paragraph in the same type as the rest of the text and not in bold type with the wrapper mauve and not pink -- though all are today faded with the front cover title followed by a period not by a comma and with the front cover border decorative on all sides not just at the corners. ‎"The Tuggs's at Ramsgate" and "A Little Talk about Spring and the Sweeps" by "Boz." In: THE LIBRARY OF FICTION‎

‎1836. monthly issues in wrappers Family Story-Teller; consisting of Tales Essays and Sketches of Character Original and Selected. London: Chapman and Hall n.d. 1836. Six issues including everything Dickens contributed of the original fourteen in original printed wrappers. First Appearances of two of Dickens's very earliest stories. Dickens contributed only these two sketches by "Boz" to this monthly literary periodical. The first issue undated but April 1836 included his "The Tuggs's at Ramsgate"; also included are two plates by Robert Seymour illustrating this story. The third issue two months later included his "A Little Talk about Spring and the Sweeps"; one of the two plates in this issue by R.W. Buss relates to this story. In mid-1837 all fourteen of the monthly issues would be published as the two-volume anthology titled THE LIBRARY OF FICTION. These were the only two "sketches by Boz" that appeared in this periodical but many others appeared in half a dozen other periodicals. In February 1836 Dickens's first book the two-volume SKETCHES BY BOZ was published by John Macrone -- containing 37 "Sketches" but not of course these two as they had not yet appeared. In December 1836 the "Second Series" of SKETCHES BY BOZ was published in one volume 21 more which included "A Little Talk about Spring and the Sweeps" but re-titled "The First of May." With the book publication of both Series of SKETCHES BY BOZ all of Dickens's periodical appearances had been published -- with the sole exception of "The Tuggs's at Ramsgate." SKETCHES BY BOZ was issued in monthly parts after book publication at which time this oversight was corrected -- as "The Tuggs's at Ramsgate" was added in Parts XV-XVI. This is actually a group of six of the fourteen original issues -- the first four plus the sixth and eighth "Boz" is represented in only the first and third; other writers include G.P.R. James Edward Mayhew and Douglas Jerrold. As an aside the monthly issues of THE LIBRARY OF FICTION started up the same month as the serialization of Dickens's next book PICKWICK PAPERS -- so the rear covers of these LIBRARY issues advertise that book with its two initial illustrators Seymour and Buss Seymour would soon be dead and Buss would soon be fired -- opening the door for Hablot K. Browne a.k.a. "Phiz". Speaking of "Phiz" accompanying a Mayhew tale in the sixth monthly issue is his depiction of "that notorious and daring burglar by name John Smith": Phiz's depiction of Smith dressed in a striped waistcoat has been identified as the visual prototype of the character about to join the cast of PICKWICK PAPERS -- Tony Weller -- who overnight would turn that serial from a dismal failure into a huge success see Kitton Dickens and His Illustrators p. 62. Condition is very good to near-fine minor edge-wear spines slightly rolled but the wrappers are clean and whole and the plates -- two per issue -- are sharp and bright. Although the two-volume THE LIBRARY OF FICTION is not overly scarce especially rebound these individual wrappered issues are not just scarce but rare. Podeschi E121; see Smith I p. 15; Eckel pp 137-139 who noted in 1932 "the excessive scarcity of a complete run of the original fourteen parts is well known". This is the Sherwood / Davies / Drizen copy housed in a handsome morocco-backed clamshell case with inner chemise by The Chelsea Bindery.

unknown‎

‎IS SHE HIS WIFE‎

‎1877. or Something Singular. A Comic Burletta in One Act. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company 1877. Original green cloth decorated in black. First "Collectible" Edition being a volume in Osgood's diminutive "Vest-Pocket Series." We say first "collectible" edition of this play first performed in 1837 because the only known copy of the first edition from which Osgood printed this edition was destroyed in the Boston fire of 1879 and there are only five known copies three of which are in institutions of the wrappered second edition London circa 1869-1871. This copy is in bright green cloth; others are in terra-cotta cloth without priority. It is a fine bright copy -- the only flaw being a short closed tear in the edge of the front free endpaper the front paste-down bears the armorial bookplate of Courtenay F. Wilson 1841-1915. ‎Dickens Charles Overs John‎

‎EVENINGS OF A WORKING MAN‎

‎1844. a "probably unique" binding being the Occupation of His Scanty Leisure: with a Preface relative to the Author by Charles Dickens. London: T.C. Newby 1844. 3 pp ads. Original blind-stamped olive green cloth spine lettered in gilt. First Edition. Overs was a carpenter who "had shown some literary ability" Eckel but was now fatally ill with tuberculosis; Dickens assisted him in getting his writings published as a financial aid for Overs's soon-to-be widow and children. The book is dedicated to the doctor who was caring for Overs. Dickens's nine-page Preface exhorts readers a bit patronizingly to accept "working men" into the class of literary aesthetes. The book itself undoubtedly was partly designed by Dickens as both the red-and-blue-ink title page and the original embossed brown cloth and gilt page edges for the standard cloth binding bear a definite resemblance to his own A CHRISTMAS CAROL then just published; it was also Dickens who recommended the publisher Newby Carr A32. Incidentally in 1844 the publisher T.C. Newby was an "unscrupulous. incorrigible rogue" Lathbury of little account; three years later though still a rogue he would hit it big with WUTHERING HEIGHTS and with Anthony Trollope's first novel. As noted above the standard binding for this book is brown cloth with gilt page edges; this copy however is in blind-stamped olive green cloth with the page edges plain; one of the former owners see list below has penciled "uncut -- probably unique." Condition is very good-plus some wear at the spine edges a few marks and droplet-marks. Podeschi Yale B151; Carr U of Texas B606 pink cloth; Eckel pp 146-147 nobody cites this binding. The likely unique-ness of this copy accounts for the remarkable provenance of this copy: after the armorial bookplates of John Ashton and of C.E. Stewart this volume went via Maggs Bros to Comte Alain de Suzannet bookplate then to Kenyon Starling bookplate then to William Self bookplate and finally to Lawrence Drizen no bookplate.

hardcover‎

‎Thackeray William M. & Dickens Charles‎

‎THE LOVING BALLAD OF LORD BATEMAN‎

‎1839. Illustrated by George Cruikshank. London: Charles Tilt 1839. 4 pp undated ads. Original dark green cloth wrappers pictorially decorated in gilt. First Edition first issue of this unusual collaboration between Thackeray Dickens and Cruikshank. The volume consists of 31 quatrains of amusing verse illustrated with Cruikshank's eleven full-page etchings as well as the front cover design. According to Van Duzer "It is now generally conceded that Thackeray wrote the text and that the notes and preface were by Dickens." For Thackeray it was quite early work: it was only the preceding year that was published THE YELLOWPLUSH CORRESPONDENCE the "first publication in book form of any of Thackeray's writings" Parrish. As for Dickens this fell just after OLIVER TWIST at about the time NICHOLAS NICKLEBY was being serialized. Cruikshank the only one of the three identified in the book was the veteran of the group. This copy is of the first issue with "wine" in stanza v; in the second issue this was changed to "vine" even though the subject at hand is wine in order to maintain the cross-pronunciation of "w's" and "v's" as in "wery best vine" in stanza xiii. Also the pagination of the verse pages is in the center of each page; in later copies it was moved to the corner as on the preface pages. Cohn describes the cloth wrapper as green ribbed cloth but the copies we have seen are in this green diaper cloth. This copy like a couple of others we have seen has four pages two leaves of ads -- rather than the usual eight pages / four leaves. It is in near-fine condition very minor cover soil faint creases in the cloth from its original gluing to the endpaper -- quite remarkable condition for such a fragile volume in its 180th year. Cohn 243; Van Duzer 124. Housed in a full morocco case lettered in gilt.

hardcover‎

‎AMERICAN NOTES for General Circulation. "The New World."‎

‎1842. First American Edition. New-York: J. Winchester Publisher November 1842. Original self-wrappers bound into very early plain blue wrappers. "First American Edition" -- second impression. As first put forth in a 1975 article by Peter Bracher and soon to be confirmed in Walter Smith's upcoming bibliography this edition 12-1/2 cents was published at 2:00 PM on Monday November 7 1842 -- just TWO HOURS before the "Brother Jonathan Extra" edition 12-1/2 cents managed to get out on the streets. Harper got its edition 12-1/2 cents out by early or mid-afternoon on the following day Tuesday the 8th and Lea & Blanchard of Philadelphia had an edition first 25 cents then 12-1/2 on the streets by Wednesday the 9th. L&B was the only one of these American publishers to have had a prior agreement with Dickens for publication in America -- but Dickens was so upset by the lack of an international copyright law he forewent any such negotiations -- which is why none of these publishers had advance sheets and all simply had to wait in the harbor for the first boat to arrive with the UK edition published in October and then rush to press. The Winchester publication occupies 46 pages of double-column text followed by one leaf of ads; it was originally issued without an outer wrapper. This copy is actually from Winchester's second impression not so stated -- which came out around November 19th a few minor differences include having "Number 3233" printed correctly in the heading and having "THE END" centered on page 46. Some later copies of this impression came with a decorative wrapper but not this one; the first owner "William B. Stafford 1842 Waterville N.Y." added this plain blue wrapper which he quickly signed and dated thrice. This wrapper could easily be removed but in our opinion its early dated signatures add something. Condition is very good the only flaw being where extra stitching was used to add the blue wrapper; it may be that there was initially a more substantial binding for which these blue wrappers served as endpapers. In any case -- this is a scarce piece. Bracher Bibliographical Society of America Vol 69 pp 365-376; curiously not in Podeschi Yale; Carr UTexas B4772; Wilkins pp 23-24.

unknown‎

‎"The Tuggs's at Ramsgate." In: THE TUGGS'S AT RAMSGATE by "Boz."‎

‎1837. Together with Other Tales by Distinguished Writers. Philadelphia: Carey Lea & Blanchard 1837. Original light grey-green boards with red cloth spine and printed label. First American Edition being a volume in the "Library of Fiction" limited to 1000 copies issued in January 1837. The volume consists of the title tale by Dickens followed by nine other tales by other writers. This is the only one of "Boz"'s tales that having appeared in a British periodical did not then appear in one of the two book series of SKETCHES BY BOZ see Smith I p. 15 note 2. Instead it appeared in the British "Library of Fiction" in April 1836 and was not included in SKETCHES BY BOZ until that title was issued in monthly parts Nov 1837 through June 1839. In America Carey Lea & Blanchard published SKETCHES BY BOZ second series a month or two after this -- not including "Tuggs's" -- and then combined "Tuggs's" into a reprint of that volume in June of the same year. This is a good-plus copy general soil and edge-wear notably to the rear joint label rubbed but still legible half of rear free endpaper missing. This is acceptable condition for a book that is so scarce in its original binding -- as these 1830s Philadelphia volumes were bound up using extremely delicate cheap materials. Podeschi Yale B1; Wilkins p. 11 reference to the "Select Library of Fiction". Housed in a clamshell case with leather label.

hardcover‎

‎OUR MUTUAL FRIEND‎

‎1864. With Illustrations by Marcus Stone. In 20-in-19 monthly serial parts. London: Chapman and Hall 1864-1865. Original light blue-green wrappers. First Edition of Dickens's last complete novel in which Greed and The River Thames are two of the principal characters. OUR MUTUAL FRIEND first appeared in these twenty monthly serial parts the last one being a double-number from May 1864 through November 1865; it was then published in two volumes serial readers were encouraged to have their parts so bound up with the two volumes' preliminary leaves here provided in Parts X and XIX/XX. This set does have the one issue-point in the first state: the lack of the printer's imprint at the bottom of Part I's front wrapper. As Hatton & Cleaver point out an absolutely-complete set of OUR MUTUAL FRIEND in parts has the most advertising matter of any Dickens novel -- 320 pages of preliminary ads plus 89 different ads and slips inserted at the rear. This set is remarkably complete -- lacking only the often-missing Economic Life Assurance preliminary inset in Part XIV though it's present in XIX/XX and the "At the Bar" preliminary slip in Part XVIII. ALL of the terminal ads are present though about 1/4 of one leaf is torn away -- including the uncommon "Foreign Bank Notes" slip in the final part. Condition is overall very good-plus with most of the parts showing only minor edge-wear and some wear/repair of the paper spines. The rear wrapper of the final part shows more wear than others; atypically that is not true of the front wrapper of the first part -- and in fact the first part's leaves remain unopened. With the exception of minor foxing on the final part's four plates all forty plates are clean and bright. Hatton & Cleaver pp 343-370. Housed in an attractive slip-case with full leather spine decorated and paneled in gilt with inner chemise.

hardcover‎

‎A Complete Set of the Nine Extra Christmas Numbers of ALL THE YEAR ROUND‎

‎1859. London: Office of All The Year Round / Chapman & Hall 1859-1867. In nine volumes. Original self-wrappers first four and blue printed wrappers last five -- as issued. First Editions of all nine "Extra Christmas Numbers" of this periodical that Charles Dickens founded and edited for its nine years of existence. Previously he had likewise founded Household Words which likewise lasted nine years -- and which has nine Extra Christmas Numbers as well. In addition to editing these tales Dickens also wrote a portion of them -- specifically per Eckel: Christmas 1859: THE HAUNTED HOUSE. Dickens wrote "The Mortals in the House" "The Ghost in Master B's Room" and "The Ghost in the Corner Room" as well as most of the other opening paragraphs. Christmas 1860: A MESSAGE FROM THE SEA. Dickens wrote Chapters I II and V plus passages in the others; the rest is by Wilkie Collins. Christmas 1861: TOM TIDDLER'S GROUND. Dickens wrote Chapters I VI and VII. Christmas 1862: SOMEBODY'S LUGGAGE. Dickens wrote "His Leaving It Til Called For" "His Boots" "His Brown-Paper Parcel" "His Wonderful End" plus part of "His Umbrella." Christmas 1863: MRS. LIRRIPER'S LODGINGS. Dickens wrote Chapters I and VII. Christmas 1864: MRS. LIRRIPER'S LEGACY. Dickens again wrote Chapters I and VII. Christmas 1865: DR. MARIGOLD'S PRESCRIPTIONS. Dickens wrote Chapters I VI and VIII. Christmas 1866: MUGBY JUNCTION. Dickens wrote "Barbox Brothers" "Barbox Brothers and Co." "Main Line" and "No. 1 Branch Line." Christmas 1867: NO THOROUGHFARE. Dickens wrote the Overture Act III plus parts of Act I and Act IV; Wilkie Collins wrote the rest. As for condition all nine issues are near-fine just some very minor wear to the edges the last with a damp-mark at the top of the front wrapper; the fourth eighth and ninth annual issues still have unopened leaves. The last one includes the loosely-inserted ad leaf for the Grand Christmas Number of the periodical "London Society." It is very tough to assemble all nine of these in this condition. ‎OLIVER TWIST;‎

‎1838. our finest copy evah or The Parish Boy's Progress. By "Boz." In Three Volumes. London: Richard Bentley 1838. 4 pp Vol I undated ads; 2 preliminary pp Vol III undated ads. Original purplish-brown fine-diaper cloth. First Edition first issue of this classic novel that has also been a hit as a Broadway musical. This is the "true first edition" not merely the "first edition in book form." Unlike most of Dickens's novels OLIVER TWIST was not first issued in monthly serial parts; it did appear in "Bentley's Miscellany" magazine from February 1837 through April 1839 but this three-volume edition was published in November 1838. OLIVER TWIST was finally issued in ten serial parts in 1846 -- one of the scarcest "Dickens in parts." Within a week after initial publication copies began to be issued at Dickens's insistence with his name on the title pages rather than "Boz" and with the "church" plate replacing the "fireside" plate. This copy is of the first issue -- with "Boz" on the title pages and with the "fireside" plate at the end of Vol III. This set is in the primary fine-diaper cloth some copies are in horizontally-ribbed cloth of the same color but with a different arabesque design -- precedence unknown. This copy does have the "London/Bentley" imprint at the foot of the spines where some copies are blank; it has been surmised that the blank binding is earlier if only because Bentley would have been more likely to add than to remove his name from the volumes -- though precedence is far from certain. Lastly the list of illustrations in Vol I is present in this copy: again it is uncertain whether its absence or its presence was the earlier state though it is possible that Bentley may have begun inserting it when he realized that George Cruikshank's name had otherwise been omitted from the publication. Bear in mind that the second issue with Dickens's name on the title pages was out within a week of the first; therefore all of these questions of precedence among issue points involve only a few days. This set is in FINE condition: there is essentially no external wear to the cloth the spine gilt remains bright the original yellow endpapers exhibit only the merest hint of cracking there is scarcely any foxing at all on the textual leaves or plates. in fact the ONLY notable flaw is that on two covers there is a faint partial glass-ring. Period. This is the best copy we have offered in our 35 years in business. Smith I pp 28-37; Gimbel A27; Eckel pp 59-61; Carter BV p. 107 and MBV p. 7. Housed in a morocco-backed clamshell case.

hardcover‎

‎MR. NIGHTINGALE'S DIARY‎

‎1877. A Farce in One Act. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company 1877. Original terra-cotta cloth decorated in black. First "Collectible" Edition of this play first performed in 1851. We say first "collectible" because there are only four known copies of the original 1851 pamphlet; supposedly a fifth from which Osgood printed this edition was destroyed in the Boston fire of 1879. This is a volume in the publisher's "Vest Pocket Series" so named for its diminutive size a second Dickens "comic burletta" was published in this series the same year -- IS SHE HIS WIFE. This copy is terra-cotta in color; others are green without priority. It is a bright near-fine copy minor rubbing at the tips one small mark on the fore-edge of the leaves -- quite uncommon in this condition. Eckel pp 64-5.

hardcover‎

‎HARD TIMES‎

‎1854. a handsome copy A Novel. New York: Harper & Brothers 1854. Original blind-stamped blue cloth with gilt-decorated spine. First American Edition in cloth. HARD TIMES first appeared in America in the weekly "Household Words" from May through September 1854. Toward the end of that run on August 8th the American publisher of "Household Words" T.L. McElrath published the entire book in wrappers at 25 cents. One day later Harper came out with their own wrappered edition at half the price so as to kill McElrath's -- which it did. Four months later on December 22nd Harper came out with this attractively-bound edition totally reset with 292 pages of text -- the first American hardbound edition. This is a handsome copy just about fine very slight rubbing at the extremities occasional light foxing within. Smith pp 329-330; curiously not in Gimbel A139 is the 101-page edition in wrappers.

hardcover‎
