Later maroon half calf spine with raised bands old gilt lettered label preserved to one panel and simply gilt decorated to the others patterned endpapers with earlier yellow endpapers within the latter with a 20th century ownership inscription plus a another's booklabel the original flyleaf with a gift inscription dated 1844. Frontispiece engraved title and 41 plates. The frontispiece and title heavily browned the other plates with occasional foxing otherwise very good. Smith I 3 noting this edition on page 27. A late issue with the engraved title still reading 1837 but the printed title 1838 and still featuring many of the issue points called for by Smith for the first issue. London: Chapman and Hall 1842. First edition first issue. Two volumes. 8vo. xii 308; viii 306 6 pp. a few gatherings unopened. Publisher's blind stamped cloth gilt lettered to the spine early armorial bookplate of a Henry Birkbeck to the front pastedowns and his lightly pencilled ownership inscription to the front free endpaper of volume I the discreet contemporary ticket of the bookseller Fletcher of Norwich to the front of the same volume. Some fading to the spine a very small superficial split to the cloth at foot of the lower joint of volume I though it remains sounds and the set is very good overall. The result of a four month lecture tour of the States and Canada during which Dickens' opinions of the new world fell steadily. On his return it proved popular on this side of the Atlantic while American reviews were unanimously hostile Emerson noting "Truth is not his object for a single instant.". Dickens composed a mollifying Preface which was removed at the last minute and not published until after his death. In it he states "I went there expecting greater things than I found. Coming home with a corrected and sobered judgement I consider myself no less bound to do justice to what. I found to be the truth". Smith II 3. London: Chapman and Hall hardcover

London: Richard Bentley 1838. First Edition; three volumes; first issue; with “Boz†on the title pages and with the “fireside†plate in volume three. Publisher’s cloth; variant state binding with “London/ Bentley†at the foot of the spines according to Smith not a point of any significance; some cloth fading minor wear and spotting; slight ink marks on one title page; a very clean set with only occasional spots and foxing; in a custom quarter morocco slipcase with chemises. The "fireside" plate was one of several illustrations by Cruikshank that were rushed to complete the book. Reviewing the plates before publication Dickens objected to this illustration and ordered a new one prepared. Early copies have this original plate as well as "Boz" on the title page which also displeased the author. The book was published on November 9 1838 and changes were made in copies prepared between the 9th and the 16th. Richard Bentley hardcover

Charles John Huffam Dickens 7 February 1812 - 9 June 1870 was the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era and he remains popular responsible for some of English literature's most iconic characters. Many of his novels with their recurrent concern for social reform first appeared in magazines in serialised form a popular format at the time. Unlike other authors who completed entire novels before serialisation Dickens often created the episodes as they were being serialized. The practice lent his stories a particular rhythm punctuated by cliffhangers to keep the public looking forward to the next instalment. The continuing popularity of his novels and short stories is such that they have never gone out of print. His work has been praised for its mastery of prose and unique personalities by writers such as George Gissing and G. K.
