Dickens Charles
A Tale of Two Cities.
London: Chapman and Hall 1859. First edition first issue of one of Dickens' most enduring works with p. 213 misnumbered "113" the signature mark "b" at the foot of the plate list and the misspelling "affetcionately" on line 12 p. 134. Octavo bound in three quarters leather over marbled boards gilt titles and tooling to the spine raised bands marbled endpapers. Sixteen plates after H.K. Browne including frontispiece and title vignette. In near fine condition. Ownership signature. The most famous and possibly the most popular of Dickens's novels A Tale of Two Cities shows a master of dramatic narrative extracting gold from the ore of history. If the bloody tableau of the French Revolution were not in itself sufficient for a dozen novels Dickens added to it a professional resurrectionist an authentic ogress and an antihero as convincingly flawed as any in modern literature. "Dickens had always admired Carlyle's History of the French Revolution and asked him to recommend suitable books from which he could research the period; in reply Carlyle sent him a 'cartload' of volumes. So great was Dickens' enthusiasm for the story that it had indeed 'taken in possession' of him. The force of the novel springs from its exploration of darkness and death but its beauty derives from Dickens' real sense of transcendence from his ability to see the sweep of destiny" Ackroyd 858. The last of Dickens' books to be illustrated by H.K. Browne "Phiz" with 16 engraved plates by him. "Browne for 23 years responsible for all the etchings which had so successfully embellished these Dickens' books produced his last drawings for the present work. Bradbury and Evans the printers of all and publishers of five of Dickens' works as issued in monthly parts had ceased to act in this dual capacity after completion of Little Dorrit. resulting in the return of Chapman and Hall as publishers of this and all succeeding works" Hatton & Cleaver 333. DICKENS Charles.
The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby.
London: Chapman and Hall 1839. The copy of his friend William Henry Wills Octavo 213 x 134 mm. Original purple half morocco spine lettered in gilt marbled sides and endpapers. Engraved portrait frontispiece 39 engraved plates by Phiz. Light rubbing skilfully retouched small chip at head of spine some browning to plates and title page. A very good copy. First edition in the publisher's deluxe binding of half morocco. Following the serialization in parts Dombey and Son was issued in book-form in cloth full morocco and the present half morocco. The deluxe bindings of Dickens have been somewhat marginalized by bibliographers but it is certainly the case that they are significantly scarcer than the cloth issues. Dickens had been catapulted to fame with the success of The Pickwick Papers and to secure his next novel Chapman and Hall offered Dickens £150 a part a sum ten times greater than that which he had received for Pickwick. It met with great public enthusiasm which has continued unabated: Dickens's biographer Ackroyd stated that the novel "has some title to being the funniest novel Dickens ever wrote; it is perhaps the funniest novel in the English language" Peter Ackroyd Dickens pp. 262. This copy has a particularly nice association with the bookplate to the front pastedown of Charles Dickens's friend the British playwright journalist and newspaper editor William Henry Wills 1810-1880. Wills began his friendship with Dickens in 1846 when he worked as sub-editor of The Daily News under Dickens's editorship and afterwards invested in and worked for Dickens's Household Words and All the Year Round. "In addition to this increasingly close business relationship Wills and Dickens became good friends with Wills serving as a highly trusted confidant. Dickens went so far as to entrust Wills with the transmission of his letters to his mistress Ellen Ternan during Dickens's 1867–8 American reading tour. As Dickens had put it on 2 January 1862: 'I think we can say that we doubt whether any two men can have gone on more happily and smoothly or with greater trust or confidence in one another' Letters 10.2. It is significant that his friendship with Wills was 'one of the few unbroken relationships Dickens experienced in his lifetime' Spencer 145" ODNB. Also with the bookplate to the front free endpaper of Sir William Overend Priestley 1829-1900 British physician and Conservative Member of Parliament for Edinburgh and St Andrews Universities from 1896 to 1900. Eckel pp. 64-5; Smith 5. Also see Lars Kremers "A Comparative Bibliography of the Sheets and Publishers' Cloth Cases of the Demy Octavo Works of Charles Dickens 1837-1872" PhD thesis Curtin University November 2013. The oft-cited textual points apply only to the parts with the corrections made by the time of the book-form edition. London: Chapman and Hall, hardcover

Dickens Charles
Engraved ticket to Charles Dickens's farewell dinner
London 1867. Admission ticket #70 for the public banquet given in honor of Charles Dickens as he embarked on his final American reading tour. In 1867 Dickens was at the height of his literary fame and the grand farewell dinner at London's Freemason's Hall was attended by almost five hundred guests including Matthew Arnold Wilkie Collins Alfred Tennyson and Anthony Trollope. In his response to the toasts Dickens outlined his reasons for returning to America: " I am inspired . . . by a natural desire to see for myself the astonishing change and progress of a quarter of a century over there to grasp the hands of many faithful friends whom I left upon those shores to see the faces of a multitude of new friends upon whom I have never looked and last not least to use my best endeavor to lay down a third cable of intercommunication and alliance between the old world and the new." Dickens was overwhelmed by the occasion writing to his friend Harry Wills the following day: "When I got up to speak but for taking a desperate hold of myself I should have lost my sight and voice and sat down again." A near-fine artifact of the Victorian literary scene. Pale green coated card measuring 3 x 4.5 inches printed recto only: "Dinner given to Mr. Charles Dickens / on the occasion of / His Departure for the United States / Freemason's Hall Great Queen St. / Saturday November 2nd 1867 Seven o'clock."
