London: Richard Bentley 1837. 1837 / 1838 four volumes in matching full black leather gilt-decorated on spines elaborately decorated in blind on boards volumes 1 2 and 4 in generally very good to fine condition vol. 3 chipped at spine head and with split on rear hinge at lower end. Dickens edited the magazine until 1839 which saw the first appearance of Oliver Twist in serial form it concludes in vol. 5 which I do not have. Illustrations throughout by Cruikshank are clean and untainted by brown-spotting. While there are no bookplates to indicate early ownership there is on the spine of each volume an heraldic device in gilt with the motto 'Duw dy Ras' enclosing a unicorn the motto of the Kemeys family of Glamorganshire later the Kemeys Tynte family of Somerset. .
