Includes newspaper clippings programs for high school theatrical performances correspondence regarding the productions and articles such as "Wingate youths present Indian lore in drama" published in "Indian Community Action" and "Navajo Legends Increase English Proficiency" published in "Indian Record December 1969." Most is loosely laid in. An early scrap book belonging to bookman and publisher Ernie Bulow documenting his theatrical experiences as cultural arts instructor / script writer at Wingate High School in Fort Wingate New Mexico. <br /> <br /> After receiving an English degree in the sixties Bulow worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs resided in Gallup N.M. and taught English at Fort Wingate on the Navajo Reservation. Subsequently he received a doctorate from the University of Utah and he returned to Gallup where he traded in Indian jewelry and kachinas and opened his bookstore. unknown

Julia Emilie Neilson actress and theatre manager with her husband Fred Terry. Two affectionate Typed Letters Signed to ‘Popie’ the theatre historian W. J. Macqueen-Pope discussing her poor health contentment in old age and birthday.
7 July 1952 and 19 June 1953. Both from 4 Primrose Hill Road NW3 London. See her entry and that of Macqueen-Pope in the Oxford DNB. The two items are in fair condition on aged and lightly-worn paper. Both with the valediction and signature in a large flowing hand and the second letter also with an autograph postscript. Both are 1p 4to and folded three times. ONE 7 July 1952: Addressed to ‘Popie my dear’ and with autograph valediction ‘Yours always / Julia’. She has ‘not been too well for over a year’ and the previous year her ‘stupid heart did foolish things’ and she was ‘ordered to bed for six weeks or more’. She is still ‘not allowed to do too much’. She concludes: ‘I suppose it is something to have lived to eighty-four and it is not so easy to throw off things as when one was young. Still I have had a very good innings haven’t I and should be contented. I am.’ TWO 19 June 1953: Addressed to ‘Dear thoughtful Popie’ with autograph valediction ‘My love / Julia’ with autograph postscript ‘Everything seems “touched†in this letter!!!’ As the following indicates she uses the word ‘touched’ twice. She was ‘very touched by your very sweet and I must say flattering telegram to old Julia’. He was ‘a dear to take the trouble to remember the eightyfive-year-old girl and she is always touched by the charming little compliments you pay her’. ‘New Theatre Royal Adelphi / Jany 19th 1860’. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 12mo. In good condition lightly aged. On a bifolium the blank second leaf of which is laid down on part of a leaf from an album. Folded twice for postage. The recipient is ‘Henry Spicer Esq’ presumably a relation of the artist of the same name d.1804; see ODNB several of whose theatrical portraits are in the Garrick Club collection. Webster has been given ‘infinite pleasure’ by his ‘generous offer’: ‘Be assured the Dramatic College is a most prosperous institution & well deserving your patronage.’ He asks him to ‘call at our offices 15 Bedford Street Covent Garden’ where he will ‘see a full confirmation of what I state’. Fine. - An original invitation from the Palais de Monaco printed on 9-3/8 inch high by 6-1/8 inch wide glossy card stock with an integral attached blank leaf with the country's seal at the head. Mostly printed with "Monsieur et Madame Hugues Gall" and "ils seront" invites penned in ink. The invitation to the gala held at the Opera de Monte-Carlo on the occasion of the Fete Nationale is to be held on Friday November 19th 1976 "Par ordre de Leurs Altesses Serenissimes l'Aide de Camp a l'honneur d'informer Monsieur et Madame Hugues Gall qu'ils seront invites a la soiree de gala. en l'honneuyr de Leurs Altesses Serenissimes le Prince Rainier III et la Princesse de Monaco." The invitation is accompanied by the program for the Opera de Monte-Carlo November 20 1976 gala choregraphique. ONE: Circular headed ‘SHAKESPEARE MEMORIAL THEATRE / STRATFORD-UPON-AVON / ENDOWMENT FUND.’ Dated 1 November 1923 and with autograph signature possibly by proxy of ‘H C Lacey’ ‘Organising Secretary H. C. LACEY M.B.E.’. Shakespeare’s coat of arms printed in red ink at top right. Louis de Vries Dutch jazz trumpeter. Autograph Signature ‘With best regards/ Louis de Vries’.
Without date or place. Louis de Vries’s signature cannot be that common since he died tragically young as a result of a car accident. He was of Jewish extraction and his sister Clara 1915-1942 a trumpeter praised by Louis Armstrong and the leader of an all-woman band The Rosian Ladies died at Auschwitz. Lengthwise on a leaf of 11 x 17.5 cm cream paper with rounded corners extracted from an autograph album. In good condition lightly aged. No other writing on either side of the leaf. Irving Wardle theatre critic. Autograph Letter Signed to Gerald Wynne-Rushton giving advice on offering a play with reference to a letter he has received from Emyr Humphreys producer of BBC TV production of Saunders Lewis’s ‘Siwan’.
16 March no year but between 1960 and 1963; on letterhead of the Observer London. Wardle worked as Kenneth Tynan’s deputy on the Observer between 1959 and 1963. Wynne-Rushton had published a play titled ‘The Gull’s Way’ in 1930 and a book on the papacy for Catholic publishers Burns Oates and Washburne two years later. 2pp 4to. In fair condition folded three times with wear and loss along one fold line of the second leaf resulting in loss of a few words of text. Signed ‘Irving Wardle’ and addressed to ‘Dear Mr. Rushton’ identified as G. W. Wynne-Rushton by associated correspondence. He does not feel that he can be of much help to Wynne-Rushton ‘in suggesting possible markets’ for his work. Regarding the 1960 BBC TV production of Saunders Lewis’s ‘Siwan’ he writes: ‘It so happened that by the same post that brought your letter I received a note from Emyr Humphreys the producer of SIWAN in which he said how much difficulty he had encountered in getting the BBC to agree to a television production of a play so remote from the current idioms: had it not been an appropriate choice for St. David’s Day the work might not have been seen at all.’ He suggests Wynne-Rushton try J. Roose-Evans manager of the Hampstead Theatre Club which staged the play of ‘Siwan’ and ‘might be interested in other historical pieces . And of course you can’t lose anything by sending scripts in to the script department of the BBC and independent networks in the normal way. A Dickens Fellowship dinner in wartime London. Autograph Signatures of James Agate Walter Dexter Humphrey House and Lewis B. Frewer to menu for dinner celebrating the ‘130th Anniversary of the Birthday of Charles Dickens’.
‘Holborn Restaurant London 7th February 1942’. It seems extraordinary that they were able to pull this off during wartime restrictions and Dickens would have relished the shabby-genteelness of it. The menu is shakily printed in a faded blue on a 10 x 16.5 cm piece of cream card with rounded edges. At foot: ‘Holborn Restaurant 7th February 1942’. The menu is headed: ‘THE DICKENS FELLOWSHIP / 130th Anniversary of the / Birthday of Charles Dickens / Chairman: WALTER DEXTER Vice-President / Speakers: HUMPHREY HOUSE JAMES AGATE’. Theatre playbill for the first night of 'Spirit of the Waters! Or Undine and the Goblin Page' starting on the 9th March 1829 with "entirely new music scenery dresses decorations most extensive and entirely nouvelle machinery and unique effects" a "fountain of real water" and "combined splendour of fire and water united in unequalled brilliancy!". The actors included Mr. Leach "the extraordinary dwarf who has been engaged expressly to aid this piece and who will introduce a variety of astonishing feats peculiar to himself and excelling every display of extraordinary agility hitherto witnessed!". I do hope you can come." Signed by the American theatre film television and radio actress Beatrice Straight. Together with the original 9 inch high by 5-1/4 inch wide four-page program printed on heavy stock and illustrated in color on the front. The original ticket order form and envelope is laid in. She made her Broadway debut in "The Posessed" and played Viola in "Twelfth Night" Lady Macduff in "Macbeth" and Elizabeth Proctor in "The Crucible" for which she won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play. She won the Academy Award for best supporting actress for her role in "Network" which at 5 minutes and 2 seconds of screen time is noteworthy as the shortest ever to win. Other movie roles included that of Mother Christophe in "The Nuns Story" and Dr. Martha Lesh in "Poltergeist".</p><p>The recipient Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jos Iturbi Andre Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.</p> New York, 1985.

The souvenir program gives a substantial description of the design and construction of the Cort Theatre with the facade modeled after the Petit Trianon in Versailles. In the pantomime an entreaty to literacy and knowledge Intelligence sends Proverb to help Jack Horner with his studies Jack fends off Ignorance with the Sword of Perseverance and sent to a 'Fairy Aquarium' with a coral palace to see what can be achieved by Imagination. The spectacular visual scenery provided by William Beverley in particular the 'Fairy Aquarium' was universally praised; indeed even the The Times who dismissed Blanchard's efforts stating that 'People do not expect to be edified and instructed at a pantomime' were effusive in their praise: 'As its wonders gradually revealed themselves and the circumambient air no less than terra firma became peopled with floating nymphs and soaring fairies the applause was vociferous and continuous and a summons first for Mr E. Melton Mowbray: No Publisher Three tickets for various productions at Dalby Theatre: 1. 'Macbeth' with 'High Life Below Stairs' approximately 55mm x 76mm in size dated 21st July with an image of a woman holding a dagger and a chalice; 2. 'The Wonder' with 'Atheling Castle' approximately 54mm x 77mm in size dated July 14th with an image of a dancing woman holding a mask; and 3. 'The Castle Spectre' with a farce called 'Transformed or No' approximately 65mm x 57mm in size dated July 9th with a coloured image of a partially clothed woman in the clouds holding a banner in which the plays and dates are inscribed n.d. but probably very late eighteenth century or very early nineteenth century. All three slightly trimmed each with play titles and date to front in ink and with 'Admission Ticket Not Transferable' to reverse lightly browned 'Castle Spectre' with soiling to top left hand corner but generally clean. Dalby theatre was the private playhouse of Edward Hartropp 1758-1808 at Little Dalby Hall Leicestershire it was demolished in 1945. 'High Life Below Stairs' was a comedy by James Townley; 'The Wonder' was a play by Susanna Centlivre set in Lisbon; 'Atheling Castle' was possibly based on the gothic novel by Ann Radcliffe 'The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne' first published in 1789; 'The Castle Spectre' was by Matthew Gregory Lewis Monk Lewis first performed in 1797; and 'Transformed or No' has eluded our searches. The BM has all three of these tickets with others pasted on to a sheet of paper C2. 1535-1543 Yale has both 'Macbeth' with the same image used for another play 'Isabella' with 'Lover's Quarrels' and 'Castle Spectre' but not as far as we can tell 'The Wonder'. First edition of this surprisingly scarce and splendidly illustrated caricature rendering of the stars and performers at the Hollywood Bowl for the 1927 Season. Caricatured among the “Hollywood Bowlsheviks†are Alfred Hertz who inaugurated the first Hollywood Bowl season of music in 1922 Bruno Walter Vladimir Shavitch Cecil B. De Mille Louis B. Mayer Pola Negri Hestelle Heartt Dreyfuss Lloyd Wright Pierre Monteux Douglas Fairbank and Mary Pickford. De Bru 1900-1990 was a child prodigy taken to Cuba where he trained as a classical violinist played with the Orchestra of the Teatro Nacional in Havana and after New York was hired as musician and caricaturist in Hollywood at the Bowl. He also put together a tango band in 1927 which performed at the Cocoanut Grove at the Ambassador and later took up a long term residency at the Waldorf Astoria in New York for 15 years and one of the noted performers was Desi Arnaz. His famed caricature “Curtain of Stars†measuring 40 x 60 feet hunt at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.
