New York: circa 1923. 1923. Very good. - Small quarto 10-1/2 inches high by 8 inches wide softcover. A sheet of cream-colored paper printed in brown is folded once to form a 4-page brochure. A full-page photographic portrait of Vivien Kellems is followed by 2 pages of text on Kellems and her lectures with a page of testimonials on the 4th side. There is some very light soiling with a light paperclip mark to the top margin of the 1st page. There is a tiny chip to the bottom of the fold. Very good. <p>The brochure states that Miss Kellems hopes through her lectures to carry the message of a better theatre throughout America. Among the titles are "About the Great Revolution for a Cleaner and More Intelligent Drama and How It Progresses" and "About the Need of Better Audiences and the Way That Need Is Being Met". Laid in are a report on an address by Kellems at a Rotary Club of New York luncheon and a humorous song from the Indianapolis Rotary Club in which the members vow to clean up their theatre-going.<p>Vivien Kellems 1896-1975 earned an M.A. in economics ar the University of Oregon in 1920 but abandoned her Ph.D. studies at Columbia University to become a theatrical publicist. She later went on the lecture circuit supplementing her fees with bonuses from producers whose plays she mentioned. Her business career which began in 1928 was built on a cable grip invented by her brother Edgar. By the end of the first year her firm had a gross income of $40000 and had paid $4000 in royalties to her brother. Thereafter it was her feud with the tax authorities that brought her nationwide fame. She believed that the Federal tax system discriminated against single people. Good. - An original 9-1/2 inch high by 7-3/8 inch wide sepia-toned matte-finish photograph of the American stage actress and producer Katharine Cornell. The image portrays the lovely Katharine Cornell seated on the floor in three-quarter profile. Attired in a shoulderless patterned dress the actress looks up to the side. Inscribed "Best Wishes" and signed "Katharine Cornell" at center right. Apparently once framed the photograph is mounted on cardboard and the very edges are slightly rubbed. Remnants of paper backing adhere to verso of the heavily rubbed cardboard mount. The photograph itself is near fine. <p>Born in Berlin to American parents the American stage actress Katharine Cornell 1893-1974 was dubbed "The First Lady of the Theater" by the critic Alexander Woolcott. Beyond the stage she was also a writer theater owner and producer. Raised in Buffalo New York she married the stage and film director Guthrie McClintic who often directed those serious Broadway dramas in which she starred. She is perhaps best known for her portrayal of the poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning in the 1931 production of "The Barretts of Wimpole Street" and was the first performer to receive the Drama League Award for her 1935 portrayal of Juliet in "Romeo and Juliet" and a Tony Award for her portrayal of Cleopatra in the 1947 production of "Antony and Cleopatra". unknown

Good. <p>The date "September 25th 1920" is written on the first page probably by a theatre-goer.<p> Among the items advertised are player pianos ladies' face powder the David Selznick movie "The Sir That Was Him" Stetson hats and Elkhorn cheeses. A column of comic anecdotes includes one from American Legion Weekly in dialect about "Two darkies in a negro regiment boasting about their company buglers." 1956. 1956. Good. - 14 words penned in blue ink on a 2-1/4 inch high by 3-1/4 inch wide card. Signed "Helen Hayes". The bottom corners of the card are very slightly soiled & there is a hole punched in it at bottom right with 2 tiny chips to its circumference. Good. <p>Helen Hayes 1900-1993 was known as the "First Lady" of American theatre. She writes: "Jean Darling -- / We will do our best for you tonight -- Because we love you." In November 1956 Jean Dalrymple produced a revival of "The Glass Menagerie" at City Center starring Hayes who as a favor to her friend performed for Equity minimum. The note was probably attached to a gift or flowers.<p>Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Cary Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jose Iturbi Andre Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member producer and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world. Near fine. <p>A note acknowledging receipt of the scripts "It's on the House" and "Judy Takes a Punch".<p>One of the more dramatic incidents of Spooner's career occurred in 1913 as reported in the New York Times of December 13 under the headline "Arrest of Actress Stops a Vice Play / Cecil Spooner Rides to Night Court in Patrol Wagon--Manager a Prisoner Too" when she was arrested along with the manager of her theatre as she was about to go onstage. The play a dramatization of Reginald Wright Kaufmann's "The House of Bondage" was about white slavery and had drawn complaints of indecency. The audience protested vociferously many of them following her to the police station. She was paroled into the custody of her counsel.<p>A scarce autograph. Jan 19th 1943. unknown

For the Benefit of Mr. kemble. By Their majesties Servants At the theatre in leeds On tuesday Evening June 5 1781 will be reviv'd a tragedy call'd The earl of essex: or the unhappy favourite.
Leeds: s.n. 1781. Single leaf broadside. Browned and creased some marginal chipping/tearing. An apparently unrecorded playbill advertising a benefit night of John Philip Kemble 1757-1823 at the provincial Theatre in Leeds in 1781. This appearance pre-dates Kemble's London debut by two years. At this time he was touring as a member of Tate Wilkinson's Company on the Yorkshire circuit; indeed it was Wilkinson who had constructed the Leeds theatre in 1771. Kemble son of actor-manager of a strolling theatrical troupe Roger Kemble and younger brother of actress Sarah Siddons took to acting in 1776 joining Wilkinson in 1778. Later in 1781 he moved to the Smock Alley theatre in Dublin before joining his sister at Drury Lane in September 1783. At Leeds he played the titular role in the tragedy of The Earl of Essex after which 'Shakespeare's Ode' was performed in which the majority of the players took vocal parts but with Kemble himself taking the speaking role. The evening concluded with the 'New Pantomime Entertainment' of Necromancer: of Harlequin Doctor Faustus an imaginative retelling of Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus by pantomimist and theatre manager John Rich 1692-1761 first performed in 1723. .
