Beautiful original crimson gold bindings; dark morocco leather backs over lighter leather-like cloth boards. The spines tooled in compartments with gold 'player's mask' faces. Moliere was one of the greatest French playwrights. He was the creator of French high comedy. His genius lay in exposing the hypocrisies and follies of his society through satire. Paris: Chez Paulin 1833. Hardcover. black-&-white illustrations. Pagination: volume I pp. 768 Table des Pieces; volume II pp. 895 Table des Pieces. The text of course is in French. Small 4to. Two volume set handsomely bound in embellished green leather. Bound in full grained green calf the boards embellished in blind the spine in compartments stamped in blind with a matching pattern. All edges gilt. Signature of Henry Baker and year 1838 on inside front board above a 20th century bookplate of previous owner opposite which is his signature and date April 1933. Same to volume II except no signature of Baker. Preliminary pages of volume I show some foxing; less so to volume II. Occasional light foxing to margins of later pages. Extremities of boards rubbed. Joints of both volumes beginning to split near base of spine. Some darkening soiling to leather near base of spine of both volumes. Spines appear a trifle sunned.
